Hugh Freeze's arrival on the Plains brought loads of questions, and many of the on-the-field wonders came from one spot: the quarterback room. Would Auburn dip into the transfer portal for a quarterback? What does Freeze, a known quarterback guru, think of Robby Ashford? Is last year's Week One starter, TJ Finley, even still around? A little over two months later, Auburn wrapped up its first signing class under Freeze. It has seen the first of two transfer portal windows come and go. And still, a lot, i f not all, of the questions surrounding the position remain. Speaking to reporters Thursday, Freeze said he thinks he'll know lots more about his quarterback room after spring practices start Feb. 27. "Truthfully, when I watched the cut-ups that I've wat ched, man, it's hard," Freeze said of Auburn's quarterbacks. "It's hard for me to adequately judge quarterbacks if they're not afforded the opportunity to stand in the pocket and make reads and make different throws for a decent percentage of time. The s ample size for that is pretty small if they weren't under some type of duress, or maybe it was more of a move-the-pocket scheme. "So I'm anxious to get into spring and kind of see how they handle that, and then I'll go from there with what we do in the s econd portal window."Auburn head football coach Hugh Freeze previews spring practices, recaps signing day while speaking to the media Feb. 2. Freeze confirmed reports that the program entertained bringing in a quarterback during the first transfer portal window, which closed in late January. Coastal Carolina's Grayson McCall, North Carolina State's Devin Leary and Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders were all named that were tied to the Tigers. Although he didn't specify who was pursued, Freeze said he "never felt great" about many quarterbacks in the portal. "I was OK with that, honestly," Freeze said. It's a tradition unlike any other. Auburn announced the date for its 2023 A-Day spring game, and unsurprisingly, it coincides with the Saturday of the Masters Tournament. That has often been the case over the years, including last year, and it will again be the case this spring as the Tigers hold their annual spring game on April 8 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. This year's A-Day game will mark the culmination of the Tigers' first spring under new head coach Hugh Freeze, who was hired in late November and task ed with resurrecting a program that fell on hard time during a less-than-two-year tenure under Bryan Harsin.Freeze retooled the coaching staff, retaining only Cadillac Williams and Zac Etheridge as assistants, and has overhauled the roster with 17 incoming freshmen and a transfer haul featuring a dozen more players; the Tigers' recruiting class ranks 18th nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings, while its transfer class ranks fourth. Auburn will be allotted 15 practices dur ing the spring, and while an official start date has yet to be announced, the Tigers are likely to return to the field in early March. 2022 SEC ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM: QB Robby Ashford, Auburn,...A redshirt freshman who won the starting job early in the season after transferring from Oregon, Ashford passed for 1,613 yards and seven touchdowns while rushing 709 yards and seven touchdowns in 2 022. Ashford ranks third among freshmen in program history in all passing categories and sixth among Auburn all-time freshman rushers. Only Bo Jackson (9) has rushed for more touchdowns than Ashford as an Auburn freshman.Ashford threw for a season -high 337 yards and two touchdowns against LSU. He rushed for 108 yards and two scores vs. Mississippi State and concluded the season with 121 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns against Alabama, becoming the first Tiger since Carnell Williams to rush for two TDs in an Iron Bowl. "I knew I had to go out there and give my all and do whatever it took," Ashford said after the Iron Bowl. "Unfortunately it wasn't enough. This experience I'll always remember and cherish." When it comes to Auburn's quarterback competition, linebacker Wesley Steiner sees a lot of one former Auburn quarterback in Robby Ashford. "A lot like Bo Nix, Robby is a pain in the butt," Steiner said Tuesday. "I'm not gonna lie." Steiner - who's set to help fill the void left by former Auburn linebackers Zakoby McClain and Chandler Wooten - was asked about the Tigers' quarterback battle, and the comparison to Auburn's previous three-year starter was the first thing he mentioned. While working on the d efensive side, it's a frustrating thing to see Ashford scramble out during practices, Steiner said, as he's difficult to contain. "It's just like, 'OK, are we doing what we need to do so we can't keep these actual yards that we don't want them to have as a defense?' And that was one thing with Bo Nix is once he gets moving, it's hard to get an angle on him because you don't expect them to be so fast. "Robby to me, he moves just as quickly. I remember at one practice, I ran right by him and I felt the wi nd rush past my ears after I rushed by him. So, you know, he's fast."In three seasons at Auburn, Nix passed for 7,251 yards and 39 touchdowns, while also rushing for 859 yards and another 18 scores. After Nix entered the portal and committed to Or egon in December, Auburn and the Ducks theoretically swapped quarterbacks, as the Hoover native Ashford transferred to Auburn in January. In two seasons at Oregon, Ashford didn't see the football field, but he was a dual-sport athlete, roaming the outfie ld for the baseball program. Bryan Harsin has been pleased with Robby Ashford's progress since the spring, when he took home offensive MVP honors on A-Day, and it has the redshirt freshman in the thick of Auburn's quarterback competition early in fall camp. Ashford is one of four ca ndidates for the starting job at this point of the preseason, along with junior T.J. Finley, Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada and true freshman Holden Geriner. Ashford still has work to do to make his case for the starting role, but despite not having any in-game experience from his time at Oregon, he has impressed with how far he has come since arriving on campus in January - especially when it comes to his decision making with the ball in his hands, which Harsin noted has really stood out since the spr ing."(He's) definitely more assertive," tight end Luke Deal said. "I can tell that he's taken a lot of the load on his shoulders, whether it's good or bad, you can see that he's taking a lot of ownership, which is something you like to see, especi ally as offensive linemen or tight end. Usually, you kind of get used to just taking the blame because we don't mind. Nobody's looking at us as much as they're looking at QB, so that's pretty cool to see him just kind of taking a lead, taking that owners hip and assertiveness." Ashford also possesses a trait that makes him stand out compared to the other contenders in the quarterback room: He's a more mobile threat behind center, and he can really make defenses pay if he can get loose. As Deal put it Tue sday, Ashford has speed to spare - "He could afford to give me some if he wanted to" - and it's impossible to ignore on the field. "He's a force when he does it, so just decision making, right? If everybody's covered, he's going to have a chance to go ou t there and make a play with his feet," Harsin said. The former two-sport star from Mobile (Ala.) had a nice A-Day showing playing behind an iffy Tigers' offensive line, emerging as a potential X-factor in the battle with incumbent TJ Finley and fellow transfer Zach Calzada. Ashford is the best athlete in the room, and could totally win AU's job since the Tigers lack real explosiveness at the skill positions. How well Ashford continues to improve operating Harsin's offense will go a long way in determining where he sits in the Tigers' pecking order though. - On3.com

Bryan Harsin enters his second season as the Auburn football coach with a vital decision to make at the most critical position on his squad. TJ Finley, Texas A&M transfer Zac Calzada, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford, and freshman Holden Geriner are vying t o be the Tigers starting quarter when the season begins in less than four months with a game against Mercer at Jordan-Hare. Finley has the most experience at Auburn and took most of the first-team reps in the media viewing periods and during the first ha lf of the A-Day game. Ashford won the MVP of the spring game and showed elite speed with a nice arm. Robby Ashford is no longer playing baseball for Oregon in 2021. The Ducks freshman outfielder and quarterback is spending the remainder of the year focused solely on football. "Robby's chosen to devote himself to football since spring ball started and he 'll continue to do that," UO baseball coach Mark Wasikowski said. "I definitely think that I can see him back with our program in the future, like next year; I can see that for sure. But he's really kind of pushed everything in; he wants to win that seco nd quarterback spot with the football program and those are his wishes so we honor that for sure, pulling for him."Ashford hit .200 (7 for 35) with a .293 on-base percentage with six runs scored, two RBIs, five walks, 13 strikeouts and stole three bases on five attempts in 20 games with 10 starts this spring. He hadn't played for the Ducks since an April 6 midweek game against Portland, which coincided with Oregon football's second week of spring practice. Ashford was competing for the starting c enter field job to begin the season, but Anthony Hall has emerged as UO's every day center fielder and started 24 of the last 25 games.
