Arkansas defensive lineman Taurean Carter announced Wednesday he has been cleared to practice for the Razorbacks this spring. Practices are scheduled to begin March 9. The Mansfield, Texas, native was among the Razorbacks' spring standouts in 2022. But h e injured his knee during the team's spring showcase last April 16 and missed the 2022 season. "Today is one of the best days of my life," Carter wrote in a post to his Twitter account. "Thankful for the man above and my friends and family. President Car ter has returned. Let's work."The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported last May that Carter had undergone an undisclosed knee surgery. In 2021, he played in 13 games and recorded 24 tackles, 3 tackles for lost yardage and 1 sack, which came during t he Razorbacks' 16-13 win at LSU. The Razorbacks will have a couple of key names either limited or largely unavailable when preseason practices begin. Defensive lineman Taurean Carter, one of the top all-around performers until the final stages of spring drills, will likely miss camp as he recovers from a knee injury suffered in the Razorbacks' spring showcase on April 16. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported he had surgery on the knee early in the summer.Prior to his injury, Carter was expected to be one of the mainstays and l eaders of Arkansas' interior defensive line. He had 24 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 sack last season, but emerged as a potential top playmaker throughout the spring. "TC will be in camp...but that doesn't mean that he's going to be active in camp," Pittman said. "But we felt like it was important that he come into camp, be a part of the team, be a part of the meetings, be a part of practice. "Not that he's going to be able to practice, yet. University of Arkansas defensive tackle Taurean Carter suffered a knee injury that required surgery during the team's spring showcase on April 16, but Coach Sam Pittman isn't counting him out on playing this season, "Taurean's so strong, and guys that ha ve muscles around injuries tend to heal a little faster," Pittman said. "He's so strong, and he has a strong will to not be the norm. I think he's progressing really well. I want him to [be back] more for him than I do for the team even. "But he's been v ery engaged, and he's progressing rapidly. We'll just kind of have to wait and see to be perfectly honest with you."Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon, a teammate of Carter's at Mansfield (Texas) Legacy High, said Carter's handling his injury situation well. "I think when it first hit him he was definitely down," Catalon said. "I went through the process. The first couple of weeks it's tough and it's continuing to be tough. I know him. I've known him my whole life and he's a strong-minded guy. When he puts his mind to something he's going to do it. "He's attacked the process really well. He's asked me questions about it. University of Arkansas defensive tackle Taurean Carter underwent knee surgery on Friday, sources with knowledge of the situation said Friday. The magnitude of the injury and how long it will keep Carter sidelined have not been disclosed by Coach Sam Pitt man. Carter went to the turf in pain during a "thud" contact segment of the team's spring showcase event inside the Walker Pavilion on April 16. He was aided off the field by team by medical personnel and has been under observation since then. Pittman sa id at the time, "I don't think it's an ACL or anything of that nature, but there is something there that we have to tend to." Taurean Carter was not accustomed to being a designated scout team player. Then a 6-3, 288-pound defensive tackle from Mansfield (Texas) Legacy, Carter was rated the 30th-best prospect at his position out of high school, and he was a four-year letterman. A menace to opposing offensive linemen, he racked up more than 90 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks in his final two years at the school. He was the man for the Broncos. Ultimately, he signed with Chad Morris and Arkansas over offers from the l ikes of Florida, Michigan State, TCU and Texas, among other programs. Carter began playing football at age 4. His freshman season at Arkansas was the first time he had not touched the field in any game. Carter contemplated transferring, and he began ques tioning whether or not football was truly in the cards for him.At certain points in time, he wanted to quit altogether. Carter regularly talked about his situation with his father, who encouraged him to do some self-reflecting. "He'd give me the r eal, like, you've got to get better," Carter said. "He said, 'You've worked too hard your whole life, so don't give up now. You'll never want to be a quitter.' He didn't raise me to be a quitter. That made me have to look at myself in the mirror and ask myself what's wrong. "What am I doing wrong? How can I improve? I took that year doing scout team, putting in work after practice … I didn't travel to games, so I would go into the facility on weekends then get back to it throughout the week. All those days added up and it helped me improve. I saw improvement and I saw me getting better at stuff I did before." - Northwest Arkansas Times

After feeling his way through the 2020 season and earning a start against LSU toward the end of Arkansas' SEC-only schedule, Carter was overcome with a sense of belonging. The 6-3, 300-pound tackle believes he can compete and more than hold his own again st high-caliber offensive linemen and is a fit in the conference. The former Mansfield (Texas) Legacy standout's numbers last season don't jump off the page. He finished with 11 tackles, which was sixth most among the Razorbacks' defensive linemen. But i ncluded in his statistics were confidence-building moments and games, particularly against Georgia (2 tackles), Tennessee (3) and LSU (3). It was a significant stepping stone for Carter, who spent the 2019 season on the Razorbacks' scout team and did not travel to road games. Sam Pittman pointed to the lineman as a player who stood out in spring drills and made individual strides.Arkansas center Ricky Stromberg, who faced off with Carter often during team work, commended him for the manner in whi ch he used his hands as a weapon. Carter's work with his hands gives way to getting extension on his matchup and shedding blocks to make plays. "I love to try to work with my hands," Carter said this spring. "You can't do nothing without your hands, so I try to slow my processes down and think about bringing my hands to the fight. Every time I come off the ball I think of it as a fight. Taurean Carter is moving on up this spring for the Arkansas Razorbacks. An ankle injury to returning starter Isaiah Nichols at defensive tackle has slowed the Springdale junior much of the spring, and Carter has gotten plenty of work on the first unit fo r the University of Arkansas defense. Coach Sam Pittman, asked on Wednesday who has surprised him this spring, brought up Carter first. "Taurean Carter's had a really good spring," Pittman said, "along with Zach Williams, who is at 265 now. "The D-line h as surprised me. They're playing better ball than possibly what I might have thought."The 6-3, 298-pound redshirt sophomore saw action behind Jonathan Marshall and Nichols in eight games last season and notched 11 tackles and a pass breakup. When covid-19 decimated the Hogs' front for the LSU game late in the season, Carter got a start and held up well against the Tigers. "Looking at the amount of plays that I had and the stats I was able to come up with at the end of the year, I feel like I'm fi t for this conference and I'm able to compete," Carter said.
