Trelon Smith, Texas-San Antonio, Player News

Former Arkansas running back Trelon Smith is heading to Conference USA via the transfer portal. Smith took to Twitter to announce he's transferring to UTSA. He'll have one year of eligibility remaining as a graduate transfer, starting his career at Arizona State. "Unfinished business," Smith tweeted. "Let's get it." Last year was Smith's second at Arkansas, and he totaled 598 rushing yards and five touchdowns with the Razorbacks. That came one season after he had 710 yards and five touchdowns. Smith transferred to Arkansas after two years with Arizona State in 2017 and 2018 when he had a combined 12 rushing attempts for 60 yards over those two seasons. - Trelon Smith twitter

All the praise University of Arkansas running back Trelon Smith received from coaches and teammates last season when he redshirted and in preseason practice this year wasn't just talk. Smith is the real deal as he showed Saturday when the Razorbacks pushed No. 13 Auburn to the limit before the Tigers won 30-28 on a last-second field goal by Anders Carlson. "Me personally, I feel like I stepped up to the plate," said Smith, who filled in for injured starter Rakeem Boyd, who didn't travel to Auburn. "I felt like I did what I was supposed to do in the run game, pass-blocking game and also the passing game."

Smith, a sophomore who redshirted last season after transferring from Arizona State, got his first start with the Razorbacks and led them with 21 carries for 81 yards and had 6 receptions for 78 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown catch from Feleipe Franks. "I feel like I did a good job across the whole board and moving forward toward the next game," Smith said. "I just plan on just staying neutral, steady working and just getting the job done when my number is called." Razorbacks Coach Sam Pittman said he wasn't surprised by Smith's performance. "He practices that way," Pittman said on his postgame radio show. "We knew he'd have a good game. Just practices his tail off." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman expects his players to be tough, hard-nosed and blue-collar. Following the Razorbacks' first full-scale scrimmage of the preseason on Friday, the first-year head coach said 5-9, 185-pound running back Trelon Smith fits that description perfectly. "He's tough on the field, he's tough off the field," Pittman added. "That's his personality." At the running back position, all eyes will be on senior tailback Rakeem Boyd, who in late December announced he would bypass the 2020 NFL Draft and return to Arkansas for one final season. Boyd established himself as one of the top backs in the SEC last fall, rushing for more than 1,100 yards and eight scores.

But Smith, a transfer from Arizona State, is eagerly awaiting his opportunity to make an impact beyond the practice field and be a productive complement to Boyd. The Houston native drew high praise from Arkansas' previous coaching staff for his play as a scout team back in 2019. Similar reviews have come in with the new coaching staff and teammates. "The guy is a phenomenal effort guy," Pittman said. "He has a lot of talent. (I like) the way that he works, the way he goes about his business. He's a tough kid. "I've really grown fond of the way he works." - Northwest Arkansas Times
