 Cornell Wheeler, Kansas, Player News

A former Michigan reserve linebacker who's not far removed from receiving a four-star grade as a high school prospect, Cornell Wheeler announced on Monday he's transferring to the University of Kansas. "Blessed to be a Jayhawk," Wheeler tweeted. "(Let's) work." Wheeler spent just one season with the Wolverines after signing with Michigan in the Class of 2020, when Rivals rated him as a four-star inside linebacker and the No. 6 recruit in the state of Michigan. Listed at 6 feet and 231 pounds on Michigan's roster before he entered the portal, Wheeler didn't play in any games for the Wolverines in 2020. In an interview with Jon Kirby of Jayhawk Slant, Wheeler said one of the reasons he chose KU was because it felt like "the right place" for him. - Lawrence Journal World

Cornell Wheeler, a sophomore linebacker from West Bloomfield, Mich., who didn't play a snap last fall, entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal this week, a team spokesman confirmed to MLive on Wednesday. A reason for Wheeler's decision was not immediately known. He has not addressed the move publicly, nor did he return a message seeking comment. Wheeler was a standout at West Bloomfield High School under Ron Bellamy, who left his job in January to join the Michigan coaching staff. And while Bellamy doesn't preside over the linebackers, he was brought on to help forge a cohesive culture and help bridge the gap between players and staff. Instead, his star inside linebacker in high school appears headed elsewhere. The 6-foot, 231-pound Wheeler took part in Michigan's practice schedule this spring, and figured to be part of a young, inexperienced linebacker group moving forward. - Ann Arbor News
