 Garrett Shrader, Syracuse, Player News

  02/28/23 - QB Garrett ShraderrSr/2024, Syracuse, 6-5, 231 (DS#19 QB) + More +

Syracuse football's starting quarterback Garrett Shrader will miss the entirety of spring practice after undergoing a successful procedure on his right arm, the program announced Monday. A source close to the program told syracuse.com that the procedure was specifically on Shrader's elbow. They could not provide more details on the procedure itself.

Spring practice starts March 21. The spring game is set for April 21. "I'm disappointed to miss the rest of the spring, but looking forward to rehabbing and getting ready for this upcoming season," Shrader said in the release. Shrader captained SU's offense in 11 and a half games this season, missing six quarters in November with an undisclosed lower body injury. It is currently unknown what his recent procedure on his throwing arm was for and when he suffered the injury that necessitated it. - The Post-Standard

  12/09/22 - QB Garrett ShraderrSr/2024, Syracuse, 6-5, 231 (DS#19 QB) + More +

As of Tuesday, Syracuse looks set to return its entire quarterback corp for the 2023 season, including Garrett Shrader. The starting QB told reporters Monday he plans on returning to Syracuse next year and closing out his college career in an Orange uniform. In addition to backup Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, who played a full game-and-a-half this season when Shrader was injured, the Orange should have JaCobian Morgan and walk-on Luke McPhail back as other options in the room. Justin Lamson will be healthy again after a year off, too, and three-star South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers is planning to sign with SU later this month. - The Post-Standard

Garrett Shrader completed 21 of 27 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns, and Syracuse scored 26 straight points to overcome an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit, snap a five-game losing streak and beat Boston College 32-23 on Saturday night. Oronde Gadsden II caught six passes for 106 yards, Devaughn Cooper caught seven for 80 and a touchdown and Damien Alford caught four for 83 yards and the go-ahead score for the Orange (7-5, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). Sean Tucker ran for 125 yards and two TDs for Syracuse, which won its first game since Oct. 15, when it improved to 6-0 and No. 14 in The Associated Press Top 25. Emmett Morehead completed 29 for 38 passes for 252 yards for BC (3-9, 2-6), but he also fumbled twice. Zay Flowers caught eight passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns, surpassing 3,000 yards in his career and setting a school record with his 11th and 12th TD catch of the season.

BC took a two-score lead early in the fourth after Morehead found Flowers for 30 yards down the sideline to the Orange 28-yard line. A penalty and two Pat Garwo runs made it 17-6. But Shrader hit Cooper for for an 8-yard touchdown and then, after BC went five-and-out, Shrader needed just three plays and 50 seconds to go 73 yards, taking an 18-17 lead on a 58-yard strike to Alford with 7:05 to play. BC's next possession ended on a strip-sack by Steve Okechukwu at the Eagles 37, allowing the Orange to extend the lead to 25-17 on Tucker's 5-yard TD run. BC turned the ball over on downs and Tucker broke free for a 29-yard score to make it 32-17. Morehead hit Flowers from 2 yards out to cut the Syracuse lead to 32-23, but the 2-point attempt failed. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Garrett Shrader threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as Syracuse routed former Big East rival UConn 48-14 on Saturday night. The 6-foot-4 junior completed 20 of his 23 passes for 287 yards as the Orange improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2018. Sean Tucker added 112 yards rushing on 27 carries with touchdown for the Orange, who scored on their first seven possessions. Freshman Zion Turner went 14-of-17 for 92 yards and a touchdown and Nate Carter had 71 yards rushing for UConn (1-2) which has not beaten an FBS team since 2019.

Syracuse never trailed and scored on all five of its first-half drives, highlighted by a 47-yard strike from Shrader to Damien Alford which put the Orange up 17-0 and an 18-yard TD pass to Courtney Jackson just before halftime that made it 27-7. The Orange put up 465 total yards and held UConn to just 202. The Huskies scored on two big plays, a 28-yard second-quarter touchdown run by Devontae Houston and a 56-yard catch-and-run by receiver Aaron Turner in the third quarter.   Garrett Shrader rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two, including one to Damien Alford with 19 seconds left, to lift Syracuse to a 41-36 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Orange (4-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored 14 points in the final 2:28 to snap a three-game losing streak. Shrader's 45-yard scoring toss to Alford, who beat Virginia Tech's Dorian Strong, was the difference. "This is going to be one of those moments," Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. "I really see this as being one of those moments that starts the change. I can't promise you it's going to change in W's and L's, but I can tell you it's going to change in everything else." Syracuse cut a 36-27 deficit to 36-34 on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Shrader to Courtney Jackson with 2:28 remaining. The Orange's defense then stopped the Hokies on the ensuing possession, leading to Shrader's winning toss to Alford, who out jumped Strong at the 7 and ran it for the score. "That was a catch I have to make," Alford said. "I didn't see the play (he was hit as he was throwing)," Shrader said. "I just heard the stadium get kind of quiet. When you're away, that typically means it's a good thing." Shrader threw for 236 yards and rushed for 174, accounting for 410 of Syracuse's 550 yards of total offense. Sean Tucker added 112 yards rushing and a score. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Garrett Shrader is headed north. The former Mississippi State quarterback known for his long beard and gritty style of play announced via Twitter on Saturday that he has committed to Syracuse. Shrader entered the transfer portal in October. Mike Leach and his staff at State transitioned Shrader from quarterback to wide receiver in training camp. Shrader recorded one reception for eight yards against Arkansas. Shrader was viewed by many as Mississippi State's quarterback of the future. He started a handful of games as a true freshman in 2019. He completed 88 of 153 (57.5%) passes for 1,170 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. - The Clarion Ledger

Mississippi State quarterback/wide receiver Garrett Shrader has entered the transfer portal a according to a report from Matt Zenitz of AL.com. Shrader later confirmed the news via an announcement on Twitter. Recruited by the Joe Moorhead regime, Shrader arrived at MSU as a four-star prospect in the class of 2019. As a freshman, the Charlotte native split time with Penn State transfer Tommy Stevens throughout his inaugural campaign in Starkville, completing 88 of 153 passes for 1,170 yards and eight touchdowns.   The Shrader-copter has spun its way back onto the field. Mississippi State sophomore Garrett Shrader's playing time was in jeopardy from the moment K.J. Costello announced his decision to transfer to MSU from Stanford. True freshman Will Rogers enrolling early and playing well in preseason training camp didn't help Shrader's cause either. But coach Mike Leach has found a way to get Shrader, who started four games at quarterback for Mississippi State last year, back between the white lines - at slot receiver. Shrader infamously launched from the 24 yard line needing to make the 19 against Kansas State last year and was spun around before landing on the 20.

The play earned his teammates' respect. Now he'll have more opportunities for the Bulldogs to be bullish on him with the ball in his hands. Shrader scored two touchdowns in practice last week despite only lining up in the slot for three days. "He's looked impressive," Leach said. "He's got a sense of space and routes. He's tough to bring down. I've been kind of impressed with the way he's looked." Leach has a history of switching players' positions. Danny Amendola and Wes Welker played quarterback and running back, respectively, in high school before becoming two Texas Tech standouts at wide receiver. - The Clarion Ledger
