  10/10/22 - RB Chez MellusirSr/2025, Wisconsin, 5-11, 212 (DS#28 RB) + More +

Wisconsin running back Chez Mellusi will miss an unspecified length of time after injuring his right wrist in the Badgers’ 42-7 victory over Northwestern. Mellusi has rushed for 223 yards and one touchdown on 56 carries this season, He also has two catches for 25 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown in the Northwestern game. Wisconsin announced Monday that Mellusi wouldn’t be available Saturday when the Badgers (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) visit Michigan State (2-4, 0-3). Badgers interim head coach Jim Leonhard said it was uncertain just how much time Mellusi would miss. This marks the second straight year that Mellusi has missed time with an injury. Mellusi, a Clemson transfer, rushed for 815 yards and five touchdowns on 173 carries in nine games with Wisconsin last year before a torn left anterior cruciate ligament knocked him out for the remainder of the season. - AP College Football

  08/11/22 - RB Chez MellusirSr/2025, Wisconsin, 5-11, 212 (DS#28 RB) + More +

Wisconsin's first day in full pads is set for Tuesday, the sixth practice of preseason camp. That means Paul Chryst and his staff should get a better feel for the team's personnel, particularly the linemen. The lack of full-contact work hasn't prevented Chryst from feeling optimistic about tailback Chez Mellusi, who missed the final four games last season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee. "The way I was thinking about it was: If he can just clear some hurdles each practice," Chryst said after practice Monday morning.

"He had one - it sounds simple - but in a team setting got a handoff and (got) through it. He got hit a little bit. That was good to see. "Then he had another one where he kind of got banged to the ground. And he got back up. You don't want to take it for granted. Those are hurdles that he's got to go through." Mellusi had one run Monday in which he cut hard and accelerated toward the sideline. The move appeared natural and he appeared comfortable after the play. "He has been able to get probably as much (work) you want him to get," Chryst said. "You want him to be in a situation where he is wanting more. You don't want to be coasting at the end of the week. "He has been getting good work, honestly a little bit more than I anticipated." - Journal Sentinel

  08/06/22 - RB Chez MellusirSr/2025, Wisconsin, 5-11, 212 (DS#28 RB) + More +

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst is determined to avoid overworking several key players who are returning to the practice field this week in camp. "We've got to be smart on volume initially," he said. Perhaps the No. 1 player to monitor is tailback Chez Mellusi, who suffered a torn anterior ligament in his left knee last season at Rutgers. "You'd be crazy to have Chez just go 100 miles an hour right away," Chryst said.

UW is scheduled to hold its first practice Wednesday and the workload of Mellusi and fellow tailback Isaac Guerendo will be worth monitoring. "I feel great," Mellusi said Tuesday during the team's annual media day. "I'm full-go. I'm not limited. "We're going to see how it progresses throughout camp. They're going to watch my load. But I'm in a good spot and I'm just excited to play football." Guerendo sounded the same optimistic chord. "I'm full-go, 100 percent for Day 1," he said. "The mentality I have built is whatever opportunities I get, just take advantage of those. If anybody knows, it is me, that opportunities can be taken away like that." Mellusi broke the 100-yard mark in four of the nine games he played last season and finished with 815 yards, an average of 4.7 yards per carry, and five touchdowns. - Journal Sentinel

  08/01/22 - RB Chez MellusirSr/2025, Wisconsin, 5-11, 212 (DS#28 RB) + More +

As Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst and his staff prepare for preseason camp, two critical questions about the team's running game remain unanswered: Will the Badgers be able to use multiple tailbacks to wear down opponents and keep the runners fresh? Or, will sophomore Braelon Allen be asked to handle and inordinate number of carries, as happened in the team's final four games last season? The ability of Chez Mellusi and Isaac Guerendo to return from season-ending injuries and the development of Julius Davis and Brady Schipper should provide the answers.

Davis believes Allen will have plenty of help in 2022. "We're going to be hard to stop, I think," he said. "There is a lot that we all bring to the table. We all push each other to be the best we can be, because we want to be the best running back room in the nation. "We're still going to be Wisconsin football. We're going to run it down your throat and then we're going to open it up and pass it. We're going to do our thing." Mellusi, Guerendo and Schipper were held out of spring ball so they could recover from injuries. Mellusi suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 6 at Rutgers. Guerendo's season ended when he suffered a broken foot in pregame warmups on Oct. 9 at Illinois. Both appeared to be moving well in a video taken during summer workouts but head coach Paul Chryst noted this week the staff will work them in gradually in camp. Mellusi was on pace for a 1,000-yard season when he went down. He finished with 815 yards, a 4.7-yard average and five touchdowns. - Journal Sentinel

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Chez Mellusi (Sr.), Wisconsin,...The Badgers have not seen running back Chez Mellusi (5-11, 210) at full speed since he transferred to Wisconsin last year after two seasons with Clemson. In 2021 he played early with a pulled hamstring but still started nine games until he was sidelined with an ACL injury in a win over Rutgers and missed the final 4 games ... He still finished with 815 rushing yards and 5 TDs on 173 carries (4.7 ypc.) ... also caught 7 passes for 66 yards ... had four 100-yard rushing efforts, including 3 over 140 yards ... career-high 149 rushing yards on 27 carries and a TD in win at Purdue ... had 145 yards on the ground and a score in win at Illinois ... 144 yards and a TD in win over Eastern Michigan. He says he is 100 percent for the 2022 season, so it should be interesting to watch the duo of Mellusi and Braelon Allen, who rushed for 1,268 yards in 2021 as a freshman. - Frank Cooney, Draft Scout

  10/10/21 - RB Chez MellusirSr/2025, Wisconsin, 5-11, 212 (DS#28 RB) + More +

Chez Mellusi ran for 145 yards and a touchdown and Wisconsin beat Illinois 24-0 on Saturday. Braelon Allen rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and John Chenal carried nine times for 38 yards and a touchdown for the Badgers. Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz was 10-of-19 passing for 100 yards with an interception. The Badgers (2-3, 1-2 Big Ten Conference) outgained Illinois 491-93 yards in total offense. Coming into the game, Wisconsin ranked third in the nation and led the Big Ten in total defense, allowing just 249 yards per game and allowing just 4.3 yards per play. Illinois (2-5, 1-3) had been showing progress in its running game. Something had to give. On Saturday, it was the Illinois running game. Chase Brown led all Illinois rushers with 35 yards on eight carries. Brown rushed for 257 yards against Charlotte last week and tied his career high with two rushing touchdowns. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

  09/12/21 - RB Chez MellusirSr/2025, Wisconsin, 5-11, 212 (DS#28 RB) + More +

Wisconsin tight end Jake Ferguson likes the direction that the Badgers' running backs are going. And, he thinks Chez Mellusi is similar to former Badgers backs. Mellusi ran for 144 yards and a touchdown as No. 18 Wisconsin routed Eastern Michigan 34-7 Saturday night. "Chez is just that new edition," Ferguson said. "He runs hard and reminds me of Garrett Groshek and Jonathan Taylor at the same time - kind of shaking off a couple tackles and getting some extra yards." Wisconsin (1-1, 0-1 Big Ten) piled up 352 rushing yards and also dominated on defense against Eastern Michigan (0-2), which had 92 total yards on offense. The Eagles had three first downs.

Wisconsin controlled time of possession for 40 minutes. "Offensively, we couldn't get any kind of breathing room," Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton said. "We couldn't get anything going offensively, so our defense was on the field forever." Mellusi, a Clemson transfer, became the first Wisconsin running back to record consecutive 100-yard rushing games in his first two contests since Corey Clement in 2013. The Badgers, typically known for their explosive running, also had breakout performances from Isaac Guerendo and Jalen Berger. Berger, who missed the opener, had 15 carries for 62 yards and one TD. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

  09/07/21 - RB Chez MellusirSr/2025, Wisconsin, 5-11, 212 (DS#28 RB) + More +

Wisconsin running back Chez Mellusi devoted his offseason to preparing for a greater workload than he'd ever experienced in two seasons at Clemson. Little did he know just how many more carries he'd end up getting with his new team. Mellusi had more rushing attempts in one game with the Badgers than he did in the entire 2020 season with the Tigers. In his Wisconsin debut, Mellusi ran for 121 yards on 31 carries and scored the Badgers' lone touchdown in a 16-10 loss to Penn State.

It was just the kind of responsibility Mellusi wanted. He transferred from an annual College Football Playoff contender in part because he was intrigued by Wisconsin's tradition of producing top running backs. "It kind of speaks for itself when it comes to the history, with the guys coming through here and the success they've had," Mellusi said. "That kind of drew me in. And being able to run the football a lot kind of gives you the opportunity to showcase your talent." The only Football Bowl Subdivision player with more carries last week was Central Florida's Isaiah Bowser, who ran 33 times for 172 yards in a 36-31 victory over Boise State. Mellusi's emergence has given a new look to No. 18 Wisconsin's ground attack heading into its Saturday night matchup with Eastern Michigan (1-0). - AP College Football

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst and his staff used the transfer portal judiciously after the 2020 season. UW added three players and it is possible two could contribute this season. The Badgers added tailback Chez Mellusi from Clemson, defensive end Isaac Townsend from Oregon and defensive end/outside linebacker Thomas Brunner from Northern Illinois. Mellusi, who averaged 6.3 yards per carry and 5.6 yards per carry, respectively, in his two seasons as a backup at Clemson, could vie for the starting job at UW.

"I think it is certainly something that you have to be aware of," Chryst said of the transfer portal, "(but) there is a bit of a fine line. You're not looking at someone unless you have availability, a scholarship position. "But then you have to ask whether this player is worth it or do you reward a walk-on? That is where you have to balance it. "Because the immediate eligibility, in my opinion, adds a whole other dimension. You have to know who it is you're getting and they have to know who it is they are joining." - Journal Sentinel

  06/03/21 - RB Chez MellusirSr/2025, Wisconsin, 5-11, 212 (DS#28 RB) + More +

The University of Wisconsin running backs room got a lift when former Clemson running back Chez Mellusi tweeted that he was transferring to the Badgers program. He'll have immediate eligibility in 2021 and have three years of eligibility remaining. The four-star prospect from Naples, Florida, played for two years at Clemson before jumping into the transfer portal. He was in Madison for an official visit Tuesday. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, Mellusi's arrival comes at a time when the Badgers don't have a clear depth chart at running back, particularly after a spring season when Jalen Berger, Isaac Guerendo and Julius Davis were significantly limited by injuries, giving junior Brady Schipper (four carries in 2020) the bulk of the spring work. Of the players who saw the most carries last year, Garrett Groshek (67 carries) has graduated and moved on, Nakia Watson (53 carries) has transferred to Washington State, and fullback Mason Stokke (19 carries) signed as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers. Assuming full health, Berger (60 carries as a freshman) would be the heavy favorite to open as UW's starter, but Mellusi could quickly become a top-two option. - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
