Former Clemson/current University of Miami receiver Frank Ladson will likely be among a rare group of players who by the end of 2022 can say they played for one team, transferred to a program they previously faced, then faced their original team after transferring. "I missed home,'' said the 6-4, 205-pound Ladson, a fourth-year junior who was rated as high as a five-star prep receiver (PrepStar) and four-star wideout by other major recruiting sites when he played at Homestead South Dade High School. "It was time to come home." Not only has Ladson caught passes from No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Trevor Lawrence, he's now catching passes from projected first-round pick Tyler Van Dyke.

Charleston Rambo, who set UM's single-season school receiving record in 2021 (1,172 yards and seven touchdowns on 79 catches) and is now battling for an NFL spot with the Carolina Panthers, played in the 2019 and 2020 College Football Playoff. "Some of the guys asked me about it. Like, 'What's the biggest game you ever played in? The loudest game you ever played in?' Ladson said Thursday after the the sixth day of fall camp and first session in full pads. "It's just a different type of atmosphere. You're in the playoff [and] you're playing for a championship. At the end of the game they bring a stage out and confetti falls." Ladson, whose Clemson career was marred by consecutive seasons of sports hernia injuries which he said necessitated two surgeries - one on each side - said he's now healthy, fighting for a starting spot and doing everything he can to become the big-bodied receiver the Hurricanes need. - Miami Herald

Clemson starting receiver Frank Ladson Jr. and backup quarterback Taisun Phommachanh are leaving the program. Team spokesman Ross Taylor said Friday the pair have entered the NCAA transfer portal. Ladson is a 6-foot-3 junior from Miami who started the first four games. He did not play the final seven games of season for the 22nd-ranked Tigers and eventually had season-ending groin surgery. Ladson's best season was in 2020 when he had 18 catches for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Ladson had 31 catches for 440 yards and nine touchdowns in his three seasons. Phommachanh was behind starting passer D.J. Uiagalelei this season, playing in six games. Phommachanh, a 6-3 sophomore from Bridgeport, Connecticut, finished the year completing 11 of 19 passes for 131 yards, a touchdown and an interception. - AP College Football

Coach Dabo Swinney had high hopes for Ladson in 2020, but injuries cost the wide receiver valuable playing time. When he was on the field, Ladson flashed the ability to get open in deep-ball situations, but was often plagued by drops. He finished the season with 18 catches for 281 yards and three touchdowns. With Powell and Rodgers gone, there will be an opportunity for Ladson to step up. - Charleston Post Courier

In the moments after former Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, South Dade High School coach Nathaniel Hudson sent a text to one his favorite pupils: "You got next." Frank Ladson Jr. didn't take long to respond: "I already know." The opportunity for Ladson, a sophomore wide receiver for the Tigers, got even bigger when junior Justyn Ross (congenital spine fusion) was ruled out for the season. If there is a 2020 campaign, Ladson is likely to step into a more prominent role. Those who watched him transform from a quiet high school kid to a 4-star recruit believe the sophomore is ready to take the leap.

"Now is his time to shine," South Dade offensive coordinator Herman Reaves said. "I think it's his coming out year." Last season, then, was his introduction year. In a wide receivers room that also included junior Amari Rodgers and Diondre Overton (who is now out of eligibility), Ladson was cast as a bit player. He recorded nine catches for 128 yards and three touchdowns. He was often grouped with fellow then-freshman Joseph Ngata, who finished with 17 catches for 240 yards and three touchdowns. - Charleston Post Courier

Clemson freshman receiver Frank Ladson had a strong start to fall camp, but his progress is on hold after "a little irritation with his knee" that will keep him sidelined for a couple of weeks, according to Tigers coach Dabo Swinney. "He had just some little stuff in there we needed to clean up yesterday morning," Swinney said following Saturday's scrimmage, Clemson's first of the preseason. Swinney added that Ladson "should be" ready for the season opener against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29. The former four-star recruit was working with the second team during fall camp prior to the injury. - The State
