Mikel Jones, Syracuse football's two-time captain linebacker, is officially forgoing his final year of eligibility and declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft, he announced via Instagram on Wednesday. Jones' announcement does not come as a surprise. He nearly l eft Syracuse last year to try for the draft following his third season with the team, but a feeling of responsibility to his teammates and a desire to play in a bowl game brought him back. Through four seasons, Jones made 301 tackles for Syracuse, includ ing 24 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, four interceptions and four forced fumbles and recoveries. He was a two-time team captain, a two-time All-ACC honoree and an All-America freshman in 2019. - The Post-Standard

When the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason picks were announced, the Syracuse Orange didn't pay attention. They knew where they stood: last. Surprise! Nearing the midpoint of the season, the Orange (5-0, 2-0) are unbeaten, having their best start since 1987 and ranked No. 18 in the AP Top 25. "Every year is different, every team is different, and I just feel like they feel like they can," coach Dino Babers said. "Now, we've got to continue to see. The proof is in the pudding, but so far, so good." Las t season, Syracuse finished 5-7 and suffered three straight losses by three points. So far this season, the Orange are 2-0 in nailbiters: 32-29 over Purdue when Garrett Shrader threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Oronde Gadsden II with 7 seconds left, and 22-20 against Virginia thanks to a a 31-yard field goal with 74 seconds left by Andre Szmyt - his career-high fifth of the game.So, how has the most penalized team in the nation - averaging 10 a game, tied with Cincinnati - remained perfect? It's a combination of things, and luck is probably among them. The offense guided by new coordinator Robert Anae is tied for ninth nationally with No. 8 Oklahoma State, scoring on 23 of 24 trips (15 TDs, eight field goals) into the red zone. The swarming 3-3- 5 defense, aka "The Mob," tops the ACC, allowing 271.6 yards and 14 points per game. And Szmyt, with the oversight of new special teams coach Bob Ligashesky, has regained his form from four years ago, when he was voted the best kicker in the nation. Szmy t has missed only once in 11 field goal attempts. The defense, led by linebackers Mikel Jones and Marlowe Wax and defensive back Garrett Williams, indicated early that this season might be different in a dominating 31-7 season-opening victory over Louisv ille at home. - AP College Football

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers is shaking things up when it comes to his team's leadership in 2022. During his appearance on the ACC's Gramlich and Mac Lain podcast last week, Babers said Syracuse will have six team captains this season for what he believes is the first time. Three captains have already been selected, while the other three will be voted upon closer to SU's season opener against Louisville on Sept. 3.Babers said the decision was influenced by players having extended eligibili ty due to Covid-19, meaning they've been around the program for longer than normal. "Just wanted to make sure that the kids knew who to look up to," Babers said. "And there's some guys that have been here a long time. They know the system, they know the school and they know me." A program spokesman told syracuse.com at ACC Kickoff that linebacker Mikel Jones and offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron had already been selected as team captains. Kicker Andre Szmyt is the third captain to already be chosen, Ba bers revealed on the podcast co-hosted by Kelly Gramlich and Eric Mac Lain. - The Post-Standard

Forty-five days stand between Louisville football and its season opener against Syracuse, but a member of the Orange's defense has already dished out some some bulletin-board material for the Cardinals to work with. Taking the stage Wednesday at the Atla ntic Coast Conference's Kickoff event in Charlotte, North Carolina, Syracuse senior linebacker Mikel Jones was asked for his outlook on U of L's offense heading into Week 1 with dual-threat quarterback Malik Cunningham under center."We see it as a good opportunity. We don't think it's going to be a tough challenge," said Jones, who recorded 110 total tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss as a junior. "We're excited to play those guys the first week." It's tough talk from Jones as Louisville will look to stretch its winning streak over Syracuse to four in a row when the two teams kick off at 8 p.m. Sept. 3 inside JMA Wireless Dome in upstate New York. The Cardinals boast a 13-7 overall record against the Orange and are coming off a 41-3 victory agains t coach Dino Babers' team on Nov. 13, 2021. - Courier Journal

Three more Syracuse football players have been named to a preseason watch list. Linebacker Mikel Jones, offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron and kicker Andre Szmyt were named to the Shrine Bowl 1000 list, which features 1,000 all-star game and draft-eligib le players ahead of the upcoming season. Jones, who has already been named to the Athlon and Phil Steele preseason All-America teams, was a 2021 All-ACC first team selection and an Orange team captain. He finished the season with 110 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Jones is appearing at ACC Kickoff next week. - The Daily Orange

Syracuse star linebacker Mikel Jones and defensive end Caleb Okechukwu both announced that they would return to the Orange on Thursday night, keeping a pair of projected starters in place heading into next year. Jones, an All-ACC First Team linebacker an d a team captain, said late in the year that he was considering entering the NFL Draft following a stellar junior season, making his decision a critical one for the Orange this offseason. Jones had said that he planned to seek information from the NFL Dr aft Advisory Committee before making his decision. The other big decision the Syracuse defense is waiting on will come from his roommate, defensive back Garrett Williams. The return of both players will be a big boost for an Orange defense that finished second in the ACC in total defense (330.3 yards per game) and sixth in the conference in scoring defense (26.3 points). - The Post-Standard

Syracuse linebacker Mikel Jones is on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, a national award that honors the nation's top linebacker. Jones, a third-year player with sophomore eligibility, was one of the most disruptive players in the country la st season, having a hand in eight turnovers, including nation-leading four interceptions. He earned All-ACC recognition after finishing last season with 69 tackles, including two for loss, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
