Georgia has not faced a quarterback this season like TCU's Max Duggan, whom the Bulldogs will try to contain in Monday's College Football Playoff Championship game at SoFi Stadium. "He's unique," Georgia co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann said Saturday. Schumann started rattling off Duggan's video game-like stats: more than 500 yards on designed runs and more than 150 on scrambles. Because yards lost on sacks are subtracted from a quarterback's rushing totals in college football, Duggan officially has rushed 127 times for 461 yards and eight touchdowns. While his legs are good, his arm is even better. He's passed for 3,546 yards and 32 touchdowns, with only six interceptions.

Though Georgia has faced Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, another Heisman Trophy finalist, and talented signal-callers such as Spencer Rattler, Anthony Richardson, Hendon Hooker, Jayden Daniels and Will Levis, Duggan stands alone. "There's a reason he's a Heisman finalist, right?" Schumann said. The Bulldogs haven't done well in their past two games facing skilled quarterbacks. Stroud almost single-handedly led the Buckeyes to an upset Dec. 31 in the Peach Bowl CFP semifinal with his passing and running. Had wide receiver Marvin Harrison not left the game near the end of the third quarter because of concussion protocols, Georgia's players and coaches may not have been sitting in a chilly L.A. Convention Center on Saturday answering questions about Duggan. Georgia co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp said 14 of Ohio State's 41 points came from scramble plays when Georgia didn't do well enough rushing the quarterback or covering the receivers downfield. "We have not done a great job with that," he said. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Max Duggan accounted for four touchdowns, TCU returned two interceptions for scores and the third-ranked Horned Frogs withstood a frenetic second-half surge by No. 2 Michigan to win the Fiesta Bowl 51-45 on Saturday night and advance to the College Football Playoff national championship. TCU (13-1), the most unlikely team ever reach the four-team playoff in its nine-year history, has one more game left in its improbable season and it will come against either No. 1 Georgia or No. 4 Ohio State on Jan. 9 at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Coming off a losing 2021 season and picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 in Sonny Dykes' first year as coach, the Horned Frogs will try to win the program's first national championship since 1938. Duggan and the Frogs will no doubt be underdogs - again. That didn't matter much against Michigan (13-1) as they took it to the big, bad Big Ten champions and turned the Fiesta Bowl into circa-2010, Big 12-style scorefest. It was the highest scoring Fiesta Bowl ever and the second-highest scoring CFP game behind Georgia’s 54-48 Rose Bowl victory against Oklahoma on Jan. 1, 2018. Maybe it was fitting.

TCU, the little private school from Forth Worth, Texas, that was left out of the Big 12 when it first formed in the mid-1990s, became the first team from the conference to win a CFP game and will be the first to play for a national title since Texas in 2009. This one was 34-16 with 2:46 left in the third quarter and the Hypnotoads, a nickname borrowed for the animated TV show “Futurama,” and their purple-clad fans could sense their wild ride wasn't over. Of course, nothing has come easy for these Frogs all year. During their unbeaten regular season, they won seven straight games by 10 points or fewer. What followed was five touchdown drives - with a TCU turnover tucked in between - each taking less than a minute. Duggan threw for 225 yards and two interceptions and ran for 57. Johnston had six catches for 163 yards and Emari Demercado, picking up the slack for an injured Kendre Miller, ran for 150. All of that against a defense that ranked third in the nation coming in. - TCU/AP College Football

TCU quarterback Max Duggan acknowledged on Tuesday that his decision to enter the 2023 NFL Draft on Sunday was hard, but he felt it was the right one for him. "I thought about it for awhile," Duggan said. "I talked to all the coaches, my family and a lot of other people. I didn't really have a dog in the fight." It's understandable for Duggan to have been so torn, considering how proudly he has talked about his love and affection for TCU and Fort Worth as a whole.

But as he continued to think on the decision, he couldn't deny his dream of making it to the NFL. "It was a tough decision, it was hard, it was not easy," Duggan said. "But I just thought it was something I always wanted to do, something I was ready for and it just kind of time." Duggan had the option of running it back another year under Sonny Dykes and improve his draft stock even more, but ultimately he made the right decision. After seizing the moment to become the starting quarterback after an injury to Chandler Morris in the season opener, Duggan pushed himself up draft boards with one of the best individual seasons in TCU history. Duggan was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy and won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback. He was also the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. - Fort Worth Star

TCU quarterback and Heisman Trophy runner-up Max Duggan will skip his available extra season with the third-ranked Horned Frogs and make himself eligible for the NFL draft after the College Football Playoff. Duggan has started 41 games during his four seasons at TCU, though the senior could have returned for another season because all players were granted an extra year of eligibility after the 2020 season was altered by the pandemic. When announcing his decision on social media that he was declaring for the NFL draft, Duggan wrote, "But first, we still have business to take care of." The Frogs (12-1), who play Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal on Dec. 31, were undefeated until their overtime loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game. Duggan has thrown for 3,321 yards with 30 touchdowns and four interceptions this season, and also has 404 yards rushing with six more scores. He finished second in the Heisman voting behind Caleb Williams.

Duggan lost his starting job going into the season, but took over in the second half of the opener after Chandler Morris injured his knee. In his post Sunday, Duggan said being a student-athlete at TCU has been the greatest experience of his life, helping him develop as a football player and a man while earning a business degree. The Iowa native also thanked his family, teammate, coaches and fans for their support. "My experience at TCU and, in turn, Amon G. Carter Stadium, has been filled with great memories, passion and pride," Duggan wrote. "I have learned many lessons through the highs and the lows. I've built lifelong relationships that will last forever." - AP College Football

TCU quarterback Max Duggan has already collected a few significant awards after leading the Horned Frogs to a 12-0 regular season. Duggan was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the 2022 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner on Wednesday. He's also a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award (nation's top quarterback) and the Walter Camp Player of the Year award. All major accomplishments, but many are wondering if Duggan will be a finalist for the most coveted award of them all; the Heisman Trophy. Horned Frogs fans won't have to wait much longer to find out if Duggan will get an invite to New York City for the trophy presentation on Dec. 10. A big performance by Duggan against No. 10 Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday would certainly help his case. - Fort Worth Star

Griffin Kell kicked a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the game, and fourth-ranked TCU beat Baylor 29-28 on Saturday, scoring nine points in the final 2:07 to avoid another potential playoff-busting loss on the banks of the Brazos River. Emari Demercardo scored on a 3-yard TD run with 2:07 left to get the Frogs (11-0, 8-0 Big 12, No. 4 CFP) within 28-26, but he was unable to pull in a pass on the 2-point conversion attempt. After kicking deep, TCU used all three of its timeouts while forcing a three-and-out, and got the ball back with 1:34 left at its 31. Max Duggan converted one third down with a 12-yard scramble, and after Demarcardo's third-down run to the Baylor 23, the field goal unit scrambled onto the field with the clock running. The kick by Kell, who earlier had an extra-point attempt clank off the upright, went through as time ran out.

TCU, which had already clinched a spot in the Big 12 championship game, hasn't been undefeated this deep in a season since 2010, when it finished 13-0 with a Rose Bowl victory and No. 2 national ranking. When the Frogs played at McLane Stadium for the first time in 2014, after the facility first opened, they lost 61-58. That was their only loss that season, and they went on to share the Big 12 title with Baylor. They were the first two teams left out of the inaugural four-team College Football Playoff. Baylor (6-5, 4-4) was coming off a 31-3 home loss to Kansas State a week earlier, but last year's Big 12 champions took a 28-20 lead after a pair of true freshmen scored TDs early in the fourth quarter: tight end Kelsey Johnson's 12-yard catch, and Richard Reese's 1-yard run. - TCU/AP College Football

Max Duggan threw three touchdown passes, Kendre Miller ran for 120 yards and a score and No. 7 TCU used big plays on offense to beat West Virginia 41-31 Saturday to remain unbeaten. The Horned Frogs (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) didn’t need a comeback from a double-digit deficit like they did in their two previous games. Duggan staked TCU to a 28-21 halftime lead and that held up. But West Virginia (3-5, 1-4), which was coming off a season-low 282 yards of offense in a lopsided loss at last week at Texas Tech, gave the Horned Frogs a fight. JT Daniels threw a 23-yard TD pass to Reese Smith with 4:12 left to cut the Mountaineers' deficit to 34-31. TCU recovered the ensuing onside kick, but Duggan was intercepted by Malachi Ruffin at the West Virginia 16, giving the Mountaineers another chance. West Virginia was forced to punt, and Duggan found Savion Williams with a 29-yard scoring toss on fourth down with 20 seconds left. Duggan finished 16 of 28 for 341 yards.

TCU had four plays of at least 50 yards, with three going for touchdowns. After combining for 637 yards of offense before halftime, both teams squandered several second-half touchdown chances from inside the opponent's 20. The Mountaineers recovered a muffed punt at the TCU 17 early in the third quarter, but settled for a field goal. On its next possession, West Virginia drove to the TCU 4, but Daniels threw incomplete into the end zone on fourth down. TCU then drove 95 yards to the West Virginia 1. Quentin Johnston was tackled for an 11-yard loss on third down, resulting in a short field goal for a 31-24 lead. West Virginia mistakes contributed to TCU's first three touchdowns. Duggan took advantage of blown coverage in the secondary, throwing TD tosses of 71 yards to Taye Barber and 55 yards to Johnston. Midway through the second quarter, Daniels was hit going back to pass and fumbled. TCU recovered at its 49 and Miller scored untouched on the next play for a 21-14 lead. Miller now has a rushing TD in nine straight games. - TCU/AP College Football

Max Duggan threw for 280 yards with three touchdowns and Kendre Miller ran for 153 yards and two scores as eighth-ranked TCU again rallied from a big early deficit to stay undefeated, beating No. 17 Kansas State 38-28 on Saturday night to take over sole possession of first place in the Big 12 Conference. Duggan's 55-yard strike to Quentin Johnston late in the third quarter put the Horned Frogs (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) ahead to stay. That was their third consecutive drive to finish in the end zone. The Frogs, with new coach Sonny Dykes, have won four consecutive games over ranked opponents. Three in a row was already a first in school history, which they accomplished a week earlier at home by overcoming a 17-point deficit to beat then-No. 8 Oklahoma State in double overtime.

Kansas State (5-2, 3-1) had jumped out to a 28-10 lead when Will Howard threw for two touchdowns and ran for another after taking over for banged-up quarterback Adrian Martinez on its second drive. Deuce Vaughn's 47-yard run for his first touchdown in five games capped the fourth consecutive TD drive for the K-State. Howard ran for 14 yards on his first play and completed his first seven passes for 156 yards. He finished 13 of 20 for 225 yards, leaving the game briefly after hurting his shoulder on a running play late in the third quarter. Freshman Jake Rubley, the third K-State QB in the game, threw an interception on his first pass that came after TCU had gone ahead to stay. Miller scored on a 2-yard run on fourth-and-1 on the opening drive of the second half to get TCU within 28-24. After Kansas State missed a field goal attempt, the Frogs needed only four plays before Duggan's long TD to Johnston. Rubley was stopped short on fourth-and-1 early in the fourth quarter, setting up a drive that ended with a 9-yard scoring run by Miller. TCU led 7-0 after a 65-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Derius Davis on its first drive. - TCU/AP College Football

BIG 12 FOOTBALL CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Max Duggan, TCU, QB, Sr.,...Duggan rallied No. 13 TCU from a 17-point deficit to a 43-40 double OT win over No. 8 Oklahoma State to keep the Horned Frogs undefeated at 6-0. The senior QB totaled 343 yards of offense and three touchdowns. He was 23 of 40 through the air with two scores and rushed 11 times for 57 yards and a TD. TCU trailed by 14 in the fourth quarter before Duggan led a 94-yard scoring drive that tied the game with less than two minutes to play. His one-yard scoring run moved him past Andy Dalton (22, 2007-10) and into a tie with Kenneth Davis (1982-85) for eighth in TCU history.   TCU had a 10-3 advantage against Kansas heading into halftime and kept that lead in a high-scoring second half as the Horned Frogs beat the Jayhawks, 38-31.   Max Duggan passed for three touchdowns in the second half, including the game-winning 24-yarder to Quinten Johnston with 1:36 left, and No. 17 TCU beat 19th-ranked Kansas 38-31 on Saturday. The Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) are out to their best start since 2017 after winning the matchup of surprise unbeatens. Duggan was 23 of 33 for 308 yards and outdueled Kansas backup quarterback Jason Bean in a wild second half. Jalon Daniels, who led the Jayhawks to five straight wins for their best start since 2009, suffered an apparent injury to his right (throwing) shoulder late in the first half. Bean, who started the first 10 games last season, was 16 of 24 for 262 yards and he became the first Kansas quarterback to throw for four touchdowns in a half since Todd Reesling in 2008. Johnston's 206 yards on 14 catches were the most by a TCU receiver since 2016. After combining for just 13 points in the first half, the teams combined for 42 in the third quarter.

What was expected to be an offensive shootout was anything but early. The Horned Frogs settled for a field goal, turned over the ball on downs and punted on their first three possession while the Jayhawks punted twice and failed to convert a fourth-and-5 on their third series. The Jayhawks (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) appeared headed for the go-ahead touchdown in the middle of the second quarter when Daniels fumbled near the goal line. The Horned Frogs went 99 yards in six plays, with Kendre Miller's 1-yard run making it 10-0. Kansas got its first points on Jacob Borcila's 40-yard field goal one play after Daniels was hurt. Bean threw touchdown passes of 12 yards to Tanaka Scott and 8 yards Luke Grimm to put the Jayhawks up 17-10. Duggan found Derius Davis on a 51-yard touchdown pass to tie it, and after Jamoi Hodge picked off Bean at the Kansas 26, TCU regained the lead on a 3-yard run by Duggan. Bean's 38-yard TD pass to Quinton Skinner tied it, but Duggan's 25-yarder to Taye Barber put the Horned Frogs up again. Bean then hit Skinner with a 29-yard TD pass to tie it 31-all with 4:21 left in the game. - TCU/AP College Football

Max Duggan ran 67 yards for one of two touchdowns and threw for three scores, leading TCU to a 55-24 rout of No. 18 Oklahoma on Saturday in a second consecutive loss for new Sooners coach Brent Venables. OU quarterback Dillon Gabriel was knocked out of the game in the second quarter when he was hit while sliding by TCU linebacker Jamoi Hodge, who was ejected for targeting. Players had to be separated after Hodge's hit while Gabriel stayed down for several minutes, surrounded by the medical staff, before the UCF transfer walked off the field on his own. Pittsburgh transfer Davis Beville replaced him. There was an even longer delay in the fourth quarter when Oklahoma defensive back Damond Harmon was carted off after being immobilized on a stretcher when he was injured in the fourth quarter.

Harmon flashed a thumbs-up as he was put on the cart in an emotional scene that included linebacker Kelvin Gilliam, a childhood friend and high school teammate, appearing to fight back tears. When Lincoln Riley shocked the Sooners by leaving for Southern California, they hired their former defensive coordinator after Venables won two national titles in that role at Clemson. His defense was no match for Duggan and company as Oklahoma lost consecutive regular-season games for just the second time since 1999. The Sooners (3-2, 0-2 Big 12) opened conference with a home loss to Kansas State. It's the most points Oklahoma has allowed since a 63-28 loss to LSU in the 2019 national semifinals. The Horned Frogs (4-0, 1-0) had four touchdowns of at least 62 yards, topped by Taye Barber's 73-yard catch during a 27-point first quarter. TCU led 41-17 at halftime with 479 yards while finishing with 668 yards in coach Sonny Dykes' Big 12 debut after four seasons at crosstown rival SMU. - TCU/AP College Football

Max Duggan completed 22 of 29 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns and Emari Demercado ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns in TCU's 42-34 win over SMU on Saturday as coach Sonny Dykes' Frogs won the Iron Skillet rivalry game against the program that he coached the previous four seasons. Dykes' return to the SMU campus, coaching a longtime backyard rival, led to a crowd of 35,569 - the largest for a regular-season game in 23-year-old Ford Stadium and the school's first sellout since 2015. What was naturally seen by SMU fans as a disappointing departure, led to an exchange of words back and forth during the offseason. Mustangs receiver Rashee Rice, who went into Saturday's game ranked first in FBS receiving yardage per game (163.7) and second in catches (9.3), posted soon after Dykes' move that "No one comes to Texas to Fort Worth". "I'm glad this is over," said Dykes, who faced a similar situation last year taking SMU to Louisiana Tech, where he coached from 2010-12. "I'm hopeful now we can go on and I coach my team and not have to deal with some this stuff you have to deal with." Duggan threw 18 yards to Savion Williams in the first quarter, 8 yards to Jared Wiley in the second period and 80 yards on a shuffle-pass jet sweep to Derius Davis to give the Frogs (3-0) a 28-7 lead.

Demercado scored from 1-yard out on a drive that began at TCU's 37 following an interception by Josh Newton to put the Frogs ahead 35-21 midway through the fourth. With SMU within eight points in the closing minutes, Demercado burst through the middle and raced 63 yards for another score with 2:31 to play. Tre Siggers rushed for three short touchdowns for SMU (2-2), including a 2-yarder with 5:14 left to get within 35-27 but a two-point pass failed. SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Jake Bailey with 1:04 left to cap the scoring. Mordecai passed for 372 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, and Rashee Rice caught six passes for 74 yards. SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said Mordecai and Rice both played hurt throughout the second half. - TCU/AP College Football

When it comes to the looming quarterback competition, TCU head coach Sonny Dykes has a clear vision for what he wants from the winner. "I always thought that playing quarterback is like playing point guard. You're distributing the ball to other guys and your job is to make them look really good. The guy that makes everybody look the best is typically the best player," said Dykes, the first-year coach who opens camp next week. There are currently five quarterbacks on the roster with Max Duggan and Chandler Morris expected to be the primary contenders for the job. All of them, including redshirt freshman Sam Jackson, will be starting with a clean slate as Dykes searches for his field general. "I'm not concerned at all with the politics of any of it. I don't care who the starting quarterback was in the past, I don't care who was the highest-rated guy is, I don't care who has the highest ceiling," Dykes said. "I don't care about any of that, I care about who gives us the best chance to win." There many factors Dykes will consider in that regard like ball security and decision-making.

However, the most important might be confidence. "Tom Brady is Tom Brady because he can walk in the huddle and everybody in the huddle believes this guy is going to figure out a way to help us to win this ball game. That's what you're looking for, a guy that commands everybody's respect. Somebody that everybody believes in," Dykes said. Whoever emerges as the winner will be in the line to be the latest quarterback to thrive under Dykes. His track record is well known as he coached No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff and fellow NFL quarterback Davis Webb at California. - Fort Worth Star

Quentin Johnston caught two of Max Duggan's three TD passes, with the go-ahead score coming on a nifty catch-and-run as TCU beat California 34-32 on Saturday to remain undefeated against Pac-12 teams under coach Gary Patterson. Johnston put the Horned Frogs (2-0) ahead to stay with the 45-yard TD catch with 9:53 left, when he twisted around one defender who fell down near the 30 and then shed the attempted tackle by another inside the 10. Johnston finished with five catches for 95 yards. "I think I speak for the whole team when I say this ... we were very excited when he caught it," said running back Zach Evans. "I try to make that my main threat, getting yards after catch, just a lot of people think I'm 6-4, just a tall lanky receiver, getting the ball and go straight down," Johnston said. "But I try to prove that I can do more than that." Evans ran for 183 yards on 22 carries, with a 51-yard TD just before halftime for the Horned Frogs (2-0).

Duggan completed 17 of 31 passes for 234 yards and added 71 yards rushing on 19 carries with a 9-yard keeper for a TD with 5:47 left for a 34-26 lead. Chase Garbers threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns for Cal (0-2). He had 235 yards passing in the first half, with 199 of that coming on only four plays (49, 54, 28 and 68 yards). After starting 0-3 in their pandemic-shorted 1-3 season last year, the Bears have 0-2 starts in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1994 and 1995. "Ultimately as a defense, we didn't play well enough to win," Cal coach Justin Wilcox said. "We're a few plays away from playing pretty good football." Cal led 19-7 after Garbers threw a 7-yard TD to Nikko Remigio. That was a play after a 68-yard catch by Trevon Clark, whose only other catch was a 54-yard TD. - Texas Christian/AP College Football

Max Duggan threw for a touchdown and was one of four TCU players with a rushing score as the Horned Frogs routed lower-division Duquesne 45-3 in an opener shortened in the second half Saturday night. The coaches agreed to play 12-minute quarters after halftime with the Horned Frogs leading 35-0 in their first meeting with the FCS school. TCU improved to 19-2 in home openers under coach Gary Patterson. "We're really, really thin in our depth," Duquesne coach Jerry Schmitt said. "I was personally concerned because at our level, our backup guys are walk-on Division III-type players. To put some of them in to protect some of the skill guys... I appreciate Gary doing that." It was TCU's first non-conference game since 2019 after COVID-19 issues scrapped the only game outside Big 12 play last season along with a bowl appearance.

Duggan, who didn't play in the second half, finished a 90-yard drive on the opening possession with an 8-yard run. His 16-yard pass to J.D. Spielman finished the first-half scoring. The junior and third-year starter was 14 of 19 for 207 yards. "It was good for us to get started fast and stay on them," Duggan said. "We didn't want to play sloppy and make errors. Obviously my mistake of the interception, I've got to get that fixed. Other than that, it was a good half." - TCU/AP College Football

Just about 12 months ago, Max Duggan was facing the possibility that the season and maybe his career was over. It started with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis and ended with a heart procedure, Duggan recounted recently. Now he's preparing for his third season as TCU's starting quarterback. "It was crazy," Duggan said, recalling the positive COVID test in 2020. "When they started doing all these heart treatments, they found out I had this heart abnormality and it had nothing to do with COVID. I've had it since I was a baby. "That was the thing. I had to go through a heart procedure. I didn't know if I would play football again and started asking more questions."

He called his parents, Jim and Deb Duggan in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It was an athletic family. His father had been a college quarterback and successful high school coach. His mother had been a standout college hurdler. They told their son it was about doing what was best for him and staying healthy and not putting his life at risk. And he and his parents talked to doctors about the effect of the condition, for now and for essentially the rest of his life. "I had no idea what to think," Duggan said. "My first thought was is this is going to affect my present in football. Is it going to affect me when I'm 50 years old and I can't do anything? It was scary at first thought." - Dallas Morning News

TCU football isn't going to have a quarterback controversy this offseason. As far as who's starting at least. We've already written at-length about the Chandler Morris situation with Oklahoma and its coach Lincoln Riley. But Max Duggan is QB1 for TCU. He's the unquestioned leader as coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday. "He's fantastic," Patterson said. "He is the leader over there. He and the offensive line have a great relationship and that's another key ingredient you look at with how they get along. They have a great relationship. He lives with a couple of them and that always helps with everything." What remains unknown is the strides Duggan has taken in the passing game.

Accuracy issues were apparent throughout his true freshman season in 2019 when he completed just 53.4% of his passes. Duggan improved in 2020, completing 60.8% of his passes, but was limited much of the spring and fall due to a previously unknown heart condition discovered through advanced COVID-19 tests. Duggan finished the season completing 146 of 240 passes for 1,795 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also had 526 yards rushing and 10 TDs. Patterson said he felt Duggan threw the "deep ball" well in the fall, but reiterated his longtime stance that quarterbacks are judged on Saturdays. "It depends on the day, like any quarterback," Patterson said. "At the end of the day, you only get evaluated by the success of it." - Fort Worth Star

Junior Max Duggan has put together two impressive seasons at TCU. Taking over as QB1 his freshman year and continuing his leadership on the team in 2020 as a sophomore, Duggan has the potential to take the next step during his junior year. The thing that is intriguing about Duggan is not only his ability to see the field, but his legs. He is fast and doesn't let defenders pull him down easily. He led the team in rushing yards (713 gained, 526 net) and the next closest to him was Darwin Barlow with 444 (428 net). We could see some serious improvement from Duggan too with former TCU quarterback Kenny Hill moving into the role of quarterbacks coach. - Dallas Morning News

TCU quarterback Max Duggan threw a go-ahead, 71-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter and ran for two more scores as the Horned Frogs held off No. 19 Oklahoma State 29-22 on Saturday. Duggan threw for 265 yards and ran for 104 to lead the Horned Frogs (5-4, 5-4 Big 12). Derius Davis caught the long TD pass in stride near the 25 with 7:56 left to give the Horned Frogs the lead. They stayed in front when Trevon Moehrig made a one-handed interception of a deflected pass in the end zone, and TCU had a fourth-down stop with 2:18 left after its own turnover. Oklahoma State (6-3, 5-3), with a makeup game remaining at Baylor, wasn't necessarily eliminated from making the Big 12 championship game in two weeks, but would need a lot of help to get there.

The Cowboys were trying to respond with a tying touchdown when Spencer Sanders' high pass deflected off the hands of 6-foot-7 Jelani Woods, and was grabbed by Moehrig in the back of the end zone. Duggan then fumbled when Amen Ogbongbemiga stripped the ball from him at the TCU 26. But Sanders was under extreme pressure and threw an incompletion on fourth down. Oklahoma State still had another shot after TCU failed to get a first down to run out the clock, but Sanders' desperation pass on the final play of the game fell incomplete in a crowd near the goal line. Tylan Wallace, the Oklahoma State senior playing in his hometown, had a 55-yard TD catch at the end of the third quarter to put the Cowboys up 22-21. He finished with seven catches for 92 yards. Sanders finished 16-of-31 passing for 248 yards. - TCU/AP College Football

TCU coach Gary Patterson doesn't know how you can properly evaluate a football program this year. The coronavirus pandemic has made it near impossible to draw substantive conclusions. At TCU, for instance, starting quarterback Max Duggan missed most of fall camp after being diagnosed with a heart condition that required surgery. That came on the heels of spring football being disrupted by COVID. How much more would have Duggan developed with a full spring and fall camp going into his sophomore season? Maybe he'd have similar numbers - 124 of 201 passing for 1,370 yards with eight TDs and three interceptions - but maybe not.

"You just take him as one example of all the time that he missed where he couldn't be out on the field," Patterson said. "He couldn't lift, he couldn't run. He couldn't do anything because of the heart situation. So you just take that one example. Where would he be right now if he had spring ball and he had all those practices during fall camp and went through all of it? I mean, I don't think there's any way...I don't know how you do it." As Patterson said, Duggan is just one example. TCU has plenty more, starting with Patterson's coaching staff. - Fort Worth Star

Max Duggan threw three touchdown passes while running 58 yards for another score, TCU piled up 337 yards rushing in all, and the Horned Frogs bludgeoned their way to a 59-23 victory over winless Kansas on Saturday night. Zach Evans ran for 100 yards on 12 carries, and Darwin Barlow added 83 yards rushing and a score, as the Horned Frogs (4-4, 4-4 Big 12) easily bounced back from a lopsided loss to West Virginia in which they failed to reach the end zone. TCU had no such trouble in this one.

Duggan threw two TD passes to Pro Wells and another to Carter Ware, and Derius Davis returned a punt for a score, as coach Gary Patterson's crew raced to a 38-12 halftime lead. They settled into a ground-and-pound approach from there, and a pick-six from C.J. Caesar II and fumble recovery for a score by Dee Winters put an exclamation mark on the win. The Jayhawks (0-8, 0-7) tried errant and unsuccessful Jalon Daniels and Thomas MacVittie before giving Miles Kendrick a shot at quarterback. The third-stringer provided a spark, completing 11 of 18 passes for 166 yards with two TD passes to freshman Luke Grimm, who'd had just nine catches without a score all season. Still, he hardly overcame a defense that allowed at least 52 points for the fourth straight game. - TCU/AP College Football

Max Duggan and TCU went to the ground when they weren't able to do much through the air against Texas Tech. Duggan ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns, including a game-clinching 81-yarder late as the Horned Frogs snapped a five-game home losing streak with a 34-18 win Saturday. "They were not going to let us throw the ball very well, and so we had to be able to run it. So we took what they gave us," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "We did enough to win."

Duggan, who finished 11-of-23 passing for 73 yards with an interception, had a 3-yard keeper for a score in the first half. He sprinted 48 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the third quarter, then had the 81-yarder on his 19th and final carry with 1:42 left. "When a quarterback outruns the secondary, you know you have a guy that's very athletic," Patterson said. "I wasn't throwing the ball great, and I need to be better on that," Duggan said. "But, you know, the O-line receivers, everybody, stepped up being able to run the ball and being able to attack them that way." The Frogs (3-3, 3-3 Big 12) hadn't won at home since beating Texas on Oct. 26, 2019, and had lost their first three games at Amon G. Carter Stadium this season. The win also snapped a five-game streak in the series against Texas Tech (2-5, 1-5) in which the visiting team had won each time. - AP College Football

Max Duggan wasn't going to let TCU blow a 30-point lead at Baylor on Saturday. The sophomore quarterback came through when it mattered most to preserve a 33-23 victory over the Bears in Waco. Duggan rushed for two first downs on the final drive, which allowed the Horned Frogs to run out the final 6 minutes, 24 seconds. Duggan deflected credit on the final drive to his teammates afterward. "That had a lot to do with our offensive line and our running backs. Our tight ends too," Duggan said of his first-down runs. "That was just middle drill that we work on every single day. I think it showed a lot that they've been working really really hard. "On the last drive, the running backs hit the hole hard, tight ends did great, receivers on the outside. It was everybody. It was a good last drive for us."

That drive mattered more than any stat line as far as winning or losing. Duggan carried his team to victory on a day he had less than 200 yards of total offense (138 passing yards, 25 rushing yards). Early in what became the last drive, Duggan rushed for 13 yards on a second-and-1 from the Baylor 48. Three plays later, with TCU facing a third-and-7 with more than 3 minutes, 30 seconds remaining, Duggan rushed for 10 yards and another first down. TCU needed one more first down after that to run out the clock and got it on a 7-yard run by Emari Demercado on a fourth-and-1 play from the Baylor 13. Duggan finished with 25 yards rushing on nine carries for the game, but those two carries for 23 yards on the final drive were pivotal. "Max did a good job," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "I was proud of the offense on the last drive. You've got to get the ball and don't give it back to them. That's how you close a ball game. You don't give it back." - Fort Worth Star

Asked about Duggan becoming a "star" in the Big 12, coach Gary Patterson said: "I don't know. He's really improved from last year on touch passes. A year ago, I used to say he needed before the ballgame to throw 10 really hard balls against a wall and get all the hard balls out of his system. Here in the first few games, he's had a couple touch passes for touchdowns that he's thrown that have been really good. He's just a true sophomore.   Max Duggan doesn't crumble under pressure. With a young and developing offensive line, last week proved tough for the Frogs to stop the Cyclones from getting to the TCU quarterbacks. Both the offensive line and Duggan showed improvement today against the rush. When the pocket was collapsing, Duggan didn't hesitate to make a play. His running ability has made him a true threat.   Taye Barber called it an Aaron Rodgers play. That's exactly what TCU needed and quarterback Max Duggan delivered. Duggan checked into a QB draw at the perfect time - late in the game after Texas had taken its first lead and TCU had to respond - and proceeded to sprint 26 yards through the heart of Texas' defense and into the end zone. That score proved to be the difference in TCU's 33-31 victory over No. 9 Texas on Saturday afternoon at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. "I saw him check the play and thought, 'You go do what you do Max,'" Barber said. "That's an Aaron Rodgers play. That's his favorite quarterback, so that's what I told him."

Said Duggan: "In that formation, we knew that check would've been good for us. We had a call in that formation and I saw an opening and I did a check and had room for it. We were just really excited to take the lead." TCU is now 7-2 against Texas since joining the Big 12 in 2012. This is a series that started back in 1897 with UT going 13-0-1 in the first 14 games. The Frogs won only seven games in the 41 meetings between the schools from 1956-2007. Saturday also marked the first time an unranked TCU team knocked off a top-10 team on the road since 2011 at Boise State. - Fort Worth Star

TCU quarterback Max Duggan ran for the go-ahead score with 4 minutes left and the Horned Frogs' defense made it stand with a goal-line fumble recovery to stun No. 9 Texas 33-31 Saturday in a game that had 26 penalties and ended when TCU took a safety as time ran out. Texas looked primed for its second straight fourth-quarter comeback when Sam Ehlinger connected on a 52-yard pass to Keontay Ingram to put the Longohorns in scoring position. But Ingram fumbled on the TCU 1-yard-line with 2:32 to play. Darwin Barlow ran 9 yards to pick up a big first down for the Horned Frogs. Duggan then took a deep snap all the way to the back of the end zone to run out the final 6 seconds.

TCU (1-1, 1-1 Big 12) is now 7-2 against Texas since joining the Big 12 in 2012. The Texas loss delivers another blow to the Big 12's College Football Playoff hopes. The Longhorns (2-1, 1-1) and Oklahoma, who were the league's highest ranked teams, have now dropped early home games to unranked opponents. Duggan made his first start of the season after missing much of training camp while treating a previously undiagnosed heart condition. He passed for 231 yards and ran for 79 more and scored twice. His late 26-yard TD run caught the Texas defense by surprise as he had a clear path to the end zone. Ehlinger threw four touchdown passes on an otherwise difficult day for him. Ehlinger was just 17 of 36. - TCU/AP College Football

TCU would've preferred to keep Max Duggan on the sidelines the entire game Saturday, coach Gary Patterson revealed on Monday. Duggan had a limited number of practice reps going into the game after being diagnosed with a heart condition that sidelined him for an extended time during training camp. He only returned to practice two weeks ago. That's why Patterson and the offensive coaching staff didn't play Duggan earlier in the season-opening 37-34 loss to Iowa State. Several fans questioned the decision as Duggan had a better day statistically than starter Matthew Downing. "Max had been out almost a month and a half," Patterson said on the Big 12 teleconference Monday.

"People need to understand the procedure he went through and what he had to do. In fact, on the final drive his hands were cramping up even playing a half to play at the level you have to play. "It wasn't a plan. We thought if Matthew Downing did good, we'd protect Max Duggan for one more ball game. He gets back to where he was - he'd be in full strength and condition to be able to play a full ball game. We made the decision at halftime to at least give him two series to see how it turned out. It turned out well, so he stayed in the ball game." Patterson reiterated his belief that injuries shouldn't be the reason players lose their position. "All indications are that'll be the way we do it [with Duggan starting]," Patterson said. - Oakland Tribune

TCU likes to have options. Last season, Duggan was known for his running ability, which was not discovered until the middle of the season. Duggan showed Saturday that he still has the ability to run despite being out for a big chunk of the preseason due to a heart condition. He ran the ball 10 times during the second half. He also showed his ability to put the ball right in the pocket for the receivers. He went 16-19 in the passing game for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns. The quarterbacks were not the only ones in the game that were a threat in multiple aspects. Both Taye Barber and Emari Demercado had significant plays in positions they are not used to playing. Barber had 3 runs for 11 yards and Demercado had 5 receptions for 42 yards. - Dallas Morning News

Max Duggan has been cleared to practice and is available to play when TCU opens its season against Iowa State on Saturday. Coach Gary Patterson provided the news during the Big 12 football coaches teleconference on Monday. That does not necessarily mean Duggan will start, though, as Patterson said Matthew Downing has been getting the majority of reps with the first-team. Third-stinger Stephon Brown also has a package in the offense. "Like I said last week, I thought we'd be at full-go. Max has been back for almost two weeks," Patterson said. "Downing is here...Stephon...we have all three." Patterson stopped short of declaring a starter. "I don't know who's going to start," he said. "Downing has been the guy since we've gone. He's slung the ball really well. Right now, we have three quarterbacks. All of them have a part of the package in the game plan and we'll go forward with it." Duggan had been sidelined much of training camp with a lifelong heart condition discovered through enhanced COVID-19 testing protocols. His medical condition was announced in mid-August and his return had no definitive timetable on it given the uncertainty surrounding his diagnosis. - Fort Worth Star

TCU quarterback Max Duggan isn't sulking about a recent diagnosis that has sidelined him indefinitely. Instead, Duggan is focused on recovering and returning to the football field as soon as possible, his father Jim Duggan told the Star-Telegram on Sunday. "Max is obviously disappointed by the recent developments," Jim Duggan said. "But he's also the kind of kid who has been raised not to feel sorry for himself. He's staying positive. I'm sure when he's given the green light, he'll probably snap his chin strap a little tighter and go to work with a major chip on his shoulder."

Jim Duggan went on to say doctors discovered a heart abnormality on his son during an evaluation with an EKG (electrocardiogram). As TCU coach Gary Patterson said in announcing the news late last week, Jim Duggan reiterated that Max has likely had this condition his entire life and it was not COVID-19 related. "He's been treated for it and is now in the recovery phase," Jim said. "It just went undetected. We're glad that it was found and we had the opportunity to correct it." - Fort Worth Star

TCU faces uncertainty at the quarterback position with the season opener against SMU just over three weeks away. Projected starter Max Duggan is sidelined with an undisclosed health condition, coach Gary Patterson said on a conference call with team beat reporters Thursday night. Duggan has not practiced much during fall camp and it doesn't sound promising for him to return soon. Duggan has had the undisclosed condition his entire life, Patterson said, but it wasn't discovered until recently with TCU ramping up its testing protocols amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"Because of all the things we had in place, Max has a condition that he's had his whole life and we caught it," Patterson said. "Right now he's in a good place and hopefully he'll be getting back some time during the season. "Right now we'll be going forward with the rest of the quarterbacks. It's a thing he was born with and I'm just glad we found it; I can say that." Patterson didn't venture into a possible timeline for Duggan's return. "I don't know, I'm not the doctor," he said. Duggan played in all 12 games last season, starting the final 10. He finished by going 181 for 339 passing for 2,077 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 555 yards and six TDs. - Fort Worth Star

TCU coach Gary Patterson isn't worried about what NFL analysts thought about quarterback Max Duggan or the offensive struggles last season. The Horned Frogs' offense has been scrutinized in recent weeks as professional teams evaluated receiver Jalen Reagor. Reagor's limited production was written off by some NFL teams based on Duggan's play. "[Reagor] played with possibly one of the worst college football quarterbacks I've ever seen in my life," an NFC coordinator told NFL.com. Said another coordinator in the same report: "The Reagor kid is interesting because his quarterback play was so atrocious."

Patterson was aware of the criticisms during the NFL Draft last week, recalling: "I heard Kirk Herbstreit say that [Duggan] was terrible and the offense was terrible. It's easy to say that." The criticism is fair to an extent. TCU had the Big 12's second-worst pass offense and worst pass efficiency rating. Duggan completed only 53.4% of his passes, throwing for 2,077 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. On the flip side, Duggan was only a true freshman and played more than most expected. He flashed promising signs, too, such as his play in victories over Texas and Texas Tech. Just about every Big 12 coach, from Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley to Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, had good things to say about Duggan throughout the season. "He's an impressive kid, man," Riley said last season. "He's athletic, an aggressive runner and he's got a really good guy [TCU offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie] coaching him, so you know he's going to get better quickly like he has." - Fort Worth Star

Freshman Max Duggan led touchdown drives on all three of his first-half possessions as TCU scored on every first-half possessions on Saturday and was never threatened in a 51-14 victory over Kansas to open Big 12 play. TCU (3-1, 1-0) dominated in every area of the first half against Kansas (2-3, 0-2), which ended a 48-game road losing streak to Power 5 opponents earlier this season at Boston College. TCU was locked in from the opening kickoff, coming off a home loss to rival SMU a week ago that knocked the Horned Frogs out of the Top 25. The Horned Frogs had some extra motivation as well after losing last year at Kansas.

Duggan started for a second straight game but was replaced midway through the second quarter by graduate transfer Alex Delton with the Horned Frogs in full control at 28-0. Delton, who played last year at Kansas State, led TCU on two scoring drives to end the first half for a 38-0 lead. Duggan, who played all but one snap a week ago against SMU after sharing time the first two weeks, was in for the first two second-half drives before giving way to Delton. Delton led his first touchdown drive of the season in the second quarter and finished 10-for-15 passing for 186 yards. - TCU/AP College Football
