 Doug Emilien, Kansas, Player News

  07/28/22 - WR Doug EmilienrSr/2025, Kansas, 6-0, 190 (DS#999 WR) + More +

There are a handful of returning wide receivers, redshirt sophomore Lawrence Arnold likely first among them, who'll compete to take up Kwamie Lassiter II's role as the Jayhawks' leading option in that room. Junior Luke Grimm and redshirt junior Trevor Wilson, with Arnold, made up the second-through-fourth spots last year behind Lassiter when it came to production. Emilien, a transfer from Minnesota who was listed at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, joined the team with his own level of potential. Emilien didn't load up the stat sheet or play a significant amount at Minnesota, but he has spent two years developing at the college level. Emilien was ranked only a few spots lower in the 247Sports Composite rankings in the 2020 recruiting class when it came to the wide receiver position nationally, behind Arnold. Emilien was a three-star prospect coming out of high school and a three-star prospect as a transfer.

Junior quarterback Jalon Daniels didn't know much about Emilien prior to Emilien's commitment. But redshirt sophomore running back Ky Thomas, another transfer who's joined the Jayhawks from Minnesota, was able to shed some light on what Emilien could provide for Daniels. Daniels said Thomas told him that Emilien was an excellent route runner who'll put in the work. "I can say (Emilien)'s definitely come in and did that," said Daniels, who also highlighted Emilien's ability to get yards after the catch. "Everything that's been asked of him, he's accomplished. He's abiding by the standard and he's just going to keep on coming in every single day and working." - Topeka Capital Journal

The only thing Jalon Daniels knew upon Doug Emilien's decision to transfer from Minnesota to Kansas was that Ky Thomas used to be one of Emilien's roommates. The connection between the two figures to be much closer - and soon. Daniels, who is expected to begin the season as the Jayhawks' starting quarterback, is likely to benefit from the spring addition of Emilien, a speedy, 6-foot-1, 190-pound wide receiver.

So is Kansas, which faces plenty of uncertainty in the passing game after Kwamie Lassiter II, a sixth-year senior last season, moved on to the NFL. "Ky told me a lot about him coming in, told me that he was a beautiful route-runner, somebody that was going to come in and work with his head down no matter what the situation was," Daniels said last week at Big 12 football media days. "I can say he definitely came in and did that." A three-star prospect in the class of 2020 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Emilien played in just two games in his two seasons with the Golden Gophers. When Thomas, a running back who is from Topeka, decided to leave Minnesota for Kansas in January, Emilien chose to stick it out. It wasn't long before he made the same choice. "It was my decision, but he told me that we're trying to build something, and I want that," Emilien said in the spring. - Lawrence Journal World

  05/06/22 - WR Doug EmilienrSr/2025, Kansas, 6-0, 190 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Kansas' newest wide receiver, Doug Emilien, said Tuesday that he had decided to join the Jayhawks after transferring from Minnesota because of the relationships he had built with the coaching staff over the past month. Emilien committed to play for Kansas on Monday, his 21st birthday. He said his connections with head coach Lance Leipold and wide receivers coach Terrance Samuel played a large role in that decision.

But it was his relationship with running back Ky Thomas, a Topeka native who transferred to Kansas from Minnesota in January, that made the Jayhawks more appealing. Thomas was not just a former teammate but was Emilien's former roommate. "It was my decision, but he told me that we're trying to build something, and I want that," Emilien said. He called the ability to play with Thomas again "a blessing, for real, because we know what it's like to be at the bottom and we know what it's like to be humbled. We're coming out of the same situation." Emilien, who is 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, graduated from American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida, in 2020. Despite being one of Minnesota's top-rated recruits, he was also one of six players it added at the position that offseason. - Lawrence Journal World

The Kansas football team received a commitment Monday morning from former Minnesota wide receiver Douglas Emilien, whose addition will address what had been an emerging need. Emilien enrolled at Minnesota in 2020, redshirted his first season and appeared in just two games last season. He has four seasons of eligibility remaining because of the redshirt and the extra year granted by the NCAA to players at the start of the pandemic.

Three wide receivers have left Kansas in the last month - Kyler Pearson, Tristan Golightly and Majik Rector - and a fourth, Lawrence Arnold, had decided to leave before he was convinced to stay. Emilien, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, wrote on his social media platforms on April 12 that he had decided to transfer from Minnesota, and he took a recruiting visit to Kansas the weekend of April 23. A consensus three-star recruit in the Class of 2020, Emilien earned scholarship offers from nearly two dozen schools. - Lawrence Journal World
