Most players on Nebraska's roster have no doubt about which position they play. Rahmir Johnson has played both running back and slot receiver during fall camp. The question posed Thursday: What position is he? Johnson said he's a wideback. In other words , a positionless offensive weapon who can line up in the backfield or out wide like what Deebo Samuel did for the San Francisco 49ers a year ago. Johnson draws on different players for inspiration, though. He mentioned Tavon Austin, De'Anthony Thomas and Christian McCaffrey as the players he envisions his role being like - short, agile runners who can take quick carries and catch passes all the same.Add in some work as a gunner on the special teams unit, and it's clear Nebraska is setting Johnson up to be a do-it-all player for the 2022 season - a role he's completely embraced. "It's definitely different from running back and I have a lot to learn but I'm adjusting well," Johnson said. "I'm a fast learner so I'm kind of catching on but there's s till some stuff I have to pick up on. I have two good coaches that are helping me do that and I'm enjoying it." Nebraska's first-year running backs coach Bryan Applewhite has high expectations. When Applewhite joined Scott Frost's staff from TCU this offseason, he inherited a talented mix of players and then added a pair of his own recruits into the fold. The chal lenge at hand is getting all of the running backs to buy into the same philosophy. So far, so good. Applewhite delivered an update on the position group's progress during a Tuesday appearance on "Sports Nightly." "I'm just happy with the whole room," App lewhite said. "It's very rare when you come in to have 12 to 13 kids who work so hard because they love the game. If you can just get that, you're winning half the battle right there." Given the constant rotation of running backs Nebraska deployed in 202 1, establishing consistency at the position will be key as the Huskers head into fall camp. Applewhite offered no hints as to a depth chart. Instead, he offered remarks on each returning back.Sophomore Rahmir Johnson is the presumptive front-runne r for a big share of playing time after last season, when he carried the ball 112 times - the most of any Husker, by far. Plus, he showed his talent as a third-down back, hauling in 16 passes. Applewhite praised the sophomore's skills in pass protection and also said the back could work out of the slot in certain situations. "He's got extremely good vision and he learned to play with a better pad level as we went through the spring," Applewhite said.
