  01/02/23 - WR *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU, 5-11, 195 (DS#15 WR) + More +

Kayshon Boutte was "going back and forth pretty much all year" as he mulled his future before announcing he would return to LSU and then declaring for the NFL draft instead, Kelly said Sunday. Boutte first said Dec. 5 he would come back for his senior season, but he changed his mind three weeks later. Kelly said the talented wide receiver received "clarity" on his draft grade. "For him, he needed to get all that information, and once he did, he made the best decision for him," Kelly said. "We support him 100 percent. We're excited for him, and he's ready. He'll have a great career."

Boutte would not have played in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Purdue. He did not travel with the team, sources said, and LSU announced he was "unavailable" hours before Boutte said he would instead turn pro. When asked Sunday, Kelly declined to say why Boutte was unavailable for the game even before he declared for the draft. LSU had specified in a statement Boutte was enrolled for the spring semester before he reversed course. "Unavailable means I can't speak to some of the reasons behind it, or I would have been more specific," Kelly said. "When we issue a statement using the word 'unavailable,' we can't get into some of the specifics." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  12/28/22 - WR *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU, 5-11, 195 (DS#15 WR) + More +

LSU receiver Kayshon Boutte has reconsidered his recent decision remain to remain with the Tigers in 2023 and will instead declare for the NFL draft. Boutte's announcement on a verified social media account Wednesday night came hours after coach Brian Kelly announced that Boutte wasn't available to play against Purdue in the Citrus Bowl on Monday, but was still enrolled for the spring semester. LSU confirmed that Boutte informed the Tigers he's leaving the team to turn pro. A social media post by Boutte in early December indicated that he intended to remain at LSU for the 2023 season.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Boutte caught 48 passes for 538 yards and two touchdowns this season, a relative down year for him as he returned from an ankle injury that sidelined him for about half of the previous season. But he stood out in 50-30 loss to No. 1 Georgia in the SEC Championship game, catching six passes for 107 yards and a TD. Boutte was having the makings of a big 2021 season before his injury, catching 38 passes for 509 yards and nine TDs in just six games. As a freshman in 2020, Boutte caught 45 passes for 735 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. - AP College Football

LSU receiver Kayshon Boutte is not available to play against Purdue in the Citrus Bowl on Monday, Tigers coach Brian Kelly said Wednesday.   12/07/22 - WR *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU, 5-11, 195 (DS#15 WR) + More +

LSU football wide receiver Kayshon Boutte is returning to LSU for his senior season, he announced on Twitter on Monday. Boutte, a projected first-round pick and an AP preseason first-team All-American to begin the year, has 48 catches for 538 yards and two touchdowns this season. "Let's lock in and focus on the main goal of any LSU Tiger: Winning a National Championship," Boutte wrote. Boutte's decision comes as a pleasant shock for LSU fans, after he admitted this preseason that he considered entering his name into the transfer portal last offseason following Brian Kelly's hiring. "It was all kind of weird, playing for people I've never really met," Boutte said in August. "I had never really met any of them personally, so I felt like I didn't fit."

He ultimately stayed, trusting the plan Kelly and his new staff had in place for him and the program. But his relationship with Kelly didn't get off to a great start, as the former Notre Dame coach "threw a shot across his bow" for not attending LSU's offseason workouts despite recovering from an ankle injury. "He's a great player. He's a good kid. But this has been a rough spot for him," Kelly said in March. "And what happens is you tend to get distracted because you're not involved in everything. But he's learning you got to be involved with everything whether you're injured or not." - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 19. Kayshon Boutte, Jr, WR, LSU, 6-0, 205, 1,...After a controversial season opener, Boutte got into a little more action in a 65-17 win over the Southern Jaguars with four catches for 42 yards. That's still less that we expect from this explosive receiver, although it was his 18th straight game with a catch. Previous week, No. 8: Whacked game ended with no time on clock as blocked PAT preserved Florida State's 24-23 victory. OK, this is about Boutte, whose contribution to this game was also whacked. At 3:58 left in third quarter his first contribution was to draw a pass interference that kept LSU's TD drive alive.

He finished with only two catches for 20 yards, had a couple of drops and seemed out of sync. He also spent an inordinate amount of time on the sidelines. Remember, flamboyant coach Brian Kelly called out Boutte a few weeks back, questioning his commitment. Last week Kelly said the receiver, ranked eighth overall at the time by NFL Draft Scout, "recommitted." Boutte was awarded LSU's coveted No. 7 jersey, ostensibly for the team's top player. In 16 career games through 2021 season, Boutte scored 14 touchdowns and had at least one reception in each, a streak that barely survived the opener. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 11. Kayshon Boutte, WR, LSU, Junior. Notable 2021 stats: 509 yards, 9 TDs. Last year's ranking: NR. A season-ending injury against Kentucky last October cut short a nine-game run dating to Boutte's freshman season in which he scored in every game and racked up 13 touchdowns. While there was concern early on that he wouldn't mesh with new coach Brian Kelly, the decision to award Boutte the ceremonial No. 7 jersey in July signifies what's expected of arguably the most talented player on the roster. - ESPN.com

Kayshon Boutte thought about leaving LSU. He really did. When rumors floated around about the possibility in December, the star wide receiver was wondering if he should transfer to another school. It never reached the point where Boutte entered the transfer portal, but consider the circumstances. Everything around him was changing while he recovered from the first major injury of his career. Different coaches. Different teammates. Different staff members. The people who convinced him to pick LSU in the first place were gone. Should he leave, too? "Coming out of high school, I felt like the people who recruited me was the people who had the most trust and belief in me," Boutte said. "I felt like being under a new staff, it was all kind of weird playing for people I never really met. I didn't really know any of them personally. I felt like I didn't fit."

Boutte wanted to know the people around him, and he barely recognized any of the faces in the building. Coming off a season-ending ankle injury in October, his professional future hinged on this junior season. He needed to trust the coaches responsible for developing him. "I thought about it," Boutte said. "I really did. There was a lot going on." Ultimately, Boutte stayed. He got more comfortable with head coach Brian Kelly. He decided he should "overcome this process." And it helped that local personal injury attorney Gordon McKernan signed him to a name, image and likeness deal. On Dec. 29, 2021, Boutte posted on Twitter: "Ignore the rumors...I'm locked in." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Everyone remembers when Kelly gave a mysterious answer challenging Kayshon Boutte at the beginning of spring practice. Even though Boutte was recovering from an ankle injury, Kelly wanted the star wide receiver to be more engaged. Kelly liked Boutte's response the rest of the spring, and he further affirmed Monday that Boutte made progress. When asked about building trust, he mentioned how the junior receiving the No. 7 jersey. "That has to happen when trust has been formed," Kelly said.

Boutte, who had two surgeries to repair his ankle, returned to offseason workouts "a couple weeks ago," sophomore wide receiver Jack Bech said. Bech said Boutte was in the training room and watched film throughout the spring.   LSU will play its season opener against Florida State this fall in primetime. Kickoff was set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC, the network announced Tuesday. The game takes place Sunday, Sept. 4, inside the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The game will be the first for LSU under new coach Brian Kelly as he tries to turn around the program. The Tigers are 11-12 since the last time they played in the Superdome during the 2019 national championship game. Florida State, which opens with Duquesne the week before, doesn't have a winning season since head coach Jimbo Fisher left in 2017. The Seminoles are 19-27 over the last four years. LSU and Florida State haven't played since 1991, when the then-No. 1 Seminoles won 26-17 in Tiger Stadium. LSU is 2-7 all-time against Florida State. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Boutte accumulated 308 yards receiving in LSU's 53-48 victory to set an SEC single-game mark. The record had been owned by Cobi Hamilton, who had 303 yards receiving for Arkansas in a 2012 loss to Rutgers. Boutte caught 14 passes and scored three touchdowns. - AP College Football

Freshman receiver Kayshon Boutte caught 14 passes for an LSU-record 308 yards receiving, and his third touchdown of the game on a 45-yard catch-and-run with 1:30 remaining lifted the Tigers to a 53-48 victory over Mississippi on Saturday. Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral quickly drove the Rebels into LSU territory in the final minute, but his sixth turnover of the game on a fumble caused by Ali Gaye ended the threat and allowed the Tigers (5-5) to avoid their first losing season since 1999.

Freshman LSU QB Max Johnson, who won his first career start in stunning fashion at Florida a week earlier, passed for 435 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson also scored on a 1-yard keeper in the fourth quarter. His lone interception appeared to be a costly one, coming in the end zone in the fourth quarter with the Tigers trailing 41-40. But the Tigers continued to press on through a chilly rain for about as memorable and eventful a comeback as relatively low-stakes game could provide. - AP College Football

Orgeron told reporters Tuesday morning that true freshman Kayshon Boutte is all but officially the team's third receiver. "I think that's locked in," Orgeron said. LSU football takes 'full-speed' approach to preseason tackling in coronavirus era, Ed Orgeron says It was the last true position battle on offense. Myles Brennan has long been the projected quarterback; Orgeron is once again committed to a running-back-by-committee until someone emerges; the offensive line rotation has not wavered since Harvard grad transfer Liam Shanahan moved to center in the summer; and no one was expected to challenge five-star tight end Arik Gilbert, last year's high school Gatorade National Player of the Year. The depth chart seemed stable at the start of August.

Then, star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase announced he was opting out of the 2020 season last week, and, suddenly, Boutte and a group of about five other receivers were pushing for a starting spot. In LSU's first practice without Chase, Orgeron said Boutte had his best performance. The day after, Orgeron mentioned unprovoked in his opening remarks that Boutte "had a great day." Speed, versatility and a history of explosive plays appear to have given Boutte the edge. He was a five-star prospect out of Westgate High, a 6-foot, 185-pound track sprinter who was the nation's No. 2 wide receiver of the 2020 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. - Baton Rouge Advocate
