Trey Benson, Florida State, Player News

  12/15/22 - RB Trey BensonrJr/2024, Florida State, 6-0, 216 (DS#2 RB) + More +

Florida State running back Trey Benson is coming off a breakout season, his first with the Seminoles after transferring in from Oregon. Benson and several teammates are set to return in 2023. "It shows the commitment to this team, this university, to their joy for what it is to be a Florida State Seminole," Norvell said about the returners. "They'll be able to come back, continue to get better and help this program grow to where we're ultimately trying to get to." Benson is coming off a breakout season, his first with the Seminoles after transferring from Oregon. The redshirt sophomore was a second-team All-ACC selection after leading them in rushing yards (965) and attempts (141).

His 6.8 yards per carry average is the highest among ACC tailbacks with at least 100 rushing attempts. "I still have a lot to learn," Benson said. "I'm just getting started. I can be way better than I was this past year." Benson led the conference in missed tackles forced (77) and was fourth in the league with 30 runs of 10-plus yards. When asked what he needs to work on, Benson points to blocking and trusting his speed. "That's one main thing because my longest run this year was only for 42 yards, so that it could have been longer," he said. - Orlando Sentinel

2022 ALL-ACC FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: RB - Trey Benson, Florida State, 137 votes,...Benson, from Greenville, Mississippi, has won four of the past five ACC Running Back of the Week awards. After 111 yards and a career-high three rushing touchdowns against Florida, Benson ended the regular season with 965 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, both Top 20 in FSU single-season history. He also caught 12 passes for 111 yards and returned a kick 93 yards for a touchdown, one of just four ACC players with a kick return touchdown this year and FSU's first since 2013.

Benson has started five straight games and been the league's top runner four times, including setting career highs against Georgia Tech (111 yards), Miami (128) and Syracuse (163) in consecutive weeks before adding 111 and three touchdowns against Florida. Benson's 163 rushing yards against the Orange were the most for an ACC player on the road this season, and he scored three touchdowns in a game twice - against Boston College (two rushing, one kickoff) and Florida (three rushing). Benson was the first player in ACC history to win three outright Running Back of the Week awards and he tied Pitt's Israel Abanikanda with four on the season. - Florida State Football

  08/20/21 - RB Trey BensonrJr/2024, Florida State, 6-0, 216 (DS#2 RB) + More +

Trey Benson remembers the day immediately. December 1st, the Tuesday practice before Oregon's game at Cal, the freshman running back suffered a season-ending knee injury. "Basically," Benson said. "I tore everything." Benson tore his anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, lateral meniscus, medial meniscus and another tendon. He missed spring practice and lost over 20 pounds following surgery because he couldn't workout his lower body and felt down in wake of the injury. Benson gained the weight back this summer and has been back on the field through the first week of fall camp and says he's 95% recovered and "should be back before Sept. 4" when the Ducks open the season against Fresno State.

"I'm way stronger upper body now," Benson said. "I'm probably one of the strongest; me and CJ (Verdell) are probably close upper-body wise. I got better mentally as well too...I used to be negative all the time. Now, positive is the key." With Verdell and Travis Dye atop Oregon's depth chart for a third straight season, the competition at running back is for a complementary or situational role. Cyrus Habibi-Likio did that the past few years but is now at Boise State. Sean Dollars showed he was a viable option to take over but an offseason knee injury will keep him out well into the season. - The Oregonian
