The Oregon Ducks' most disruptive defender is returning for the 2023 season. Brandon Dorlus, who has been planning on all year to remain in the NFL Draft, announced he will instead be returning to the Ducks for his final year of eligibility. Dorlus finis hed with 39 tackles, including a team-high 9.5 for loss, last season. Both were career highs. He added 2.5 sacks and two pass breakups. Dorlus, who will be a fifth-year senior, is the fifth draft-eligible player to announce his intent to return for a fin al season of eligibility at UO, joining Bo Nix, Steven Jones, Mase Funa and Popo Aumavae, who was granted an additional year of eligibility due to injury. - The Oregonian

Oregon will open the 2022 season in the top 15 of the Associated Press poll for a four straight year. The Ducks are No. 11 with a total of 831 points in the AP preseason top 25 poll released Monday. It is the 14th time in the last 15 seasons Oregon will open the year ranked and third time in four years UO is No. 11 in the preseason poll. The Ducks, who are No. 12 in the preseason AFCA coaches poll, went 10-4 and won the Pac-12 North division before losing in the conference championship game and Alamo Bo wl last season and finished No. 22 in the final AP poll. The second highest-ranked Pac-12 team, Oregon is behind No. 7 Utah from the conference with only No. 14 USC also ranked within the league and UCLA received votes. - The Oregonian

No Oregon Ducks position group has been more significantly and enormously enhanced this offseason than the interior defensive line. Starters Brandon Dorlus, Popo Aumavae and Keyon Ware-Hudson all missed spring following winter surgeries and have returned to the field. Jordon Riley and Casey Rogers each arrived from Nebraska, where they played for Ducks defensive line coach Tony Tuioti. Then Sir Mells and Ben Roberts arrived, giving Oregon seven more players to open fall camp - two more scholarship playe rs than the Ducks had in the spring."Going through the spring...when you're banged up, you realize, 'OK, this is the place where we got to try to make this a strength,'" Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "Casey and Jordon are obviously guys Coach Tui oti had worked with in the past. So we had a really intimate knowledge of them and their work ethic and what kind of players they are. That certainly helped us. "But I can't say enough good things. I'll tell you one guy that I don't think is getting enou gh praise is Brandon Dorlus. He didn't go through the spring. But Brandon's leadership, his work ethic, those guys follow in. I've been really excited to see that. Obviously, Popo and Keyon back is a big piece of our future success. Tony is an extreme pe rfectionist and (defensive coordinator Tosh) Lupoi also has an extensive background in the front seven. The Oregon Ducks who were limited or missed spring practice due to injury are all on track to return to the field during fall camp. Defensive tackles Brandon Dorlus, Popo Aumavae and Keyon Ware-Hudson, tight ends Cam McCormick and Patrick Herbert, and of fensive lineman Michael Wooten, were limited to non-contact practice in the spring due to offseason surgeries or because they were recovering from in-season injuries. "I think everybody should be ready to go," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said Friday at Pac- 12 media day. Inside linebacker Justin Flowe, safety Daymon David and a few other players were also limited in the spring. The front seven of Oregon's defense was stretched thin during the spring because of the various absences, but should be back to ful l strength when camp opens next week. - The Oregonian

Now that Thibodeaux is no longer with the Ducks program, the team will need a new leader on the defensive line. The good news for Oregon is that it has many talented players at the defensive end and line positions. Brandon Dorlus could be the player who fills Thibodeaux's footsteps as he finished with 25 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks last season. Oregon also has Popo Aumavae, who was a Coaches Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention last season as he finished the season with 36 tackles and three tackles for loss. The good news is the Ducks won their biggest game of the 2021 season without Thibodeaux as they defeated Ohio State 35-28 in Week 2. - Register Guard

The interior of Oregon's defensive line is the position group seeing the biggest overhaul this offseason. Austin Faoliu and Jordon Scott are both gone, off to the NFL as undrafted free agents, and Brandon Dorlus is the most prominent contributor returnin g to a deep group of defensive tackles. Dorlus, whose 12 tackles were third among Ducks defensive tackles last season, offers a lot of flexibility. He can play anywhere from nose or shade all the way to a traditional end at 4i, 5 or 6 technique depending on the personnel grouping. Third-year redshirt-freshmen Kristian Williams and Keyon Ware-Hudson are both going to see significant increases in playing time and could be among the bigger contributors up front.Dorlus had seven of his 12 tackles in Oregon's final three games, including both of his stops for loss and sack. He's quickly developed into one of UO's better interior linemen and a legitimate every-down player. His performance in the Pac-12 Championship game, mainly lined up against USC's Alijah Vera-Tucker, a first-round draft pick, was spectacular. For a former three-star recruit who the coaching staff more or less discovered thanks to recruiting Ge'mon Eaford out of the same high school, Dorlus is already outperforming his recruiting r anking. He was starting by the end of last season and should be the most widely-used defensive lineman on the roster next season. "Finally be part of the equation and to be counted on, it's a big responsibility but I think I'm ready for it," Dorlus said. "I can't wait for the season to start." In base, he'll play a 2i or 3 technique but Dorlus shouldn't leave the field on third-and-long and that wasn't said for Faoliu or Scott. - The Oregonian
