Michigan football star Mazi Smith admitted to his mistakes in front of Ann Arbor's 15th District Court Judge Karen Quinlan Valvo on Thursday afternoon and said that he learned his lesson during his sentencing for a misdemeanor gun crime. "I've had an opportunity to learn," said Smith. "I learned immediately in the back of a police car, but I had an opportunity to turn this into a lesson quickly." Valvo sentenced Smith to 12 months of probation, under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act (HYTA).

The act gives young adults a chance at avoiding a criminal record if they successfully complete the conditions given to them. Smith's attorney, John Shea, originally asked for the 12-month probation to be reduced to six months but Judge Valvo rejected the request. Instead, she told Smith that if he completes six months with no violations he can request an early discharge. As of now, he is set to appear again Dec. 28 for his final discharge. - The Detroit News

Mazi Smith, the big, physical tackle who commanded plenty of attention from opposing offenses the last couple of years, has decided to leave school and go pro. The Michigan defensive tackle will forego his remaining eligibility and declare for the 2023 NFL Draft, according to a Monday afternoon report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. Smith, a consensus first-team all-Big Ten defensive lineman, has not yet announced announced his decision publicly - but Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter acknowledged the news Monday, writing on social media: "Go be great Mazi!"

The move doesn't come as a big surprise. Asked about his future after Michigan's loss to Texas Christian in the Fiesta Bowl, Smith sounded conflicted and told MLive he needed to solicit advice from his mother. The 6-foot-3, 337-pound Smith posted a career-high season in 2022, totaling 48 tackles (2 1/2 for a loss), half a sack and a forced fumble in 14 starts. He was also named college football's preseason No. 1 "freak" by The Athletic. - Ann Arbor News

Sentencing for Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith, who had faced a felony concealed weapons charge and pleaded down to a misdemeanor charge during a probable-cause hearing last week, has been moved to Jan. 12. Smith was to have been sentenced Dec. 29 via Zoom in Washtenaw County 15th District Court before Judge Karen Valvo while he and the team are in Arizona for a national semifinal playoff game. An order was signed Wednesday to adjourn the sentencing and the new date appeared in online court records on Thursday. He will be sentenced under Michigan's Holmes Youthful Trainee Act. After Smith's Oct. 7 arrest, he left with the team and played at Indiana on Oct. 8.

The senior co-captain has not faced suspension from Michigan since his arrest. He was arraigned two days before Michigan's appearance in the Big Ten championship game on Dec. 3 and played. Michigan is now preparing for a national semifinal game on Dec. 31 in Arizona - Smith's original sentencing date was scheduled two days before. Smith now will have a pre-sentencing interview Jan. 3 ahead of the Jan. 12 sentencing. If Michigan wins the semifinal, it advances to the national title game on Jan. 9. Also of note, the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL Draft is Jan. 16 and Smith is eligible to head to the NFL. A Michigan football spokesman has said there is no change in Smith's status with the team. - Detroit News

Michigan defensive lineman Mazi Smith pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor Thursday, a week after he was charged with a felony for possessing a gun in his pickup truck without a concealed-weapon permit. Smith's record will be scrubbed clean if stays out of trouble for a certain period of time, which is a common offer for young people with no past criminal activity. Smith, 21, was stopped for speeding on Oct. 7 and found to have a handgun and ammunition but not a concealed-pistol permit, Ann Arbor police said. He was taken to the police station and released a day before Michigan faced Indiana.

Smith pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge involving a vehicle. He's scheduled to return to court on Dec. 29, two days before No. 2 Michigan plays No. 3 TCU in the Fiesta Bowl, part of the College Football Playoff. Washtenaw County prosecutor Eli Savit, a Wolverine fan, was criticized for waiting nearly two months to file a charge. He said there was nothing remarkable about the timeline, especially when Smith was not in custody, which would have forced a quicker decision. - AP College Football

Michigan standout defensive lineman Mazi Smith has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, records show. The felony charge was filed Wednesday in an Ann Arbor court, nearly two months after the alleged incident, according to online records. Smith, a 21-year-old team co-captain from Grand Rapids, Michigan, had four tackles and one assist against Indiana on Oct. 8, the next day. No. 2 Michigan, which is expected to make the four-team College Football Playoff field for a second straight year, is playing Purdue in Indianapolis on Saturday for the Big Ten championship. A message seeking comment was not immediately returned by Smith's attorney. The 6-foot-3, 337-pound Smith had a tackle and three assists in last weekend's 45-23 victory over Ohio State. He has started in all 26 games for the Wolverines over the past two seasons. - AP College Football

Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith might be better known these days as a "freak," a description that absolutely suits him and is backed up by weight room and conditioning numbers. The 21-year-old senior also has been, to his teammates, noticeably more vocal as a leader heading into this upcoming season, a pivot from Smith's quiet, lead-by-example demeanor. Smith joked during Big Ten media days last month that a lot has changed since he starred at East Kentwood High near Grand Rapids. He slimmed down, added muscle, improved his football knowledge and play, and decided to ditch the goggles he wore when he played in high school. "It's like come on, take off the goggles," Smith said. "Come on, you're a grown man." The goggles were a look, his younger self's version of making a statement. But Smith, now, 6-foot-3, 337 pounds - he added 11 pounds in the offseason - and coming off a season he was named All-Big Ten honorable mention, is planning to make a more significant on-field statement this fall as a leader of what Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has called a "no-star" defense. - Detroit News

They're not seeing stars yet. But the way Jim Harbaugh sees it, that's just fine. In fact, Michigan's head coach seems to think his "no-star" defense will be a constellation worth watching this fall. Maybe even more so than the lights-out unit that helped lead the Wolverines to their first Big Ten title since 2004 last season. "When you lose players like (David) Ojabo and Aidan Hutchinson, Dax Hill, Josh Ross, that's gonna be the first question: How are you going to replace those guys?" Harbaugh said earlier this week on Michigan's "In the Trenches" podcast. "I really think that our defense could be better as a 'no-star' defense. I've been a part of many of those that were great defenses and it creates more competition. … Guys are more hungry." And so far, at least, his players seem to be eating up that idea, along with the opportunities that come with it. Nine days into fall camp, and barely three weeks from the season opener at Michigan Stadium, the Wolverines are rallying around the promise that a "more cohesive unit" will be their best defense in the face of understandable skepticism.

"When our guys buy into that, and they play really hard, they're not worried about who makes the play," said Jesse Minter, the new defensive coordinator replacing Mike Macdonald, who returned to the Baltimore Ravens after just one season in Ann Arbor. "When somebody makes a play, we all make a play. I've been very, very pleased with the mentality in that regard." That mentality certainly has been embraced by Mazi Smith, the 337-pound senior defensive tackle whose gravitational pull as a leader is just as impressive as his explosive athletic traits in the trenches. Earlier this week, fellow senior Mike Morris found himself repeatedly quoting Smith when he talked about some of these issues. And when asked why, he laughed, "Oh, I have to." "Because we've been separated in the past," Morris added, "and Mazi wants us to be one unit...There's no defense running through just a couple guys. It's 11 men on the field getting to the passer. It's 11 people working together to be the best defense it can be." - Detroit News

Through Michigan's strength staff, Bruce Feldman found out that: Mazi Smith has benched 22 reps of 325 pounds (not the typical 225), close-grip benched 550 pounds, posts a 44-inch vertical jump, and broad-jumped 9 feet, 4 1/2 inches. And that's just his power and agility. As for speed, well, Smith has that, too. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native has clocked a shuttle time of 4.41 seconds, which Feldman notes would've tied any defensive tackle at the NFL Scouting Combine this year; a 3-cone drill time of 6.95 seconds, which would have been the fastest; and a 60-yard shuttle of 11.90 seconds.

Perhaps even more impressive, however, is Smith's performance in some of the drills Herbert and his staff ask the players to take part in. In one specific drill, players attempt to jump up a series of seven 26-inch high stairs as fast as they can. The program record is apparently 2.21 seconds, and Smith did it in 2.82 seconds. (For comparison, Aidan Hutchinson, who was No. 2 on Feldman's 'freaks' list last year and is 60 pounds lighter than Smith, did it in 2.57 seconds.) Smith even dominated Michigan's combo-twist machine aimed to measure resistance in the trenches, forcing the strength staff to call the manufacturer to have more weight added to the machine. "Mazi's rotational strength is ridiculous," Herbert told The Athletic, touting Smith as the strongest defensive lineman he's seen in his 25 years in football. "He is an incredible combination of rare traits packaged into one player. He is just ridiculously strong and powerful." - Ann Arbor News

Mazi Smith got his chance to settle in along Michigan's defensive line last year, blending in among a group of playmakers who helped take that side of the ball to new heights. Now, as the 2022 season nears, expectations are high for the senior defensive tackle from Grand Rapids. Smith, who was listed at 6-foot-3 and 326 pounds in the spring, will serve as the anchor up front this fall. Not just a guy who's called on to fill a role, but a leader tasked with helping bring the Wolverines through a transformation. "Every year the leadership changes hands," Smith said in the spring. "You've got to go out there and get it. Some people like to lead by example; some people like to talk. You've just got to go get it." Smith made sure to point out he "ain't the leader yet, but if I do everything right I will be." And with edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo, and starting defensive tackle Christopher Hinton, all gone, the door is now open to some new voices.

One of those expected to speak up is edge rusher Mike Morris, called on to help fill the void on the outside. And while Morris, friendly, animated and serious, may do most of the talking, Smith enters the new season with the most experience. Not only has he appeared in 21 games over the past three seasons, but Smith has 14 starts under his belt - the most, by far, among Michigan's returning defensive linemen. He was the Wolverines' primary nose-gap tackle last year, a big body who could clog up the middle and help defend the run game. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan linebacker Josh Ross paused, considered the question and then responded emphatically, emphasizing the name of his teammate for added impact. After all, making an impact in the interior of the defensive line is exactly what Michigan has needed. Ross was asked at Big Ten Media Days the player he believes will surprise people this season when Michigan opens Sept. 4 at home against Western Michigan. "Mazi Smith is going to ball out this year," Ross said. "D tackle. Yes he is." Gone is two-time captain Carlo Kemp, and at a position that Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said recently the Wolverines have been undersized, there are several candidates for playing time.

Donovan Jeter and Chris Hinton are among them, as well as Jess Speight, who participated in a TUFF charity event last Saturday and is noticeably bigger after adding about 20 pounds to his 6-foot-5 frame. There's also Oregon State transfer Jordan Whittley who is 6-1 and in June told the Detroit News he is 355, down 30 pounds. But it is Smith who was mentioned most prominently at media days. "Mazi Smith has really asserted himself through spring ball and this summer cycle," Harbaugh said. "Mazi looks good. These guys would walk in and you'd say, 'Man they're big.' Chris Hinton, Jess Speight, there's some good guys. Julius Welschof, 293-295 (pounds) and really running as good as he ran when he was 240-245, (but) he's gonna be more of an end." - Detroit News
