2022 ALL-BIG 12 FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: RB Eric Gray, Oklahoma, Sr.,...A senior from Memphis, Tenn., Gray leads the Big 12 and ranks 13th nationally by averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He also ranks second in the Big 12 in rushing yards (1,366) and rushing yards per game (113.8) and ranks third in all-purpose yards per outing (132.9). He is tied for seventh nationally (leads the Big 12) with his 43 carries of at least 10 yards and his 14 carries of at least 20 yards. Gray has eight 100-yard rushing games and eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in his career, reaching that mark in 10 games, the fastest by a Sooner since Adrian Peterson in 2004. His 1,364 rushing yards stand as the ninth-most in OU single-season history. - Oklahoma Football

  10/29/22 - RB Eric GraySr/2023, Oklahoma, 5-10, 205 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Eric Gray rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown, and the Oklahoma defense posted three interceptions and the Sooners defeated Iowa State 27-13 on Saturday. A pick by linebacker Danny Stutsman came with 5:24 left in the fourth quarter and set up a 2-yard scoring run by Gray to seal the game for Oklahoma (5-3, 2-3 Big 12). It was the fifth straight loss for Iowa State (3-5, 0-5). The previous four defeats had been by a total of 14 points. Oklahoma used a little trickery to get its first touchdown. The Sooners were lined up for a 19-yard field goal late in the first quarter, but holder Michael Turk flipped the ball to kicker Zach Schmit as he ran past.

Schmit's 2-yard touchdown reception put Oklahoma up 10-3 early in the second quarter. He hit two field goals and an extra point before halftime, accounting for all of the Sooners' first 13 points. Oklahoma's second touchdown was more traditional, a 41-yard pass from Dillon Gabriel to Jalil Farooq in the third quarter. Iowa State answered with a 12 play, 53-yard touchdown drive - converting two fourth-and-long situations - with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter, trimming the margin to 20-13. The Cyclones' next two possessions ended with interceptions, including Stutsman's pick. Hunter Dekkers finished 37-for-57 passing for 312 yards and a touchdown to go along with the three picks. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

  08/17/22 - RB Eric GraySr/2023, Oklahoma, 5-10, 205 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Oklahoma enters the season in a familiar spot. The Sooners landed at No. 9 in the Associated Press' preseason poll, the outlet announced Monday. It's the seventh straight season the Sooners are ranked inside the Top 10 in the poll and the 19th time in the past 22 seasons. Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame took the top five spots, respectively. Alabama defeated Ohio State in the national championship game last season. Oklahoma is the highest ranked Big 12 team in the poll, one spot ahead of Baylor (No. 10) and three spots ahead of Oklahoma State (No. 12). Texas and Kansas State received votes but did not make the poll. This marks the 23rd straight season the Sooners are ranked inside the Top 25 entering the season, which is the second-longest streak behind Ohio State (34). Of Oklahoma's 64 appearances in the poll, the Sooners have been ranked inside the top 10 48 times. - Norman Transcript

  08/05/22 - RB Eric GraySr/2023, Oklahoma, 5-10, 205 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Eric Gray figured to return to his star role at Tennessee for his junior season. But when head coach Jeremy Pruitt was fired in January 2021 following an in-house investigation into alleged recruiting improprieties, Gray entered the transfer portal and landed at OU. Gray was expected to be half of a two-headed monster alongside redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks, but the pairing proved to be lopsided. Brooks ran for a career-high 1,253 yards and 13 touchdowns on 198 carries last season. Gray ran for a career-low 412 yards and a pair of scores on 78 carries. "Last year, I kind of just stayed in the background and didn't really say too much," Gray said Tuesday at the Sooners' media day. "I think it was more of me learning. I needed to learn to further my game mentally." One person who helped Gray stay the course was his father, Eric Gray Sr.

After playing running back at Tennessee State from 1985-87, the elder Eric stayed in the state and began coaching at the high school level. That included Lausanne High School, where Eric Jr. starred until he graduated in 2019. "I'm a coach's son, so I've seen so many players kind of do it the wrong way," Eric Jr. said. "I need to make sure I'm doing everything I can to succeed and make sure I'm not harming myself." So when Eric Jr. struggled to carve out a role last season, his father told him exactly what he needed to hear. "Just keep going," Eric Sr. told his son. "They can't keep a good man down. Keep playing and your time will come." - Daily Oklahoman

Before fall camp, Gray had already positioned himself at the top of the backfield depth chart. The former Tennessee running back and Kennedy Brooks were already expected to split ball-handling dues. But Marcus Major's academic ineligibility and Bradford's departure puts more pressure on Gray to produce right away. His running back coach, DeMarco Murray, said Gray has the mindset needed to do that. "He has a great mindset about him, a great work ethic and a great demeanor overall," Murray said last week. "Talk about a guy who is a pro. You don't have to say much to him. You don't get him revved up. He takes care of his body, he takes care of his notes, he takes care of his playbook. Mentally, physically and emotionally, he's been everything that you want. "He's been a great asset for this room and this team. You talk about a guy who does it the right way on and off the field, he's high up there." Gray recorded six total touchdowns, 772 rushing yards and 254 receiving yards last season with Tennessee. - Norman Transcript

  08/15/21 - RB Eric GraySr/2023, Oklahoma, 5-10, 205 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Eric Gray went to school in more ways than one early last year. The Tennessee transfer running back had plenty of catching up to do in not a lot of time before spring football began for OU. Gray had to get Lincoln Riley's offense, which can be plenty complicated, down quickly. "I've always been a guy that can remember things easily," Gray said. "Even when I was taking tests, I could study really quick, using flash cards." So Gray took the same approach to learning the Sooners' offense. "I would go home at night and be like, 'OK, we're running this play. Now what do you do? This is the pass play, what's the protection?," Gray said. "Different things like that."

Gray also had a dry-erase board in his room, where he'd diagram plays and responsibilities to try to drill it into his mind. "I didn't want to be in the back," Gray said. "Everyone else had already known the system so I wanted to catch up fast and hit the ground running." There are high expectations for Gray, who transferred after rushing for more than 1,300 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 360 yards and three touchdowns on 43 receptions for the Volunteers over the past two seasons. "Eric's very explosive," Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler said. "He makes good cuts, can make you miss easily, great vision, and pretty fast." - Daily Oklahoman

Eric Gray had little doubt about where he wanted to transfer following two seasons with Tennessee. The 5-foot-10 running back, who rushed for 772 yards and four touchdowns last season, realized a major opportunity awaited him at Oklahoma. "Just looking at the past, you see how great the offense is," Gray said. "I saw myself and how great I could fit into the offense just playing for a guy like Lincoln Riley and having a position coach like DeMarco Murray, someone who's played in the [NFL], who's been there before, it was just all-around amazing." Gray acted on his instinct, transferred to OU and is practicing with the team this spring. He's only had a couple of months to get acclimated with OU's running backs group, which must replace 2020 starter and NFL-bound running back Rhamondre Stevenson this coming season. Gray's transition has been smooth so far, according to Murray, who's entering his second year as OU's running backs coach. "The first word that comes to mind about Eric Gray is a pro," Murray said. "He's a true pro on and off the field. He's a guy that shows up early, stays late, extremely smart. The transition for him offensively, scheme-wise has been very, honestly, easy for him. And our offense is extremely complicated." - Norman Transcript

Eric Gray, Tennessee football's top offensive threat in 2020, has entered the transfer portal. Gray posted 1,026 total yards in nine games in 2020 - 772 rushing yards and 254 receiving yards. He is the fourth Vol to enter the portal since Jeremy Pruitt was fired Monday. Gray was unavailable to play against Texas A&M. Pruitt declined to elaborate on Gray's absence, including when asked specifically if it was due to a compliance issue. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Eric Gray and Ty Chandler combined to rush for 195 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead No. 21 Tennessee to a 35-12 victory over Missouri Saturday. The Vols (2-0) have won eight in a row, tying them with Notre Dame for the most among Power Five teams. Connor Bazelak relieved Shawn Robinson at quarterback in the second quarter or Missouri (0-2), but the Tigers could still only muster one touchdown. Jarrett Guarantano played a mistake-free game for Tennessee, completing 14 of 23 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. He also converted on three fourth-down runs in the first quarter and had two short touchdown runs. Behind a strong performance by Tennessee's offensive line, the Vols battered the defense. Gray ran for 105 yards, with a touchdown rushing and receiving. Chandler rolled up 90 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers couldn't limit the run, which opened up Tennessee's passing game for some big plays as the Vols led 21-6 at intermission. Gray's 20-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter allowed the sophomore to become the first Volunteer to score rushing TDs in four consecutive games since quarterback Josh Dobbs in 2016. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Somebody could make Southeastern Conference football history this season by becoming the first 1,000-yard rusher against a 10-game league schedule. Tennessee sophomore Eric Gray wouldn't mind having that distinction. The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder from Memphis erupted at the end of last season, shredding Vanderbilt for 246 yards on 25 carries and following that up with a 14-carry, 86-yard showing in the Gator Bowl against Indiana. Gray earned MVP honors with his performance in Jacksonville but knows that averaging 100 yards per week against league opposition would be quite the task.

"We're going to have to take care of our bodies for sure for that to happen, and it would be a great thing to do," Gray said Thursday on a Zoom call. "If you can go out there and play 10 straight SEC games and go out there and put 1,000 yards up - who knows? Maybe you can put 2,000 yards up. "If you can go out there and prove that you're that back playing 10 SEC games - no one has ever done that. If you could be the first to do it, that would be pretty special." Tennessee's last 1,000-yard rusher was Jalen Hurd, who tallied 1,288 yards in 2015. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Tennessee sure knows how to get out of a huge hole. The Volunteers scored twice in a 30-second span late, using an onside kick to help escape a 13-point deficit, and then held on to stun Indiana 23-22 in the Gator Bowl on Thursday night. The rally was indicative of Tennessee's season, which started 1-4 and ended with six consecutive wins. "Everybody in the country had given up on these guys," second-year coach Jeremy Pruitt said. Pruitt was talking about the season. He could have been talking about the game.

The Hoosiers (8-5) looked to be in control in the second half after scoring two touchdowns in a 1:03 span, the second one coming on Jamar Johnson's 63-yard interception return, and later adding a pair of field goals. Indiana was up 22-9 before Tennessee (8-5) shocked most of the nearly 62,000 fans on hand. Quavaris Crouch scored on a 1-yard plunge and then fellow running back Eric Gray recovered a surprise onside kick that barely went the mandatory 10 yards. Gray scored from 16 yards out a few plays later to put the Vols on top for good. "Obviously, very very disappointing to have a fourth-quarter lead and let it slip away," said Indiana coach Tom Allen, whose team was seeking its first nine-win season since 1967. "I'm not going to sit here and point fingers and blame. At the end of the day, it's my responsibility for us to find a way to win the game. We didn't do that." Gray was named the game's Most Valuable Player. - AP College Football

Tennessee freshman Eric Gray rushed for 246 yards and three touchdowns - including breakaways of 56 and 94 yards - as the Volunteers trounced Vanderbilt 28-10 on Saturday to end the regular season with a five-game winning streak. Lightning caused the game to start 28 minutes late. A second lightning delay lasting 39 minutes occurred midway through the fourth quarter with Tennessee leading 28-10. Gray more than doubled his previous season rushing total and had the fifth-highest single-game rushing total ever by a Tennessee player.

His 56-yard and 94-yard runs were Tennessee's two longest carries of the season. Gray's 94-yarder was the second-longest run from scrimmage in Tennessee history, trailing only Kelsey Finch's 99-yarder in a 27-17 loss to Florida in 1977. Tennessee (7-5, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) clinched its first winning season since 2016 as it continued its rebound from a 1-4 start. The Volunteers went 4-8 in 2017 and 5-7 last year. Vanderbilt (3-9, 1-7) was seeking its fourth straight victory in an annual series that Tennessee has traditionally dominated. Tennessee went 28-1 against Vanderbilt from 1983-2011, but Vanderbilt won five of their seven matchups from 2012-18 and had beaten the Vols by an average margin of 18 points the last three years. But the Commodores couldn't come close to extending that streak. - Tennessee/AP College Football
