In USC's' 43-42 Pac-12 Championship loss to Utah in Salt Lake City, T rojan defenders missed 18 tackles, gave up 291 of the Utes' whopping 562 yards in the second half, allowed three first downs by penalty and had just one tackle for loss. Then on Jan. 2 they gave up 16 points in the final 4:07 of the season to succumb to Tulane, 46-45.

But head coach Lincoln Riley is keeping defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. But the Trojans are bulking up their defense. Via the transfer portal they will add Arizona defensive lineman Kyon Barrs, a second team All-Pac-12 honoree in 2021 and Oklahoma State linebacker Mason Cobb, second team All Big 12 in 2022. The Trojans also recruited nine top high school defenders, including three four-star prospects who include highly touted talents such as Braylan Shelby, an edge rusher, and Tackett Curtis, a linebacker. - Orange County Register

Wildcats coach Jedd Fisch said he expects defensive starters Kyon Barrs (foot) and Treydan Stukes (lower body) to be ready for the Sept. 3 opener at San Diego State. Barrs' snaps are being limited as he recovers from surgery; he did not participate in the scrimmage. Stukes has been out since Monday. "Right now I feel pretty confident that Stukes and Barrs are right on schedule to be able to play Sept. 3," Fisch said. "How long it takes between now and Sept. 3 will be a day-to-day situation." - Arizona Star News

After being sidelined for spring ball and most of the offseason, Arizona Wildcats wide receiver Jamarye Joiner and defensive tackle Kyon Barrs, both of whom suffered foot injuries in the spring, will be available for the start of preseason training camp on Wednesday, according to head coach Jedd Fisch at Pac-12 Media Day on Friday. Both Barrs and Joiner underwent surgery in Los Angeles with specialists tied to the L.A. Rams, the NFL team Fisch was an assistant for in 2018. For Joiner, the 6-foot-1-inch, 209-pound Tucson native and Cienega High School product will return to a wide receiver corps that includes UTEP transfer preseason All-Pac-12 selection Jacob Cowing, star freshman Tetairoa McMillan, Dorian Singer, Kevin Green, Anthony Simpson and A.J. Jones, among others.

The fifth-year Joiner will attempt to work his way back into Arizona's offense after three foot operations over the last two years for the "Jones fracture" he initially suffered during spring 2020. After returning in 2021, Joiner swapped reps at wide receiver and quarterback, totaling 204 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. Barrs, a 6-3, 297-pound All-Pac-12 selection, is expected to be among Arizona's top defensive players in 2022 after a 2021 campaign that included 33 tackles, eight stops for loss and a team-high five sacks in 10 games. - Arizona Star News
