Dawand Jones, Ohio State, Player News

  01/12/23 - OT Dawand JonesSr/2023, Ohio State, 6-8, 374 (DS#5 OT) + More +

Dawand Jones came to Ohio State football as a project, an offensive lineman with the heart and mobility of a basketball player and the body of a small mountain. He leaves the Buckeyes as a down-ballot All-American and likely an early round NFL Draft pick. As expected, Jones announced Wednesday that he will conclude his college career by entering April's draft. Jones was ranked No. 1,043 in the 247Sports national composite for the 2019 class. Pushing 380 pounds at the time, the 6-foot-8 talent from Indianapolis had outgrown his basketball dreams while developing into a college prospect late in his high school career. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Dawand Jones was holding a plank during a weightlifting workout earlier this summer when the Ohio State strength and conditioning staff put a 35-pound plate on his back. The placement added a layer of difficulty to the abs exercise, but it also served as a reminder for the Buckeyes' big right tackle. Carrying extra weight on his body is tough. While Jones held the plank for 40 seconds as instructed by strength guru Mickey Marotti, it left him exhausted.

The instance is a snapshot of one of Jones' biggest offseason emphasis. Since last season, the 6-foot-8 tackle has slimmed down, losing about 10 pounds. After his weight surpassed 370 pounds last fall, Jones said he has dropped down to 364 pounds. "When you're heavier, it takes a toll on you," Jones said. "It's like everything is slower. Your body moves slower. You move slow." A lot of his strides have come over the past three months. Following a break in May at the end of the spring semester, Jones felt a renewed focus for the summer's strength and conditioning program. "I just told myself I've got to attack the workouts with a different mindset," he said. "It's paying off." The weight loss wasn't owed to a dramatic change in diet. Jones said he largely reduced the portion sizes of meals. "I definitely cut down on some stuff," he said. - Columbus Dispatch

C.J. Stroud seems like he wants to set up a basketball game between Ohio State football and the Buckeyes' men's basketball team. "I honestly think that if we played like football vs. our basketball team, it would be close," the Ohio State quarterback said at Big Ten media days Wednesday. "I think we would win." Starting by talking about the toughness of his offensive line heading into the 2022 season, talking about the development of players like Paris Johnson Jr. and Donovan Jackson, Stroud turned his focus to Dawand Jones: the Buckeyes' projected starter at right tackle heading into the 2022 season opener.

Dawand Jones looked every bit the Marion County Player of the Year in leading the Giants past No. 2 LC in Saturday's regional semifinal at Southport. "Jones, a 6-foot-8, 350-pound offensive lineman out of Indianapolis, is a player the Ohio State quarterback continues to be floored by. "I love Dawand, man. He's the biggest kid you'll know, but he's a great dude. One of the best athletes I have ever met in my life," Stroud said. "He could play basketball, but his ability, his footwork and his ability to use his size not against him, but for him, it's been amazing just to see the laws of gravity, you know what I mean?" Stroud called Jones the "most polished basketball player" on the Ohio State football team, averaging 17 points and nine rebounds per game at Ben Davis High School and earning several Division 1 offers. - Columbus Dispatch
