 Ladarius Skelton, Southern, Player News


  Ladarius Skelton passed for a touchdown and ran for another, Chase Foster scored on a 14-yard interception return and Southern held on to beat Alabama State 24-21 on Friday night in the opener for both teams in a season delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Skelton was 10-of-22 passing for 135 yards and had 72 yards rushing. On a play-action pass, Skelton hit a wide-open Gregory Perkins who raced 40 more yards for a 59-yard score to make it 21-all on the second play of the fourth quarter. Alabama State then went three-and-out and Cesar Barajas made a 41-yard field goal to cap the scoring with 12:29 to play. The Hornets missed a 44-yard field-goal attempt with four seconds left. Ryan Nettles was 16-of-27 passing for 149 yards and two touchdowns the Hornets. He threw one interception and was sacked six times. It was the first matchup between the teams since the Jaguars beat Alabama State 64-6 in 2016. - Southern/AP College Football

  Ladarius Skelton passed for two touchdowns and Southern blocked a field goal with 5 seconds left to clinch the Southwest Athletic Conference West Division title with a 30-28 win over Grambling in the Bayou Classic on Saturday. mThe Jaguars (8-4, 6-1) travel to Alcorn State for the conference championship next Saturday. Alcorn State beat Southern 37-28 in last year's championship game. Jarod Sims scored on a 36-yard TD run to give Southern a 30-28 lead with 14:11 left in the game. The PAT was blocked, which gave Grambling a chance to go ahead with a field goal in the final seconds. But Miguel Mendez's 40-yard attempt was blocked. The Tigers (6-5, 4-3) led 21-3 in the second quarter. Southern closed the deficit to 21-17 before halftime and took the lead at 24-21 late in the third quarter.   Ladarius Skelton ran for three touchdowns and threw for another score, and Southern held off Jackson State for a 40-34 victory on Saturday. Southern (7-4, 5-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) has won six of its last seven games while Jackson State (4-7, 3-3) has lost its last two games following a three-game win streak. Skelton completed 12 of 23 passes for 133 yards that included a 6-yard TD pass to Hunter Register. Skelton added 182 yards rushing on 21 carries.

Jalon Jones threw for 224 yards and four touchdown passes and had 131 yards rushing to lead Jackson State. Keshawn Harper ran for 214 yards on 22 carries. Jackson State led 24-17 at halftime, but a safety and Skelton's 22-yard scoring run gave Southern a 26-24 lead. Zach Gleaton kicked a 25-yard field goal for Jackson State, but Southern returned the ensuing kickoff into the endzone for a 33-27 lead. Skelton's touchdown pass to Hunter Register with 5:54 left in the first quarter gave Southern (6-4) a 21-0 lead. He threw a game-winning 2-yard TD pass with 28 sacks remaining and was 16 of 25 for 198 yards and two scores. He also racked up 238 rushing yards and two TDs on 34 carries. It was the 10th-most rushing yards by an FCS quarterback in the decade.

  Ladarius Skelton accounted for four touchdowns, including a 2-yard pass to Hunter Register with 28 seconds to play, and Southern beat Alabama A&M 35-31 on Saturday night. Skelton was 16-of-25 passing for a season-best 198 yards and two touchdowns and added 34 carries for 238 yards -- both career highs -- and two more scores. Register finished with seven receptions for 95 yards and two TDs for Southern (5-4, 4-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference), which has won four of its last five games. Alabama A&M's Aqeel Glass hit Zabrian Moore for a 28-yard touchdown that capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive and, after the Jaguars went three-and-out, Corey Spencer made a 44-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs (5-4, 2-2) their first lead of the game at 31-28 with 4:20 to play. Kendric Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to near midfield before Skelton took the reins, leading Southern on an 11-play, 55-yard drive. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior ran for 30 yards -- including a 12-yard scamper on a fourth-and-2 -- and hit Register for a 20-yard gain on third-and-11 before connecting again with Register for the winner.   Ladarius Skelton scored on a 6-yard run after Southern blocked a punt and Devon Benn added a late TD run to help the Jaguars hold off Prairie View A&M 34-28 on Saturday night. The Jaguars (3-3, 2-0 Southwest Athletic Conference) beat the Panthers (2-4, 1-1) for a fourth straight time. Southern took a 14-7 lead into halftime, but Prairie View's Jaylen Harris picked off a Skelton pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to pull the Panthers even at 14-all in the third quarter. Southern regained the lead on Cesar Barajas' 44-yard field goal and then stretched its advantage to 31-21 on Skelton's TD run following the blocked punt. The Panthers got within three points on Tony Mullins' 5-yard TD run, but Skelton led a long drive that was capped by a Barajas field goal to wrap up the win for the Jaguars. - AP College Football

  Christopher Chaney rushed for 107 yards, quarterback Ladarius Skelton scored three touchdowns on the ground and Southern defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 31-7 on Saturday night. Southern ran for 269 yards and the Jaguars' defense allowed just a 13-yard rushing touchdown by Omar Allen in the second quarter. The Golden Lions (3-2, 1-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) had averaged 47.3 points in a three-game winning streak. The Jaguars (2-3, 1-0) scored two touchdowns late in the first quarter. After Allen's touchdown for Pine Bluff cut the lead to 14-7 at halftime, Skelton added rushing touchdowns of 19 yards and five yards in the second half.
