 Chris Jefferson, Purdue, Player News

  03/04/22 - SS Chris JeffersonrSr/2023, Purdue, 5-10, 206 (DS#76 SS) + More +

His first season at the FBS level brought plenty of lessons about life and football. "The biggest thing is resiliency and persistence," Jefferson said. "Coach English actually gave us a list of 15 things or 10 things about a great football player or a great person. Those two things were on there and that was the story for last year. Just coming along and slowly building, slowly bettering my role with the team." Jefferson didn't know what his role would be last season but has learned from that experience and is prepared to develop into a better leader on and off the field. "I don't like to lead until I'm comfortable in my abilities, but I'm always learning," Jefferson said. "For guys to look at me, I need to have my best game. Everyone can lead. I want to be a better leader." Jefferson finished with 36 tackles and one interception, numbers he believes will improve heading into his final season. But it goes beyond the statistics for Jefferson right now. "My mindset is the best I've been," Jefferson said. "Expectations are high - they're always high for me and that's pretty much nothing new. My confidence, and the way I think about things, is at an all-time high right now." - Journal and Courier

If Chris Jefferson didn't think he could play in the Big Ten, specifically at Purdue, he wouldn't have placed his name into the NCAA transfer portal during the summer. If Chris Jefferson didn't think he could make the jump from Findlay - an NCAA Division II program - to an FBS program he would've stayed in Ohio. If Purdue's coaches didn't like what they saw from Jefferson during a workout inside the Mollenkopf Athletic Center in June, Jeff Brohm never would've offered the All-American safety.

Jefferson is here now, a member of the program and is looking to play a big role in turning the defense around. One week into preseason practices tell Jefferson he made the right decision. "Oh yes. My confidence has grown a lot," Jefferson said. "When I came here it's like I deserved to be here, but I felt like I've got to prove it to these guys and especially to the team that I deserved to be here. "Now, I feel like I proved it to them so now my confidence is on the rise. They're telling me good job, so it's making me like, 'Man, I'm not just going to come on this level and be an average player.' I'm coming on this level and going to be a weapon for the team." The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Jefferson appeared in 26 career games at Findlay, collecting 12 interceptions and breaking up 10 passes. Jefferson was named to The Associated Press DII All-America first team and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in back-to-back seasons. - Journal and Courier

Just how motivated is Christopher Jefferson? Plenty. But it's all self-motivation since this is the path he's elected to travel, transferring to Purdue after spending three seasons at the University of Findlay (Ohio), a Division II program. The incoming safety announced his decision to transfer and join coach Jeff Brohm's program on Monday. He's scheduled to arrive in West Lafayette by Saturday, if not sooner. "I'm probably the most motivated I've been in my entire life," said Jefferson, who will have two years of eligibility with the Boilermakers "I'm probably my biggest critic. I probably fear failure more than anyone. "I'm not coming to Purdue to sit on the bench, I'm not coming to have the experience of playing in front of a large crowd. I'll come in with the same type of mentality as any other player, wanting to play, wanting to do good, wanting to create a legacy and build improvement for the program."

Free safety is the position Jefferson is currently earmarked for, but he also might see action at nickel and on special teams. He's coming to compete for a starting position, but the Boilermakers do return Cam Allen and Marvin Grant. Both, though, missed spring practice due to injuries. But the addition of Jefferson adds depth to a thin secondary. He brings solid credentials. Jefferson was named to The Associated Press DII All-America first team and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in back-to-back seasons. He appeared in 26 career games at Findlay, collecting 12 interceptions and breaking up 10 passes. In six games last season, Jefferson made 32 tackles. For his career, he totaled 110 tackles. - Journal and Courier

Purdue added short-term and long-term help in the recruiting department Monday. Monday night, Christopher Jefferson - a safety at Division II Findlay in Ohio - announced he's transferring to joining coach Jeff Brohm's program. Earlier Monday, the Boilermakers added their second commitment to the 2022 recruiting class in the last three days when Texas defensive lineman Nic Caraway announced his pledge. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Jefferson appeared in 26 career games at Findlay, collecting 12 interceptions and breaking up 10 passes. Jefferson was named to The Associated Press DII All-America team. In six games last season, Jefferson made32 tackles. For his career, he made 110 total tackles. Jefferson is the 10th player to transfer into Purdue's program, including junior college players and from the NCAA portal. - Journal and Courier
