Lawrance Toafili, Florida State, Player News

In a season filled with its fair share of ups and downs, Florida State running back Lawrance Toafili emerged as a bright spot for the Seminoles in 2020. The true freshman became a legitimate threat with the ability to confound defenses as a rusher and a passing threat. "Lawrance is a really talented player," FSU coach Mike Norvell said. "Not only with what he does running the ball, but the ability to catch the ball no matter where he's aligned, whether it's releasing from the backfield or lining up in the slot. He's a matchup problem for defenses because of that versatility." The Seminoles used Toafili's athleticism in a variety of ways, lining him up at the wideout and slot positions and in the return game. But it was at tailback where Toafili saw most of his work, rushing for 356 yards and two touchdowns, including a career-high 117 yards against Duke in the regular-season finale. Five of his 37 runs went for 20-plus yards, including a career-long 49-yard run against Louisville Oct. 24. He was the second-leading receiver among the running backs with 12 catches for 120 yards. - Sun-Sentinel

The message for Florida State's running backs this fall has been a simple one: own the ball. "We always have to own the ball," FSU freshman Ja'Khi Douglas said. "In our meeting room, we all have a ball with us to make sure we're owning the ball." The Seminoles have most recently built a solid ground game, producing a 1,000-yard rusher during six of the past seven seasons, including last year when Cam Akers rushed for 1,144 yards. But a new coaching staff and a new offensive philosophy could provide more opportunities for the FSU backfield.

Four of the eight tailbacks arrived this year as part of FSU's 2020 recruiting class, led by four-star prospect Lawrance Toafili and three-star back La'Damian Webb. The group also includes a pair of multi-faceted players in Corey Wren and Douglas. "I tell you, Lawrance Toafili has been remarkable this last week," Norvell said after practice Monday. "You can tell he is gaining some confidence in what we're asking him to do. He's had explosive runs just about every day. He's done something good with the ball in his hands and now we're just continuing to help develop him on how to play without the ball in his hands." Added Sheffield about Toafili, "He's just young, but he's going to be the real deal." - Orlando Sentinel
