  01/04/23 - RB *Deuce VaughnJr/2023, Kansas State, 5-05, 179 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Deuce Vaughn, the second-leading rusher in Kansas State football history, has played his last game as a Wildcat. Vaughn, a two-time consensus All-American as an all-purpose back, announced on social media Monday that he is passing up his senior season and entering the 2023 NFL draft. Vaughn rushed for 1,558 yards this season, moving into second place on the school career chart with 3,604. Only former All-American and K-State Hall of Famer Darren Sproles had more with 4,979 from 2001-04.

Vaughn's 1,936 all-purpose yards this year - he also caught 42 passes for 378 yards - pushed him into second place all-time for the Wildcats with 5,029, which again trails only Sproles' 6,812 total. Vaughn, who repeatedly brushed aside questions about his future until the end of the season, made his announcement two days after rushing for 133 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown, in K-State's 45-20 Sugar Bowl loss to Alabama. - Topeka Capital Journal

  12/20/22 - RB *Deuce VaughnJr/2023, Kansas State, 5-05, 179 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Deuce Vaughn doesn't know if he will return to Kansas State next year and terrorize Big 12 defenses for one more season. There is a chance that the junior running back will declare early for the NFL Draft and spend the rest of his football career playing at the professional level. After piling up 4,751 total yards and scoring 42 touchdowns for the Wildcats over the past three seasons, the two-time consensus All-American will have a difficult decision to make about his future at some point in the coming weeks. He doesn't know which way he will ultimately lean.

But Vaughn can say one thing with absolute certainty at the moment: He will play against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The term "opt out" is simply not in his vocabulary. "The Sugar Bowl is a game I have wanted to play in since I was a little kid," Vaughn said. "I have watched it every single year, going back to when Ohio State was playing against Alabama with Ezekiel Elliott. Just going up against Alabama after all the matchups they have had playing Clemson and Ohio State and everyone else, this type of game is something I am going to relish. Playing in the Superdome is going to be big time." Vaughn is so amped for the Sugar Bowl that he promised to wait until after the game is over on Dec. 31 to let himself ponder his future. - The Kansas City Star

Ty Zentner kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime as 13th-ranked Kansas State beat No. 3 TCU 31-28 in the Big 12 championship game Saturday, leaving the Horned Frogs to wait another day to find out if they had already done enough to get into the four-team College Football Playoff. The Wildcats set up the winning field goal after TCU (12-1) had the opening possession of overtime and Kendre Miller was stopped short on consecutive plays from inside the 1. Deuce Vaughn ran for 130 yards and a touchdown and Will Howard threw two TDs for the Wildcats (10-3, No. 10 CFP), who six weeks earlier had jumped out to a 28-10 lead early in the second quarter before TCU scored the game's last 28 points.

That was one of five games the Horned Frogs (12-1, No. 3 CFP) won when trailing after halftime. But they couldn't do it again with the chance to guarantee being the first Big 12 team other than Oklahoma to make the playoff. TCU, the first Big 12 team to complete a regular season undefeated since Texas in 2009, could still get into the playoff. While their case was helped when fourth-ranked Southern California (11-2) lost 47-24 to Utah in the Pac-12 championship game Friday night, the Frogs now have to wait until the final CFP rankings come out Sunday. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said before the game that TCU, with first-year coach Sonny Dykes, already deserved to be in the playoff. "You look at their strength of schedule. You think about how they've performed all year long," Yormark said. "I think regardless, they should be in, for sure." - Kansas State/AP College Football

  11/26/22 - RB *Deuce VaughnJr/2023, Kansas State, 5-05, 179 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Will Howard threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns, Deuce Vaughn ran for 147 yards and a score, and No. 15 Kansas State pounded Kansas 47-27 on Saturday night to earn a shot at payback against TCU in the Big 12 championship game. Malik Knowles added a pair of touchdown runs, and Philip Brooks and Sammy Wheeler also reached the end zone, as the Wildcats (9-3, 7-2, No. 12 CFP) beat their biggest rival for the 14th straight time in a game they needed to win. Kansas State blew a 28-10 lead and lost 38-28 to the Horned Frogs during the regular season. Now, they'll face each other again on Dec. 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with a College Football Playoff spot likely on the line for TCU. It will be the first time the Wildcats play in the Big 12 title game, which went on hiatus from 2010-17, since toppling then-No. 1 Oklahoma in 2003 during Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder's first tenure.

The Horned Frogs were beaten by the Sooners in their only previous appearance in the 2017 championship game. Jalon Daniels threw for 168 yards while running for a touchdown, and Devin Neal also had two TD runs, as the Jayhawks - bowl-bound for the first time since 2008 - finished the regular season by losing six of their final seven games. Kansas (6-6, 3-6) made enough mistakes in the first quarter alone Saturday night to fill an entire game. The result was a hole it could never escape. The trouble began when O.J. Burroughs muffed a punt after a nice stand by the Jayhawks' defense, and Knowles needed one play to scoot in from the 5 for a touchdown. And after Kansas answered with a 75-yard scoring drive, its defense blew the coverage on Wheeler on a 42-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing kickoff, Trevor Wilson was mobbed at the 10-yard line, and another penalty on the return buried the Kansas offense. On third down, Bryce Cabeldue was called for holding in the end zone to give Kansas State a safety. After the free kick, the Wildcats cruised to the end zone again for a 23-7 lead after one quarter. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Will Howard threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns, Deuce Vaughn ran for 158 yards and another score, and No. 22 Kansas State dealt ninth-ranked Oklahoma State its first shutout loss since 2009 with a 48-0 victory Saturday. Kade Warner caught five passes for 97 yards and two scores, and Malik Knowles had eight catches for 113 yards, while a late interception gave the Wildcats (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) their first shutout of the Cowboys since a 10-0 win on Nov. 21, 1992. Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders was just 13 of 26 for 147 yards with an interception before landing hard on his shoulder midway through the fourth quarter. The star quarterback did not return to the game. Kansas State scored touchdowns on its first two possessions, finished with 495 yards of total offense and held Oklahoma State (6-2, 3-2), which had been the nation's No. 3 scoring offense at 44.7 points per game, to just 217 yards.

The Cowboys' most lopsided loss in nearly 18 seasons under coach Mike Gundy was also their first shutout loss to anyone since Nov. 28, 2009, when they lost 27-0 to Oklahoma in the Bedlam game. The Wildcats have had some strangely easy wins over Oklahoma State. The last time a Gundy team was held to 12 points or fewer was in a 31-12 loss in Manhattan in 2018, and the last time the Cowboys trailed any game by at least 38 points was during a 48-14 loss to the Wildcats in 2014. The biggest question surrounding Kansas State was the health of its own quarterback, Adrian Martinez, who played just four snaps in last week's loss to TCU because of a knee injury. And while he warmed up with the starters Saturday, it was the veteran backup Howard who headed out to the field on the opening possession of the game. Howard proceeded to torture the banged-up Cowboys defense for the next 30 minutes. He capped the opening drive by hitting Warner on fourth-and-10 for a 38-yard TD reception. Then, after Vaughn ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run, Howard threw a 31-yard third-down scoring strike to Phillip Brooks to make it 21-0. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Deuce Vaughn ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns, the Kansas State defense picked off Missouri on four straight possessions in the second half, and the Wildcats blew out the Tigers 40-12 on Saturday in the first meeting of old Big 12 rivals in more than a decade. Adrian Martinez added 101 yards passing while running for a touchdown, and Phillip Brooks returned a punt 76 yards for another score, as the Wildcats (2-0) weathered a long lightning delay to finish off a dominant performance. They picked off Brady Cook twice in the second half, then did the same to backup Jack Abraham, before Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz put his starter back in for the fourth quarter. But by that point, the Wildcats had extended their lead to 33-6 and the only drama left was whether they would keep the Tigers (1-1) out of the end zone.

The Tigers finally got in on the game's final play, thanks to an untimed down because of a penalty. Cook finished 15 of 27 for 128 yards while Abraham missed all three of his throws - unless you count the two caught by the Wildcats. Cook did have 56 yards rushing, but a good chunk of that came while running from pressure. The game began under light rain that soon turned into a driving storm, making things seem even worse for the Tigers. They drove for a field goal to open the game, then punted four straight times; three of those were three-and-outs. Meanwhile, the Kansas State offense plugged along with ruthless efficiency. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Chris Klieman thought Kansas State had a nice set of offensive plays ready for the opening series of the season. The Wildcats only got to call one of them Saturday night. That's because Malik Knowles took the opening handoff 75 yards for a score, setting the tone for the rest of the game, and Deuce Vaughn proceeded to run for 126 yards and another touchdown in a 34-0 rout of overmatched South Dakota. "We won the toss, took the football and scored on the first play," Klieman said with a smile. "We had a really nice series of plays that we were going to operate and we ended up scoring on the first play." Not that the Wildcats ever slowed down.

Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez, who was just 11 of 15 for 53 yards through the air, added 39 yards rushing and a touchdown for Kansas State. Desmond Purnell returned an early blocked punt for a touchdown, and backup running back DJ Giddens reached the end zone midway through the third quarter to extend the lead to 34-0. By that point, the Wildcats had built such a comfortable lead that they began resting their starters, and they in turn began thinking ahead to next weekend. Former conference rival Missouri is returning for the first time in more than a decade. "I know they're a really good program, lots of talent," Klieman said. "I'm excited to have that rivalry game played again." Carson Camp had 139 yards passing and an interception for the Coyotes, who couldn't overcome an abundance of dropped passes, silly penalties and other miscues against a team that expects to contend for the Big 12 title. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Deuce Vaughn has a new name, image and likeness deal that is sure to be of interest to Kansas State football fans. Vaughn, an All-American running back who is entering his junior season with the Wildcats, has partnered with Charlie Hustle Clothing on a T-shirt that is now available for purchase via the Kansas City company's website. The shirt is lavender, and it depicts Vaughn running with the football in a K-State uniform on top of the words "Deuce is Loose." A copy of Vaughn's signature can also be found on the shirt in white script. Vaughn is believed to be the first K-State football player to strike this kind of NIL deal with a clothing company. - The Kansas City Star

How does Kansas State's dynamic 5-foot-6, 176-pound running back Deice Vaughan propose to live up to the hype that already includes preseason all-conference recognition as well as a place on watch lists for most major national awards? The same way that he always has. "Just giving the same amount of work that I've given these past two years," Vaughn said recently during Big 12 media days in Arlington, Texas. "Going into my freshman year and going into my sophomore year, I've had to elevate the way that I take care of my body (and) the way that I work out and the way that I also take care of my film (study). "Going into my junior year, a lot of eyes are on you, so you have to do more, and I'm really focused on that part of my game and taking care of everything, so that whenever it's time to go play, that's what I'm doing - just playing."

Vaughn started seven of 10 games as a freshman in 2020 while leading the Wildcats in rushing with 642 yards and seven touchdowns and catching 25 passes for 434 yards and two more scores. Last year he amassed 1,404 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground, plus caught a team-high 49 passes for 468 yards and four TDs. That included nine 100-yard rushing games, including each of the last six, capped by a 146-yard, three-touchdown performance in the Wildcats' 42-20 Texas Bowl victory over LSU. - Topeka Capital Journal

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Deuce Vaughn (Jr.), Kansas State,...Born Christopher Vaughn II, he has been called Deuce because his mom, Marquette, picked it out disliked family members calling him junior. She was a fan of the New Orleans Saints and their star running back Deuce McAllister. Deuce's dad is a scout for the Dallas Cowboys and the family moved frequently following Vaughn Sr.'s changing football jobs. They settled in Round Rock, Texas and Deuce attended Cedar Ridge High School, where he played football and ran track.

As a senior, Vaughn broke Cedar Ridge's single-season rushing record with 1,940 yards. Vaughn entered his 2020 freshman season at Kansas State as one of the Wildcats' top running backs. He finished the season with 642 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 123 carries, 25 receptions for 434 yards and two touchdowns, and seven kickoff returns for 145 yards. He was named the Big 12 Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year and second team All-Conference. - Kansas State Football

It no longer bothers Deuce Vaughn that most of the colleges in his home state of Texas ignored him as a high school recruit, but he still considers himself an underdog because of his size. Turns out, it's hard to forget about someone telling you rather bluntly that "you're too small to play college football." "That happened numerous times," Vaughn said this week at Big 12 Media Days. "I don't want to name any schools, but I had several Power 5 coaches tell me I wasn't a fit for their program, because they were looking for a different demographic as far as a running back. They wanted someone bigger. I still use that as a chip on my shoulder, because I know some people will always have doubts about me." That may, indeed, be the case. But it's getting harder and harder to find a college football expert who doesn't believe in Vaughn.

So what if he is only 5-foot-6 and 172 pounds? He led the Wildcats to eight wins last season as a sophomore by rushing for 1,404 yards and catching 49 passes for 468 yards. So versatile is Vaughn that he has already earned consensus All-American honors as an all-purpose player. When he first arrived at K-State, coaches talked about trying to limit his touches or using him as a scat back because they weren't sure if his body was ready to handle a traditional workhorse role. But those fears are long gone. He has proven himself too talented to take off the field and too durable for a pitch count. "No, there is not a limit," K-State coach Chris Klieman said. "We are going to keep doing what we did with him last year. We're going to use him as the featured back and he can be an every down back." - The Kansas City Star

Kansas State football players soon will no longer be standing on the sideline when it comes to profiting off of their name, image and likeness. Manhattan NIL Club, a NIL collective ran by current K-State football players, was announced over social media by a large number of Wildcat players on Friday. Currently, K-State athletes are served by two different NIL collectives, The Wildcats' Den and Wildcat NIL, both of which popped up earlier this year. Each group is ran by former Wildcat players. While those serve as middle-men to help facilitate NIL opportunities and payments, Manhattan NIL Club will offer a more direct line from fan to player.

The club is advertising 1,000 year-long memberships, called Access Passes, that will allow members to attend both in-person and digital events with K-State football players throughout the year. That digital content will include everything from a members-only message board and chat room to player generated content where players will discuss things like past and upcoming games, practice updates and recruiting stories. The players have partnered with YOKE, a platform that provides tools that allow them to launch a paywalled community. - Manhattan Mercury

Deuce Vaughn was reminded of what it takes to be an elite player earlier this spring when he served as a counselor at a football camp in Santa Monica, California with some of the biggest names in the college game. He got to meet Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, Texas running back Bijan Robinson and several other players who are considered preseason Heisman contenders. Spending time with them away from the football field was a thrill for him. "To be able to hang out with guys of that caliber and to be able to pick their brains and talk to them about football and build relationships with them was big time," Vaughn said. "I got to see the other side of things. You have all these amazing players there that you play against every weekend but I got to know them as people." K-State football coach Chris Klieman has long praised Vaughn as one of the most mature players on the team, despite his young age.

But Vaughn seems to be an even more sophisticated football player now that he has returned to Manhattan for summer workouts. When asked if seeing former teammates Skylar Thompson and Russ Yeast reach the NFL made him think about his own professional future, Vaughn didn't blink. "I'm not looking ahead that far," he said. Vaughn is more concerned with helping the Wildcats compete for a Big 12 championship next season, which he thinks is possible with the arrival of Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez at quarterback. - The Kansas City Star

Deuce Vaughn ran for 121 yards and a touchdown, Sammy Wheeler had a touchdown catch along with a crucial fourth-down grab, and Kansas State beat mistake-prone West Virginia 34-17 on Saturday. Skylar Thompson had just 138 yards passing for the Wildcats (7-3, 4-3 Big 12), but the senior made a couple crucial throws when the Mountaineers (4-6, 2-5) had whittled a 24-3 deficit to seven midway through the fourth quarter. Jarret Doege had 268 yards passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions for West Virginia, which had won five straight against the Wildcats dating to the 2015 season. Leddie Brown added 85 yards on the ground.

West Virginia began digging a big hole when Doege was picked on the game's second play, his throw skipping off Winston Wright Jr.'s hands and into those of Russ Yeast. Kansas State promptly marched 55 yards to take a 7-0 lead. A few minutes later, the Mountaineers' VanDarius Cowan hit Thompson with a helmet-to-helmet blow and was ejected. They eventually got the ball back, but a personal foul for a chop block forced the Mountaineers to punt. The Wildcats' Ty Bowman slipped around the edge to block it, and teammate Marvin Martin picked up the loose ball for a 14-0 lead. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Deuce Vaughn led Kansas State with a career-high 162 yards rushing and three touchdowns, Skylar Thompson shredded Kansas through the air before a cheap shot knocked him out of the game in the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats cruised to a 35-10 victory over the Jayhawks on Saturday. Thompson was 19 of 24 for 244 yards and a touchdown before he was hit by the Jayhawks' Gavin Potter out of bounds along the Kansas State sideline. Thompson remained on the ground for several minutes before finally getting up. The personal foul put the ball just outside the goal line, and Vaughn plowed in for his final rushing TD of the day. Vaughn also caught five passes for 60 yards, and Malik Knowles had 94 yards receiving and a touchdown, as the Wildcats (6-3, 3-3 Big 12) beat their rival for the eighth consecutive time at Memorial Stadium and 13th straight overall.

Devin Neal had 62 yards rushing for the Jayhawks (1-8, 0-6), who were down to third-string quarterback Jalon Daniels by the third quarter. Jason Bean was banged up early but was ineffective anyway, and backup Miles Kendrick was carted off after getting hurt on his second play of the game. Daniels finished 13 of 19 for 109 yards and a score. The Jayhawks trailed 21-3 by halftime and it could have been much worse. On offense, they watched running back Torry Locklin get carted off the field before Bean and Kendrick got hurt, and they saw normally sure-footed Jacob Borcila miss one of his two field-goal attempts. On defense, the Jayhawks allowed the Wildcats to gain a staggering 10.7 yards with every snap. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Deuce Vaughn scored a rushing touchdown with less than two minutes to play and Kansas State held on to beat FCS-member Southern Illinois 31-23 on Saturday. The Wildcats defense forced a fumble on Southern Illinois' following possession to seal it. The Wildcats held the Salukis scoreless in the second half and surrendered just 126 yards. "We're excited about getting the win," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. "I know the league they play in really well, and I know if we let them hang around they'll cause you trouble." Kansas State starting quarterback Skylar Thompson left the game in the first quarter due to injury.

Thompson appeared to suffer a non-contact injury in attempting to block for running back Vaughn. Thompson, who is a sixth year senior, missed all but three games last year due to an injury to his throwing shoulder that required surgery. Thompson made his 32nd start at quarterback as a Wildcat, which tied him for most in school history. "I was pretty emotional, I saw it happen last year and kind of had déjà vu," Klieman said. "I'm devastated for him. We'll pray for the best." Vaughn ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns while Malik Knowles had 112 receiving yards for Kansas State (2-0). Will Howard went 8-for-17 passing for 76 yards with a rushing touchdown and an interception. - Kansas State/AP College Football

If there is one area of certainty when it comes to Kansas State's offense, it is the agreement that for the Wildcats to be successful in 2021, they have to get the ball to Deuce Vaughn. The only question: How and how often? Ask Vaughn, the Wildcats' breakout star at running back last year as a true freshman, and the answer to the second question is simple. "I'm ready to go," he said with a smile. "As many touches as they'll give me, every single time I touch the ball, I'm ready to go. "If that's 25 or if that's 10, I'm ready to go to play."

If only it were that simple. As dynamic a talent as he is - 642 yards rushing and 5.2 per carry, a team-high 25 catches for 434 yards and seven kickoff returns with a 20-yard average - his coaches worry about just how much punishment his 5-foot-6, 173-pound body can absorb, especially over a 12-game season. Last year he averaged 15.5 touches in 10 games as a rusher, receiver and return man. Head coach Chris Klieman has said before 25 might be an optimum number of touches. Offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham added that just the threat of Vaughn on the field is valuable. - Topeka Capital Journal

Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn earned another preseason honor Wednesday when he was named to the watch list for the Doak Walker award. Vaughn, a sophomore, was also named to the Maxwell Award watch list earlier this week. He's the first Wildcat to be named Doak Walker watch list since Alex Barnes in 2018. Vaughn joined 2021 first-round picks Najee Harris and Travis Etienne as the only running backs to total 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards last season. He led all true freshmen with 1,076 scrimmage yards and was named 247Sports' True Freshmen of the Year for his efforts. - Manhattan Mercury

Kansas State's Deuce Vaughn picked up his latest accolade Monday, landing on the Football Writers Association of America's (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team. It marks the eighth time a Wildcat has been named to the team since the FWAA began picking freshman All-Americans in 2001. Vaughn rushed for 642 yards and seven touchdowns and hauled in 25 passes for 434 yards and two scores in 10 games this fall. His rushing and receiving yards were both team highs in 2020. He was one of just three players to have 600-plus rushing yards and 400-plus receiving yards, putting him alongside fellow running backs Travis Etienne (Clemson) and Najee Harris (Alabama). - Manhattan Mercury

Chris Vaughn's day job took him to the Atlanta area this weekend. He's the Dallas Cowboys' southeast area scout and business duties called for him to attend the Tennessee-Georgia game. But Vaughn kept his eyes on the Kansas State-TCU game in Fort Worth. His son, Deuce (Christopher II), has become one of Kansas State's biggest playmakers early on this season. And the true freshman out of Round Rock Cedar Ridge made his presence felt in K-State's 21-14 victory over TCU, contributing 30% of the offensive yards. "Deuce was fired up and excited for the win," Chris told the Star-Telegram on Sunday. "He understands that even though there wasn't millions of yards in the game, that's a big win in that atmosphere against that team on the road. He grasps how big of a win it was for the team."

K-State started true freshman quarterback Will Howard with senior Skylar Thompson out with an injury. Howard held his own but, as stated, it wasn't an impressive day offensively for either team. K-State finished with 289 yards of total offense with Deuce contributing 88 yards (45 receiving, 43 rushing). Vaughn's lone reception went for 45 yards during a 91-yard TD drive by the Wildcats in the first half. Even though he didn't score, Vaughn has become known for his home-run ability and showcased it on that play. The 5-foot-5 Vaughn is a matchup problem for defenses. He entered the game having consecutive games with 70-plus yard receptions against Oklahoma and Texas Tech. "That was a good play when they needed it," Chris said. "Any explosive plays against that defense is huge. Coach [Gary] Patterson does a great job and that's a tremendous win for K-State." - Fort Worth Star

Henry Colombi threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns, Xavier White added 113 yards rushing and a score on 12 carries for Texas Tech, which lost its ninth game in 10 tries against the Wildcats. Colombi had one big mistake despite an efficient performance, throwing into double coverage on a drive deep in Wildcat territory which was intercepted by Jahron McPherson late in the fourth quarter. Both starting quarterbacks spent more time in the locker room than the field after suffering injuries in the first half.   Kansas State ranks last in the Big 12 in rushing offense, averaging 78.5 yards through two games. Even so, Wildcats freshman running backs Deuce Vaughn and Keyon Mozee played key roles in K-State's 38-35 upset last week at then-No. 3 Oklahoma. Vaughn broke a short pass reception for 77 yards, and Mozee lined up as a split receiver, was left uncovered and hauled in a pass for 78 yards. Both plays set up third-quarter touchdowns that helped Kansas State rally from 28-7 and 35-14 deficits. Then Vaughn went 38 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown that tied the score at 35, and kicker Blake Lynch made a decisive 50-yard field goal with 4:32 left. Vaughn is a 5-foot-5, 168-pound freshman from Round Rock Cedar Ridge. "He's dynamic in space. He's a play-maker," Tech coach Matt Wells said. "It doesn't matter what his size is. He plays big." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

The secret is out on Deuce Vaughn. After playing in just two games for Kansas State, the 5-foot-5 freshman running back has already entered the national spotlight as one of the country's best newcomers. Maybe he surprised Arkansas State and sneaked up on Oklahoma, but now that he has gained 245 all-purpose yards, scored a pair of touchdowns and earned a nickname (The Sand Blaster) from Fox announcer Gus Johnson, there's no chance Texas Tech will sleep on the Wildcats' top playmaker Saturday. "He is dynamic in space," Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said earlier this week. "He is a playmaker. It doesn't matter what his size is. He plays big. He is a very talented player and he made big plays against Oklahoma." Vaughn played so well in his first two college games that he rocketed to the top of K-State's scouting report this week. Wells made that abundantly clear when he was asked to break down what he saw from K-State's victory at Oklahoma. "They got (Vaughn) out in space," Wells said, "a couple times in empty (formations) and out of the backfield. They have got the two outside receivers and the two smaller tailbacks that are explosive and dynamic and can make you miss. That's what they did." - Kansas City Star

Another year, another stunner. Much to the chagrin of No. 3-ranked and heavily favored Oklahoma, the Kansas State Wildcats found a way again. A year after handing OU its only regular-season loss in Manhattan, the Wildcats took their show on the road Saturday with the same result, rallying from a 21-point second-half deficit for a 38-35 victory at Memorial Stadium. Senior kicker Blake Lynch, who missed two field goal attempts in a season-opening 35-31 upset loss at home to Arkansas State just two weeks earlier, drilled a 50-yarder to give the Wildcats their only lead of the game with 4 minutes, 32 seconds left. The defense took it from there, getting two straight stops, including senior safety Jahron McPherson's interception to seal it with 34 seconds on the clock. Senior quarterback Skylar Thompson and true freshman running back Deuce Vaughn led the offensive effort in the second half as K-State scored the game's last 24 points. Defensively, the Wildcats gave up 517 yards total offense, but forced four turnovers and got a blocked punt from AJ Parker that set up Vaughn's game-tying 38-yard touchdown run with 8:17 to go. - Topeka Capital Journal

Chris Klieman makes it clear to his younger players as soon as they arrive at Kansas State that there are two traits - above even raw physical ability - that will get them on the field faster than anything. Running back Deuce Vaughn and quarterback Will Howard, plus three other true freshmen, got the call last Saturday in the Wildcats' season opener at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in large part because they showed in a short time that they fit the bill. "The main product of that, as we've seen, is Deuce. He had a great game, some explosive plays, and he has some things that you can't teach. For him to come in, game one, as a true freshman and do the things he did, it just shows how mature he is, and how much he's really bought in and how much film he watched during the week."

Vaughn said after the game that attention to detail definitely fast-tracked his climb up the depth chart to the No. 2 spot behind senior Harry Trotter. "Without a doubt, just diving into the playbook as soon as I got it," Vaughn said. "I signed my letter of intent around December and I ended up getting the playbook and my iPad and stuff in February, so just right then I took it day-by-day, chunk-by-chunk, just went through and looked at everything and didn't get ahead of myself. "I looked at all the installments they had in 2019 (preseason) camp, and I knew if I did that I would give myself a great opportunity to be able to play early." Vaughn's first career carry went for 12 yards, and he had a 24-yarder on the same drive, then finished it off with a 3-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to put K-State up 14-7. "It is honestly surreal," Vaughn said of the touchdown. "Last night I went to bed dreaming about scoring my first touchdown in Bill Snyder Family Stadium and playing for the Wildcats. - Topeka Capital Journal

Deuce Vaughn may not yet be a household name among Kansas State football fans, but he certainly has caught linebacker Justin Hughes' attention. So much so that when Hughes and Elijah Sullivan, the Wildcats' other starting linebacker, spot him in the offensive huddle during practice they immediately sound the alarm. "When we see him in the backfield, I know me and Elijah talk to each other and say 'Deuce, Deuce, Deuce,' " Hughes said of Vaughn, a shifty 5-foot-5, 168-pound true freshman running back from Round Rock, Texas. "We point him out every time he's on the field because we know he's getting the ball or they're setting him up to get the ball, so we just try to contain him and let the (defensive) ends know he's in so they can keep contain and keep him in the box."

Hughes is not the only one to take notice of Vaughn, who found himself sharing the No. 2 running back spot with senior Tyler Burns when K-State released its two-deep Monday ahead of Saturday's 11 a.m. season opener against Arkansas State at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. "He's got a great skill set," head coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday during his game week virtual news conference. "He can catch the ball extremely well (and) he's got great vision. "He can run inside, he can run outside, and we're excited about seeing what he can do, as well as a number of younger players." - Topeka Capital Journal
