 *Darnell Washington, Georgia, Player News

Georgia tight end Darnell Washington, a key piece of the Bulldogs offense in 2022 as they won second consecutive national championship, declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He announced his decision on Twitter on Thursday and it was viewed by more than 180,000 viewers within hours. Washington, a 6-foot-7, 265-pound tight end, played three seasons at Georgia and saw his role grow each season. He appeared in just four games his freshman year before playing in eight contests as Georgia won the national title in 2021.

He burst into a more prominent role in 2022 while running in tandem with Brock Bowers. Washington hauled in 28 passes for 454 yards and two touchdowns in 2022. Washington's combination of size, power, speed and agility make him an extremely intriguing NFL prospect. Washington is raw in the finer points of the tight end position, but he demonstrated his ability to grow his skillset and there's no question he has room to grow into an elite offensive weapon. Where he goes in the 2023 NFL Draft will be interesting to follow. - Darnell Washington's Twitter account

Darnell Washington is as close to home as he's ever been for a Georgia football game, but the Las Vegas native's availability for Monday's national championship game could come down to a pregame decision. "I feel like that's the call right now," the junior tight end said Saturday. "Go through warmups pregame and just go from there see whatever happens happens." Coach Kirby Smart provided an update on Sunday morning in his final press conference ahead of the 7:30 p.m. game against TCU in SoFi Stadium.

Washington sustained an ankle injury in the Peach Bowl win over Ohio State on Dec. 31. ESPN.com reported Saturday that Washington had not practiced this week. "We're hopeful we can get Darnell ready to play," Smart said. "He's continued to work really hard, done a lot of rehab. I know he really wants to. This is his first chance to play on the West Coast where he's from in Vegas. This game means a lot to him. I know it's an important one." Washington is fifth on the team with 27 catches for 426 yards and 2 touchdowns and plays a crucial role as a blocker with his 6-foot-7, 280-pound frame. - Athens Daily Banner

UGA football likely will be without two expected key contributors for its top five season opening matchup against Clemson on Sept. 4. Georgia confirmed Wednesday that tight end Darnell Washington and nickel back Tykee Smith sustained foot injuries, but didn't detail how long they may be out. The players underwent surgery that could keep them out four to six weeks, according to a source.

"Darnell Washington and Tykee Smith sustained foot injuries during practice this week," coach Kirby Smart said in a statement released Wednesday afternoon. "They are both undergoing treatment and have an excellent prognosis. Their status is day to day." Ready to read more on UGA athletics? Join our 'Bulldogs Extra' newsletter Washington, a sophomore, is a big target for JT Daniels who came on at the end of last season. He had 7 catches for 166 yards last season. "At 6-7, 280 pounds with ball skills and he can run," offensive coordinator Todd Monken said last week of the Las Vegas native. "He is only going to get better. He's only really scratched the surface." - Athens Daily Banner
