George Holani, Boise State, Player News

  01/14/23 - RB George HolanirSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 208 (DS#32 RB) + More +

Let's be honest - there are too many athletes across this planet who receive far too much attention. Here in Boise, there is the curious case of George Holani. He deserves more. The Boise State running back is cherished around here, all deserved, but it's not enough. This is an athlete who should be worshiped, though a man of faith like Holani would never endorse such praise for simply playing a game. Holani is more than a football player - and what he did with seven simple words on Jan. 1 is all the evidence you need: "NEW YEAR SAME TEAM! (praying emoji) #NOTDONEYET" Holani committed to Boise State 1,567 days ago, has cranked out 3,426 yards of offense and 27 touchdowns in four seasons, and now plans to return for the 2023 season when most of us thought he was done with college football.

Holani is a good football player who had a 50-50 shot of landing on an NFL roster this spring. He's a better teammate, person and inspiration to all of sports in the Treasure Valley, and his quiet announcement to return didn't get the attention it deserved. It was a holiday. We were distracted. Too many other college football headlines. It's basketball season. Holani is quiet. He's never been a dynamic media personality. Some fans are ready to move on with a new batch of promising young running backs at Boise State. Whatever the reason, Holani deserves to be celebrated more because college football is different these days, when the real drama of the sport begins after the regular season ends. There are thousands of misguided players in the transfer portal. There are hundreds of dreamers leaving college early to pursue the NFL. - Idaho Press

  01/04/23 - RB George HolanirSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 208 (DS#32 RB) + More +

The Boise State football team opened the new year with exciting news. Running back George Holani will return for another season. Holani, who just wrapped up the second 1,000-yard rushing season of his career, announced Sunday on Twitter that he will return for his redshirt senior season. He might have a future in the NFL, but he's putting that on hold.

Boise State fans got a glimpse of how dominant the Broncos' running game can be this season. Holani, quarterback Taylen Green and freshman running back Ashton Jeanty combined to post 316 rushing yards in back-to-back games against San Diego State and Fresno State. The Broncos ended the year ranked No. 2 in the Mountain West at 196.4 rushing yards a game. The Broncos' offense will be under the direction of new offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan, and he has plenty of pieces to work with. And the next few years could be exciting, especially with the College Football Playoff expanding in 2024. - Idaho Statesman

Ashton Jeanty added 73 yards rushing - including a 6-yard touchdown - on eight carries for Boise State (7-3, 6-0 Mountain West Conference). Green connected with Billy Bowens for a 31-yard touchdown about 2 minutes into the game and capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive with a 9-yard TD run that made it 14-0 with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. Holani broke multiple tackles on his way to a 49-yard scoring run early in the second and scored on a 9-yard run that made it 31-3 with 5:44 left in the third quarter. Toa Taua led Nevada (2-8, 0-6) with 103 yards rushing on 16 carries. The Wolf Pack has lost eight consecutive games. - Boise State/AP College Football

George Holani rushed for 157 yards and caught a touchdown pass, Ashton Jeanty rushed for 109 yards and a pair of scores, and Boise State defeated Fresno State 40-20 Saturday night. Boise State (4-2, 3-0 Mountain West) watched its ground game flourish for the second straight week since Dirk Koetter took over as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator. The Broncos, which rolled up 443 yards of total offense, finished with 316 yards rushing to match its ground output a week ago against San Diego State.

Fresno State (1-4, 0-1), still in search of a win over an FBS program this season, dropped its fourth straight game. The Bulldogs held a 14-13 lead late in the second quarter and later tied the game at 20 midway through the third. But Boise State’s defense clamped down as the Broncos’ offense exploded, scoring the game’s final 20 points to secure the win. Logan Fife was 14-of-23 passing for 134 yards with two interceptions for Fresno State. Jordan Mims led the Bulldogs’ ground attack with 61 yards on 21 carries. - Boise State/AP College Football

George Holani accounted for 157 yards of offense and two touchdowns, Hank Bachmeier threw for a pair of scores, and Boise State defeated UT Martin 30-7 on Saturday. Boise State (2-1) used a smothering defense to prop up its sputtering offense, holding UT Martin to 152 yards of total offense. Offensively it was Holani who did it all for Boise State. He caught four passes for 47 yards and a score, while rushing for 110 yards and a TD. UT Martin (1-2), which entered the game ranked 18th in the latest FCS coaches poll, showed some fight early, exiting the first quarter tied at 7. But the Skyhawks gained only 86 yards after their first three drives. Bachmeier, who left the game after a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter on a roughing the passer penalty, was 18 of 25 for 204 yards. Dresser Winn threw for 104 yards and a touchdown for UT Martin. - Boise State/AP College Football

The Broncos played their season opener without starting running back George Holani. Holani made the trip to Orlando and was on the field for warmups, but he had been limited in practice all week. "It was an injury. He just wasn't ready to go this week," Avalos said. "As much as we wanted him to play, he was not ready to go and we're not gonna jeopardize him for the season." Oregon transfer Cyrus Habibi-Likio got the start at running back, finishing with 12 carries for 23 yards. Senior Andrew Van Buren added 26 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, but the Broncos only collected 20 net rushing yards as a team. Holani missed much of last season after suffering a knee injury at Air Force, but he was healthy this spring and earned rave reviews from the coaches during fall camp. Avalos said he expects Holani to be ready to go next week against UTEP. - Idaho Statesman

Quarterback Chase Cord will miss spring practice for the third year in a row, Boise State football coach Andy Avalos confirmed Thursday morning. Avalos also said defensive lineman Demitri Washington will miss spring ball as he continues to recover from a leg injury suffered last October during the Broncos' win at Air Force. On the bright side, Avalos said running back George Holani is healthy and ready to go this spring. The sophomore played in just one full game last season - the opener against Utah State - before suffering a knee injury the following week at Air Force. Holani posted 1,014 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman in 2019. "He's really excited for spring ball, and we can't wait to see him get going again," Avalos said. - Idaho Statesman

Sophomore running back George Holani was playing in his first game for the Broncos since leaving with an injury against Air Force on Oct. 31. However, Holani left the field with 11:27 to go in the third quarter after appearing to re-injure his left knee, which was already in a brace. Holani had three carries for 3 yards, plus the game's first touchdown on a 4-yard pass from Hank Bachmieier on the Broncos' opening drive. Holani totaled four receptions for 19 yards. Holani spent time in the medical tent and was later offered a crutch by a trainer, but he refused it, according to the CBS Sports Network broadcast. His status for next week's Mountain West championship game is unknown. - Idaho Statesman

The Boise State football team may get some reinforcements in the backfield Saturday at Wyoming (4 p.m., CBSSN). On Wednesday, Broncos offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau said he expects sophomore running back George Holani to see his first game action since a road trip to Air Force on Oct. 31. "We'll get him on the field somehow," Kiesau told reporters. Holani suffered an apparent leg injury in the first half at Air Force, and junior Andrew Van Buren has carried the load ever since. Van Buren is coming off the first 100-yard rushing performance of his career after posting 113 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries on Nov. 21 at Hawaii. His seven rushing touchdowns are tied with Fresno State's Ronnie Rivers for the most in the Mountain West. Holani posted 100 rushing yards and a touchdown in his only full action this season in the opener against Utah State. Last fall, he finished with 1,014 yards, helping the Broncos extend their streak of seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher to 11 straight. - Idaho Statesman

Jaylon Henderson threw for 187 yards and three scores in his second start as Boise State (10-1, 7-0 Mountain West) clinched a share of first place in the Mountain Division and a berth in its third consecutive conference title game.
