Jaden Payoute, Virginia Tech, Player News

Payoute just needs to make it through fall camp unscathed. The receiver was on track to be a key contributor last year before he suffered a season-ending leg injury at the end of fall camp. He practiced once in the spring before the training staff decided Payoute should have a follow-up procedure in hopes he could put the injury completely behind him.

Quarterback Braxton Burmeister said Payoute is back to his old self in the player-led workouts this summer. Burmeister also made it clear that Payoute is about as gifted of an athlete as there is, a common opinion amongst the team. They still marvel at the video posted to social media of him leaping from a standing position into the bed of a pickup truck. Tech desperately needs more production out of receivers not named Tre Turner and Tayvion Robinson, and Payoute is the one to watch. - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech receiver Jaden Payoute's spring camp was short-lived. Tech coach Justin Fuente announced Payoute would miss the rest of the spring after he underwent an additional surgical procedure on the season-ending leg injury he suffered in fall camp. The training staff recommended the receiver go through with the surgery after he participated in Tech's first spring practice on March 16. The Hokies are scheduled to practice three times a week for five weeks this spring. "I have an update on Jaden Payoute, he practiced in the first practice and we really felt it was best that he get the remaining plate from his foot or leg," Fuente said. "He will be out the rest of the spring recovering and be ready to go, full go, come fall camp." The 6-foot-1, 210 pounder was a four-star signee in Tech's 2019 signing class. He redshirted that year after playing in four games. Fuente had high expectations for Payoute going into last fall before he suffered the leg injury. - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech wide receiver Jaden Payoute broke some injury news for his followers on Instagram. Payoute posted photos and videos of himself at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center on Tuesday. He had a boot around his ankle early in the day and was laid up in the hospital bed later in the afternoon. Tech coach Justin Fuente confirmed the injury news in a virtual press conference on Wednesday. Fuente expects the redshirt freshman to miss an extended period of time after suffering a leg injury in practice. "It was a hard thing for everybody just because he's worked so hard to continue to improve," Fuente said. "I think he's a great example of a guy that didn't have success as soon as he stepped on campus but didn't let that deter him." Payoute was expected to play a key role at receiver this season. The Hokies had significant attrition at the position in the offseason and were looking to Payoute, along with recent grad transfers Evan Fairs and Changa Hodge, to provide them some depth behind Tre Turner and Tayvion Robinson. - Roanoke Times
