  2023 ALL-BIG SOUTH-OVC FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION FIRST TEAM: RB - Geno Hess, Gr., Southeast Missouri,...A native of Peoria, Illinois, Hess finished off his six-year career by becoming the first player in SEMO history to rush for 5,000 yards. The Redhawks all-time leading rusher, Hess ran for over 1,000 yards for the third-straight season. He carried the ball 186 times for 1,007 yards and 10 touchdowns and caught 28 passes for 220 yards in 11 starts this year. Hess went over 100 yards on six occasions and gained a season-high 179 yards in his final game as a Redhawk at Bryant (Nov. 18). Hess, a first-team selection for the fourth year in a row, racked up 5,119 yards and 63 touchdowns in 56 games during his career.   2022 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Geno Hess (RB), Southeast Missouri,...Hess was dominant on the ground, leading the FCS in total touchdowns (21) and rushing touchdowns (19), ranking second in yards per carry (7.62) and third in total rushing yards (1,569). His rushing touchdowns are the fourth-most in OVC history while his rushing total this season was the ninth-most. He accomplished all of that despite having only eight rushing yards in the season-opener at FBS foe Iowa State. Hess broke the OVC single-game rushing record with 317 yards on 26 carries against Murray State in the season finale; he is the only FCS player to break the 300-yard plateau in 2002.

He had two other games where he rushed for 200 yards and overall had six games with at least 100 rushing yards. Hess had four rushing touchdowns in two different games and tallied 10 total touchdowns over his final three regular season games, helping Southeast Missouri to its third OVC Championship. Hess now ranks third in OVC career history for rushing touchdowns (51) and ninth in career rushing yards (3,989), the third-most among active FCS players.   NOV 21 OVC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Geno Hess, RB, 5-8, 222, Sr., Peoria, Ill., Southeast Missouri,...Hess broke the OVC single-game rushing record by carrying the ball 26 times for 317 yards (12.2 ypc) and four touchdowns while also catching a pass for 10 yards as Southeast Missouri topped Murray State 52-22 to win its third OVC Championship. He broke the previous OVC record of 311 held by SEMO's Marquis Terry. Hess is the only FCS player to reach 300 rushing yards this season.

He had touchdown runs of 73, 43, 31 and 21 yards, increasing his season rushing touchdowns total to 19, which is tied for first nationally (and fourth in OVC single-season history. Hess now has 1,569 yards this season, third nationally and ninth in OVC single-season history. Hess increased his career rushing touchdowns mark to 51 (third in OVC history) and his career rushing total to 3,989 (ninth in OVC history).   Geno Hess ran for 317 yards and four touchdowns and Southeast Missouri State clinched a share of the Ohio Valley Conference championship Saturday by walloping Murray State, 52-22. The Redhawks (9-2) finished the regular season with a 5-0 record in conference, tied with UT Martin, which knocked off Eastern Illinois, 34-31 in its season finale. Southeast Missouri State claimed the conference's automatic berth into the FCS playoffs on a coin flip Saturday night. Hess broke the Southeast Missouri State and OVC records for most rushing yards in a single game. The Redhawks scored on a pick-6 on the third play of the game when William McCall picked off a Jayden Stinson pass and raced 49 yards to the end zone. Hess scored on a 73-yard run in the first quarter to take a 21-3 lead. Lucas Maue completed 2 of 4 passes for 87 yards, with both completions going for touchdowns.   Geno Hess scored three touchdowns, Southeast Missouri State allowed only 100 yards, and the Redhawks defeated Eastern Illinois 31-7 on Saturday to remain undefeated in the Ohio Valley Conference. Hess had 198 yards on 30 carries with touchdown runs of 31, 10 and 1 yards. The Redhawks had 320 yards rushing and Patrick Heitert threw for 140 yards, completing 11 of 17 passes. SE Missouri (8-2 overall) and UT Martin, which do not play each other this season, are tied for first place at 4-0.   Geno Hess ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns and Paxton DeLaurent threw for three more scores as Southeast Missouri State routed Northwestern State 51-16 in a nonconference game Saturday. Hess scored from 29 and 4 yards out in the first quarter as the Redhawks rolled to a 23-3 lead after one. DeLaurent hit Damoriea Vick and Johnny King with touchdown passes in the second quarter to put Southeast Missouri up 37-3 at intermission and added a 19-yard strike to Ryan Flournoy early in the third quarter to push the lead to 44-3.   Geno Hess rushed for 278 yards and four touchdowns and Southeast Missouri State rolled to a 49-28 victory over Lindenwood on Saturday. DC Pippin kicked two field goals to stake Southeast Missouri State (4-1), ranked 24th in the FCS coaches poll, to a 6-0 lead after one quarter in its Ohio Valley Conference opener. Hess' first touchdown came on a 15-yard second-quarter run, pushing the Redhawks' lead to 13-0. Paxton DeLaurent connected with Johnny King for a 21-yard touchdown and hit Damoriea Vick for the 2-point conversion and a 21-0 lead.

Hess, who did his damage on 24 carries, added a 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to pass Walter Smallwood's (1965-68) touchdown record with the 37th of his career. Hess finished off his day with scoring runs of 84 and 1 yard in the fourth quarter. Smallwood's record stood for 54 years. DeLaurent completed 19 of 33 passes for 312 yards. King had eight receptions for 126 yards. Cade Brister threw for 346 yards on 28-of-44 passing with three touchdowns for Lindenwood (2-2, 0-2). He also ran for 108 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.   Geno Hess ran for 107 yards and a touchdown, Shabari Davis returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and Southeast Missouri State celebrated homecoming with a 38-15 victory over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. Davis' 86-yard run with the second-half kickoff sparked a 31-point second half for the Redhawks (3-6, 3-1 Ohio Valley). After Kenny Doak added a field goal, CJ Ogbonna ran for a touchdown and threw for two more. Hess needed 101 yards to reach 1,000 for the season and finished the game with 1,006 yards.   SEPT 27 OVC CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Geno Hess, RB, 5-8, 209, Sr., Peoria, Ill., Southeast Missouri,...Hess carried the ball 25 times for a career-high 205 yards and three touchdowns as Southeast Missouri earned its first win of the season and opened OVC play by topping Tennessee State 47-14. The 205 yards are the third-most nationally this season. Hess, who averaged 8.2 yards per carry, scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and added a 63-yard score to open the third quarter and finished the day with an 8-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. It marked the first time a SEMO player had rushed for more than 200 yards since the 2018 season (Marquis Terry 202 vs. Dayton). Hess, a candidate for the Walter Payton Award, leads the OVC and ranks 12th nationally in rushing (100.2 yards/game). He also ranks fourth in rushing touchdowns (5) and total rushing yards (401), 24th in rushing yards/carry (5.65) and 33rd in all-purpose yards (116.25/game).   Geno Hess rushed for a career-high 205 yards with three touchdowns and Southeast Missouri defeated Tennessee State 47-14 on Saturday in an Ohio Valley Conference opener. Hess is the first Redhawks (1-3, 1-0) player to run for 200 yards since Marquis Rerry had 202 against Dayton in 2018. Hess, who had 25 carries, ran for a 63-yard score that gave the Redhawks a 23-0 lead early in the second half. Dayron Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a Tigers (1-3, 0-1) score but Kenny Doak kicked a 45-yard field goal and Hess ran in from 8 yards out for a 33-6 lead heading into the final quarter. Southeast Missouri rolled up 607 yards offense, 380 of it on the ground, to 266 for the Tigers, who rushed for only 14 yards and converted just one of 11 third downs. CJ Ogbonna threw for 227 yards with a touchdown to Will Weidemann and an interception for the Redhawks. Doak kicked four field goals.
