Illinois won't have three of its best players playing in the ReliaQuest Bowl with running back Chase Brown, safety Sydney Brown and cornerback Devon Witherspoon all opting out of the game to focus their efforts on the 2023 NFL draft. Brown led the Power 5 and was third in the FBS this season with 1,643 rushing yards along with 10 touchdowns. The first running back in program history to be named a Doak Walker Award finalist, Brown leaves Champaign as the school's second-leading career rusher (3,558 yards from 2019 to '22) behind Robert Holcombe (4,105 yards from 1994 to '97) and with the third-highest single-season rushing total behind Mikel Leshoure (1,697 yards in 2010) and Rashard Mendenhall (1,681 yards in 2007). Brown's twin brother, Sydney, a defensive back for the Illini, announced Saturday he was entering the draft. - News Gazette Tribune

One of the best running backs in college football this season was at Illinois. But Chase Brown has played his last game for the Illini, with the 5-foot-11, 205-pound Brown announcing on Friday he will declare for the NFL draft and skip the upcoming ReliaQuest Bowl against Mississippi State on Jan. 2. Brown rushed for 1,643 yards this season, third-most in a single season by an Illinois running back. But he won't get the chance to pursue the single-season record of 1,697 yards set by Mikel Leshoure in 2010.

Brown made his announcement via social media on Friday, less than a week after Illinois coach Bret Bielema said a decision on Brown's future was imminent. Brown is the third Illini player to declare for the NFL draft and opt out of the ReliaQuest Bowl. Brown's twin brother, Sydney Brown, is a safety for Illinois and decided to enter the NFL draft last Saturday. All-American cornerback Devon Witherspoon also made a similar decision last Saturday. - News Gazette Tribune

  10/29/22 - RB Chase BrownSr/2023, Illinois, 5-10, 209 (DS#10 RB) + More +

Chase Brown rushed for 149 yards and scored on consecutive series in the second quarter, helping No. 17 Illinois beat Nebraska 26-9 on Saturday. The Illini (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) beat the Cornhuskers for the third year in a row. They won a sixth straight game for the first time since 2011 and secured their first winning regular-season record since 2007. Nebraska (3-5, 2-3) lost quarterback Casey Thompson to an injury in the second quarter. It committed four turnovers and lost its 20th straight against a Top 25 opponent. Illinois' Tommy DeVito was 20 of 22 for 179 yards and two touchdowns. His 91% completion rate was a Memorial Stadium record for visiting quarterbacks with at least 20 attempts. The Illini's top-ranked defense held Nebraska to 29 yards on 20 plays in the second half and 248 for the game, the fewest by the Huskers since they finished with the same number against Michigan State in 2018.

Brown, the national rushing leader, extended his school-record streak of games with at least 100 yards to nine. He scored on a 1-yard run and a 12-yard pass in the second quarter to put Illinois up 20-9 at half. His short TD run came two plays after his twin brother Sydney Brown intercepted Thompson's tipped pass and returned it 37 yards to the Nebraska 11. The Huskers then went three-and-out, and DeVito finished an 11-play, 72-yard drive with his pass to Brown with 23 seconds left in the half. Brown also made a key downfield block to give Isaiah Williams a clear path to the end zone on a 46-yard catch-and-run on Illinois' opening possession. Williams' unforced error in the second half put Nebraska in position to cut into the lead. Williams caught a pass in open field and, untouched, dropped the ball at his 23 for the Illini's first lost fumble in five games. The Huskers gave the ball right back when Sydney Brown picked off his second pass on Chubba Purdy's ill-advised throw into the middle of the field, and they never advanced past their own 26 on their final four possessions. - Illinois/AP College Football

  10/23/22 - RB Chase BrownSr/2023, Illinois, 5-10, 209 (DS#10 RB) + More +

It has been an eventful stretch for Chase Brown. The Illinois star became the season's first 1,000-yard rusher in the Football Bowl Subdivision on Oct. 15 and only the third player in program history to reach the milestone in back-to-back years. He was named an Associated Press midseason All-American on Tuesday and the next day the Illini unveiled a "Chasing History" webpage to promote his candidacy for postseason honors. The fifth-year running back is the undisputed headliner of a resurgent Illinois team that, at No. 18, has its highest ranking since 2011 and is first in the Big Ten West. "I wanted this season to be something to remember," Brown said. "Right now we're just over halfway, and I'm not just happy with the wins. Personally, I think we can push this way further than where it is right now. I'm so excited to see where it can end up." Brown managed to rush for 1,005 yards last season despite missing two games because of injury, and he has prioritized taking care of his body with the Illini (6-1, 3-1) relying on him more this year.

He's carrying the ball an average of 10 times more per game, and he set a national single-game high with 41 attempts for 180 yards in a 26-14 win over Minnesota on Oct. 15. He also caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Tommy DeVito in that game. Illinois visits Nebraska this week, and backup running back Josh McCray, injured in the season opener, could be available to take some of the load off Brown. Brown's 1,059 yards rushing and his per-game averages of 27.4 carries and 29.6 scrimmage touches lead the nation. "He's a workhorse man," Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said. "Their scheme matches what he does really well, especially their counter game and their power game. He's a special back. He's got speed, twitch, quickness, power. He's got it all." - AP College Football

Chase Brown rushed for 180 yards on a career-high 41 carries and caught a 40-yard touchdown pass, Minnesota was limited to its fewest yards in five years, and No. 24 Illinois won its fifth straight game with a 26-14 victory Saturday. The Illini (6-1, 3-1) became bowl eligible for the first time since 2019 and will end the day tied for first in the Big Ten West. Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 127 yards, his nation-leading 14th straight 100-yard game and the bulk of the Gophers' 180 total yards. It was the fewest yards against Illinois by a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent since at least 2000.

Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan, held to just 21 yards on 4-for-12 passing, left early in the fourth quarter after taking a hit to the head. Athan Kaliakmanis entered for the Gophers (4-2, 1-2) and was intercepted twice. Illinois quarterback Tommy DeVito, back from an ankle injury that forced him out of last week's game at Iowa in the first half, ran for a 5-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to put the Illini up 20-14. He completed 25 of 32 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown. Brown went over 1,000 yards rushing for a second straight year with his eighth straight 100-yard game. He now has 13 100-yard games, second most at Illinois behind Robert Holcombe's 16 from 1994-97. Brown got wide open on a wheel route for his 40-yard touchdown to finish Illinois' nine-play, 75-yard drive to open the game. Fabrizio Pinton tacked on a 31-yard field goal to give the Illini a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter. - Illinois/AP College Football

Chase Brown rushed for 129 yards, Tommy DeVito had three short touchdown keepers and Illinois trounced Wisconsin 34-10 on Saturday to give coach Bret Bielema a triumphant return to Camp Randall Stadium. Illinois (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) scored 17 points off Wisconsin turnovers and scored the game's final 27 points to win as a 6½-point underdog. The Illini sacked Graham Mertz six times and held the Badgers to 2 yards rushing on 24 carries. Bielema had gone 68-24 in seven years as Wisconsin's coach before leaving for Arkansas at the end of the 2012 regular season as the Badgers were preparing for a Rose Bowl appearance. Wisconsin won at least a share of the Big Ten title each of his last three seasons.

He was fired at Arkansas in 2017 after going 29-34 and took over Illinois' program in December 2020. The Badgers won 24-0 at Illinois last season, but this was the first time Bielema had faced Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium. Bielema was the first coach to take an opposing Big Ten team to a school he coached to a Big Ten title since John Pont coached Northwestern in a 1973 game at Indiana. Pont had led Indiana to a share of the 1967 Big Ten crown. Bielema received a smattering of boos when his name was announced in the pregame introductions, though the stands were less than 20% full at that point about half an hour before the 11 a.m. local time kickoff. A much larger crowd showed significantly more displeasure as the Badgers got dismantled for a second straight week. Wisconsin (2-3, 0-2) was coming off a 52-21 loss at No. 3 Ohio State. - Illinois/AP College Football

Chase Brown became the first Illinois running back to rush for 100-plus yards in five straight games, Tommy DeVito passed for 329 yards and three touchdowns and the Fighting Illini blanked Chattanooga 31-0 on Thursday night. Illinois improved to 3-1 and is off to its best start since 2015. Brown capped a five-play, 64-yard scoring drive with a 9-yard touchdown run after the defense forced Chattanooga (3-1) into a three-and-out on its first drive. He finished with 108 rushing yards on 20 carries and currently leads all FBS rushers with 604 yards through four games. The closest the Mocs came to scoring came early in the second quarter when they drove to the Illinois 16-yard line. Jartavius Martin picked off a Preston Hutchinson pass in the end zone to end the Mocs' threat. The Illini recorded their first shutout since a 2015 win over Western Illinois.

Chattanooga went just 4 of 14 on third downs and gained 142 total yards. Illinois piled up 502 yards of offense. Hutchinson was sacked four times and completed just 6 of 18 passes for 49 yards with two interceptions. Illinois nearly quadrupled Chattanooga's total first-half yardage, 332 yards to 84 yards, and led 24-0 at intermission. Thursday night marked the first time in Illinois football history that two receivers tallied more than 100 receiving yards and a running back ran for more than 100 yards in the same game. Pat Bryant caught six passes for 112 yards and a touchdown, while Isaiah Williams hauled in nine passes for 103 yards and a score. Williams' 63-yard touchdown off a screen pass made it 31-0 with 4:56 left in the third. DeVito became the first Illinois quarterback to pass for more than 300 yards in a game since Brandon Peters threw for 369 yards at Michigan State in 2019. - Illinois/AP College Football

Chase Brown rushed for 146 yards on 20 carries, Tommy DeVito threw for 196 yards and two scores and the Illinois defense stifled Virginia's once-potent attack to lead the Fighting Illini to a 24-3 victory on Saturday. Things looked dicey for Illinois (2-1, 0-1 Big Ten) after DeVito threw an interception on his first pass attempt of the day and when Brown fumbled after a first-down run. However, a dominant defense cleared the path to victory as the Illini held Virginia (1-1) to 1 of 16 on third-down conversions.

Cornerback Devon Witherspoon shined with seven tackles and three pass breakups and defensive end Keith Randolph came up with 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and seven tackles. DeVito bounced back to complete 17 of 25 passes, including 39-yard and 2-yard touchdown throws to tight ends Michael Marchese and Tip Reiman, respectively, to help the Illini take a 21-3 lead into the half. True freshman Matthew Bailey put Illinois ahead 7-3 by recovering a muffed punt that bounced into the end zone for a touchdown with 5:38 left in the opening quarter. Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong struggled to find his receivers, completing just 13 of 32 passes for 180 yards with two interceptions. He threw for 405 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-14 win against the Illini in 2021. - Illinois/AP College Football

Chase Brown scored three touchdowns and rushed for 151 yards and Tommy DeVito completed 27 of 37 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns in his debut as Illinois breezed past Wyoming 38-6 in a season-opener on Saturday. Only 41 seconds elapsed before Brown found his way into the end zone, latching onto a 14-yard pass from DeVito to put Illinois in front. Brown surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards - including his freshman season at Western Michigan - on an 18-yard run in the second quarter.

Brown followed with an 11-yard TD run and kicker Caleb Griffin connected from 27 yards out to give Illinois a 17-3 halftime lead. Wyoming quarterback Andrew Peasley completed just six of 21 passes for 40 yards in his debut. Cowboys running back Titus Swen rushed for 98 yards on 17 carries, while Peasley added 76 rushing yards on eight attempts. The Cowboys converted just 1 of 12 third-down attempts, while the Illini were successful on 7 of 16. John Hoyland had field goals of 22 yards and 46 yards for the Cowboys' lone scores. Illinois upped its lead to 31-6 early in the fourth quarter when Brown scored on a 5-yard run. - Illinois/AP College Football

Chase Brown would prefer to get every carry possible. The Illinois running back isn't going to the coaching staff asking to touch the ball less - in practice or on game day. But Brown also understands just how much is expected of him this season. If that means a lighter workload during an August training camp practice, so be it. "I'm a person who likes to go, but I also have to respect coach's decisions," Brown said. "With load management, if they want to hold me back one day, I understand that. On a load management day, I'm taking as many mental reps as possible. Even when I'm not in, I'm in. I know what's coming. I'm confident and just looking forward to competing this year. I can't wait until Wyoming and Indiana and anybody else down that schedule." - News Gazette Tribune

A day before Big Ten football Media Days starts in Indianapolis on Tuesday, cleveland.com compiled results of its 12th annual Big Ten poll. And beat writers who cover the league aren't thinking too fondly of what Illinois can accomplish in its second season under Bret Bielema. The Illini are picked to finish sixth in the Big Ten West, only ahead of Northwestern. Illinois received 65 points, with Northwestern checking in at seventh with 61 points.

Wisconsin is the favorite to win the Big Ten West, with the Badgers receiving 246 points and 31 first-place votes. Writers pegged Iowa in second place with 198 points, followed by Minnesota in third with 162 points, Purdue in fourth with 153 points and Nebraska in fifth with 123 points. No Illini players received any votes for those two individual honors. Illinois finished 5-7 last season, including 4-5 in the Big Ten as the Illini wound up fifth in the Big Ten West. The Illini kick off training camp on Saturday in Champaign and open the season at 3 p.m. on Aug. 27 against Wyoming at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. - News Gazette Tribune

Chase Brown rushed 33 times for 150 yards, and the Illinois defense delivered six sacks and two interceptions of Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan on the way to a 14-6 victory on Saturday. Kerby Joseph picked off Morgan at the Illini 45-yard line with 38 seconds left to halt the too-little-too-late rally by the Gophers (6-3, 4-2), whose four-game winning streak that catapulted them into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten West Division was stopped cold. Morgan scored on a fourth-and-1 bootleg with 4:56 to go after going 7 for 8 for 68 yards on that drive to pull the Gophers within one score.

The Illini (4-6, 3-4) finished the game with seven consecutive punts, except for a kneel-down at the end of each half, but Brown moved the chains with a 7-yard run off left tackle on third-and-4 near midfield around the 3-minute mark. Blake Hayes pooched his last punt to land it at the 2, leaving only 1:12 remaining and no timeouts for Morgan and the Gophers. After a 38-yard strike to Dylan Wright, Morgan was taken down for an 11-yard sack by Isaiah Gay so hard the Illini linebacker hurt himself on the play. The damage was done much earlier by the Illinois defense, which constantly pressured Morgan and forced him out of the pocket. Ky Thomas had 16 carries for 60 yards, but the Gophers again failed to find a rhythm with the ball. Morgan was sacked by Owen Carney Jr. on fourth-and-6 at the 22 to end that drive in the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Illini were beating them at their own game. Brandon Peters attempted a season-low nine passes, but he was as sharp as he needed to be with seven completions for 80 yards and a touchdown to help Illinois keep hope of bowl game eligibility alive. - Illinois/AP College Football

Chase Brown's physical gains are going to require those in charge of maintaining the Illinois football roster to stay on their toes. The 5-foot-11 running back was listed at 195 pounds for his second season with the Illini after transferring from Western Michigan in 2019. Entering Year 3 - the first under coach Bret Bielema and his staff - Brown's online biography shows him checking in at 200 pounds. About that. "I'm running around at 210 right now," Brown said Wednesday outside Memorial Stadium following the third day of training camp. "My strength's through the roof." Brown led the Illini with 540 rushing yards on 104 carries and scored three touchdowns last season. He showed the ability to escape defenders both vertically and horizontally across the field.

It helped him land a spot on the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation's best running back. None of that left Brown satisfied. Evident by the offseason commitment to bettering his body. "I remember I sat down with Coach B, and one of the first things (he said), he's like, 'You know what? You're going to stay around 205, 210," Brown said. "That's all he needed to say to me. That kind of motivated me to transform my body." - News Gazette Tribune

For the second time in three days, an Illinois football player was named to a preseason award watch list. This time it's redshirt junior running back Chase Brown, who on Wednesday cracked the Doak Walker Award watch list. The honor is bestowed upon college football's top running back each season. This follows Monday's news of super-senior linebacker Jake Hansen being named to the Bednarik Award watch list for the nation's top defensive player. This is Brown's first preseason award watch list. He paced the Illini last season with 104 carries for 540 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, adding seven receptions for 64 yards. - News Gazette Tribune
