BIG 12 FOOTBALL CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tony Mathis, WVU, RB, So.,...Mathis had 22 carries for a career-high 163 yards and two touchdowns in West Virginia's 43-40 win over No. 23 Baylor. He tallied WVU's most rushing yards in a game since Leddie Brown on Oct. 17, 2020, vs. Kansas (195) and reached 100 yards on the ground for the second time this season. The sophomore scored on a seven-yard run in the first quarter and added a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter for his second multiple-TD performance of the season. Mathis has five rushing scores this season and six in his career. - Big 12 Football

  10/13/22 - RB Tony Mathis Jr.rSr/2025, Houston, 5-11, 208 (DS#90 RB) + More +

Tony Mathis rushed for a career-high 163 yards and two touchdowns and Casey Legg kicked a 22-yard field goal with 33 seconds left to lift West Virginia to a 43-40 victory over Baylor on Thursday night. Mathis came up big in the absence of West Virginia's leading rusher, CJ Donaldson, who was ruled out of the game after entering the concussion protocol during a loss at Texas on Oct. 1. Mathis scored on a 34-yard run with 7:05 left and set up the winning field goal with a 37-yard run to the Baylor 8. He surpassed his previous best of 118 yards against Kansas last year. West Virginia (3-3, 1-2 Big 12) compiled 217 rushing yards.

Baylor had one last chance starting from its 23-yard line. But backup quarterback Kyron Drones threw two incompletions and was tackled near midfield on a scramble as time ran out. Defending Big 12 champion Baylor (3-3, 2-2) lost its second straight game despite rolling up 590 yards of offense. The Bears lost starting quarterback Blake Shapen in the third quarter when he slid at the end of a scramble and took a helmet-to-helmet hit from West Virginia's Andrew Wilson-Lamp. Wilson-Lamp was flagged for targeting. The call was upheld upon review and Wilson-Lamp was ejected. Shapen left the field, went to a medical tent to be evaluated and did not return. Shapen completed 14 of 22 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Drones replaced Shapen and led Baylor on two touchdown drives. After Qualan Jones scored on a 2-yard run with 13:39 remaining, West Virginia's Dante Stills blocked the extra-point kick, teammate Jacolby Spells picked up the loose ball and ran the length of the field to give the Mountaineers two points. Baylor still led at that point 37-33. - West Virginia/AP College Football

  09/17/22 - RB Tony Mathis Jr.rSr/2025, Houston, 5-11, 208 (DS#90 RB) + More +

Tony Mathis rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns, CJ Donaldson ran for 101 yards and three scores, and West Virginia breezed to a 65-7 victory over Towson on Saturday. On a day when West Virginia held a ceremony to honor some of its greatest offensive players, the Mountaineers (1-2) put together their best showing in a year, although it didn't quite make up for opening the season with close losses to No. 23 Pittsburgh and Kansas. West Virginia piled up 624 yards of offense, scored touchdowns on six of its seven first-half possessions and led its Championship Subdivision opponent 45-7 at halftime before pulling back with a short week before its next game.

Johnson, a freshman, had his second 100-yard rushing effort of the season and pushed his TD total to six. He had just nine carries, an average of 11.2-yards per attempt. He also blocked a punt in the opener against Pitt. Mathis exceeded his career total for touchdowns. He had one TD in 23 previous games. West Virginia had 316 rushing yards. Its six rushing touchdowns were the most since it had seven both against Connecticut and Western Michigan in 2007. JT Daniels completed 16 of 24 passes for 174 yards in the first half, including a 2-yard TD pass to Kaden Prather. Daniels was replaced by Garrett Greene, Will Crowder and Nicco Marchiol in the second half. - West Virginia/AP College Football
