Nate Jones, a dynamic running back who did not practice during the University of New Mexico's spring football drills, has entered the transfer portal, he announced on Twitter Friday night. Jones, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound freshman, was second on the team last season with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries. Gonzales never specified why Jones was absent for the spring. Jones also would not comment on the reason. Gonzales only would say on Saturday that Jones did not meet "our expectations," just as he said in March. Jones showed explosiveness and great potential when he ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in a 39-33 loss at Hawaii on Nov. 7, which was his debut. He had sat out the week prior because he had been in close contact with a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 and was near the end of a 14-day quarantine. - Albuquerque Journal

There's a young face, rather a talented running back, missing from University of New Mexico spring football thus far. Nate Jones, an explosive runner who was second on the team last season with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries, is out at this time. UNM coach Danny Gonzales would not comment specifically on the reason for Jones being away from practices. "If you don't take care of yourself on and off the field, it doesn't matter; if you don't meet our expectations, you're not out here," Gonzales said after Wednesday's practice. "So, right now that's where he's at: he's not meeting our expectations." Jones, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound four-star recruit rated by ESPN, had a remarkable debut on Nov. 7 when he ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in a 39-33 loss at Hawaii. He had sat out the week prior because he had been in close contact with a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 and was near the end of a 14-day quarantine. - Albuquerque Journal

Bobby Cole ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns, Nathaniel Jones added two more rushing TDs, and New Mexico beat Fresno State 49-39 on Saturday night. Freshman walk-on Isaiah Chavez made his first start and had 196 yards passing and a score as well as 95 yards rushing and a TD on 15 carries for New Mexico (2-5 Mountain West Conference). The Lobos have won back-to-back games following a 14-game losing streak. New Mexico beat Wyoming 17-16 last Saturday, which also snapped a string of 20 consecutive conference losses.

Fresno State (3-3), which had won seven straight games against New Mexico dating to 1994, used a 16-play, 70-yard drive to open the second half and make it 31-21 when quarterback Jake Haener scrambled for a 3-yard touchdown with 6:53 left in the third quarter. Conner Kinslow had 49-yard touchdown catch - his first career reception - about two minutes later, and Jones and Cole had TD runs of 10 and 35 yards, respectively, on back-to-back offensive plays before Cole scored on a 9-yard run to make it 49-31 with 2:33 to play. Haener was harassed throughout but passed for 350 yards and three TDs for the Bulldogs. - New Mexico/AP College Football
