Cornerback Benjamin St-Juste accepted an invitation Friday to play in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 30 in Mobile, Ala. St-Juste, who turned pro Dec. 20 after the Wisconsin loss, had one year of eligibility remaining at Minnesota. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Canadian's inclusion is more important this year, with the NFL's scouting combine not having in-person workouts this spring due to COVID-19. The lack of a combine will put more emphasis for aspiring pros - including junior receiver Rashod Bateman - to show out during pro days on college campus this spring. St-Juste is the 43rd Gopher to be invited to the combine, following Carter Coughlin and Kamal Martin last year. - Pioneer Press

The Gophers had their first announced player departure come within moments of the program opting out of a 2020 bowl game. Cornerback Benjamin St-Juste declared for the NFL Draft on Sunday morning, but fellow corner Coney Durr made a surprise decision to return for the 2021 college season. This means Minnesota will only lose one of its two starting cornerbacks going into next season. "Thank you Minnesota," St-Juste wrote in a message on Twitter.

"I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to represent The University of Minnesota," "Thank you Coach (P.J.) Fleck for giving me a chance to reach my dreams on and off the field. "Thank you to every single coach and staff member that pushed me to become a better player and man. Huge Thank you to the state of Minnesota and Gopher fans for the incredible memories. Last but not least, thank you to my teammates that I now call brothers for life!" At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, St-Juste had 14 tackles and three pass breakups in five games this season. He missed two with a case of COVID-19. The Montreal native, who transferred from Michigan, was all-Big Ten honorable mention for Minnesota in 2019 with 45 tackles and a tied for a team high with 10 pass breakups. - Pioneer Press

A group of more than 1,000 Big Ten athletes took to The Players' Tribune on Wednesday to call for more protection playing amid the coronavirus pandemic. Gophers cornerback Benjamin St-Juste played a big role in this, as one of the founders of the group that penned the open letter, College Athlete Unity (CAU). "We have started a dialogue in good faith with the Big Ten and hope that the NCAA will follow suit," the article read. "Given the short time frame, and with our season at stake, this conversation must happen now." This came just hours after the Big Ten released its revised 10-game, conference-only football schedule and updated testing protocols, which require a minimum of two tests per week, one within three days of competition, for all high-risk sports. - Minneapolis Star Tribune
