Baylor athletics is looking to expand NIL opportunities for its athletes by partnering with Opendorse to form the Baylor Bears NIL Marketplace, which will launch Aug. 3. The NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) Marketplace will offer a streamlined access point for organizations and individuals who would like to explore NIL collaborations with Baylor athletes, while remaining compliant with NCAA guidelines. "We fully support student-athletes earning from their NIL in a way that appropriately recognizes the importance of inclusive opportunity, appropriate market valuations, and positively building one's brand," Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades said in a release. Using Opendorse, all athletes can review and accept NIL deals, receive payments, disclose activities for compliance and auto-generate necessary tax documentation. Once deals are approved and completed, compensation at the agreed-upon amount is guaranteed. The Marketplace allows student-athletes to manage all communication within the secure Opendorse app. - Waco Tribune Herald

When Baylor reached the Big 12 championship game in the 2019 Sugar Bowl season, all-conference nose guard Bravvion Roy was a dominating force up front. Roy often occupied two blockers, allowing All-America defensive end James Lynch and the rest of the defenders free lanes to unload on quarterbacks. The Bears hope LSU transfer Siaki "Apu" Ika makes a similar impact this season. The 6-4, 350-pound Ika not only takes up a lot of space in the middle of Baylor's defense, his combination of strength and quickness is rare for a man that massive. "I expect him to have the biggest impact on the defense," said Baylor defensive lineman TJ Franklin. "Before we had a nose (guard), but we didn't have a nose that was able to go in there and eat up blocks, be able to pass rush, a nose that's able to do everything we need him to do."

Baylor coach Dave Aranda knew how important Ika could be to Baylor's defense because he coached him when he was defensive coordinator for LSU's 2019 national championship team. Ika was a key part of the Tigers' defensive line rotation as he recorded 17 tackles with 1.5 for loss. After playing in just four games last season, Ika decided to join Aranda at Baylor, and the transition has been smooth. "I know this defense like the back of my hand," Ika said. "The only different thing is the vocabulary, but it's pretty easy to get it down. That's a big part why I wanted to choose to make the transition because I knew if I made the move, I wouldn't be set back. I think it's kind of just pick up where I left off, kind of just get in and hit the ground running." - Waco Tribune Herald

It's quite evident that Baylor's defense is significantly ahead of the offense since new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes has just started installing the parts this spring. But Saturday's Green and Gold game at McLane Stadium showed that it isn't just a bevy of returning players who could make the defense one of the best in the Big 12 this fall. The Bears now have massive 6-4, 350-pound noseguard Siaki "Apu" Ika plugging the middle. The LSU sophomore transfer made his presence known in the intrasquad scrimmage as he burrowed through Baylor's offensive line to nail running back Qualan Jones for a safety while wreaking havoc on many other plays. "That's a force," said Baylor running back Abram Smith. "I ran into him today. He shot the A (gap) and hit me in the backfield. And I couldn't get away."

Ika began to show his talents on LSU's 2019 championship team in a backup noseguard role under then defensive coordinator Dave Aranda. After playing in only four games last season, Ika entered the transfer portal and decided to reunite with Aranda at Baylor. Joining a defense packed with veteran linebackers and defensive backs, Ika's presence in the middle will occupy blockers and free up Baylor's other defensive linemen to make plays. "I love Apu and his energy, I love his smile, I love his heart," Aranda said. "He knows the structure of the defense and the run fits. He knows protection and he's been able to tutor people on the sidelines. I know our guys respect him, not only how he plays, but he carries himself in such a way that they see where he's headed." - Waco Tribune Herald

LSU sophomore defensive lineman Siaki Ika announced Monday that he's transferring to Baylor. Baylor coach Dave Aranda recruited Ika to LSU when he was the team's defensive coordinator. Ika played in 13 games as a true freshman noseguard and recorded 17 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss for LSU's 2019 national championship team. The 6-4, 340-pound Ika was expected to compete for a starting position on LSU's defensive line in 2020, but played in just three games before announcing his decision to transfer in late October. - Waco Tribune Herald

Who will replace Shelvin? Since preseason camp opened Aug. 17, Orgeron has been optimistic about LSU's depth at defensive tackle. Former starting defensive end Glen Logan has moved inside to tackle, and it's possible that he pushes for starting time. However, Siaki "Apu" Ika is more built like Shelvin. A powerful former nose tackle listed at 6-foot-3, 346 pounds, Ika shared Shelvin's struggle to keep his playing weight down, but he showed promise in 13 games last season with 17 tackles and 1½ tackles for loss. Orgeron has also repeatedly praised true freshmen Jacobian Guillory and Jaquelin Roy, both four-star recruits who were going to see plenty of playing time anyway. "I think with the defensive line, we have a lot of depth," Orgeron said when preseason camp opened. "We can rotate those guys." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Like everyone else who follows college football, LSU director of strength and conditioning Tommy Moffitt is waiting to find out if and when the games will go on after the greatest danger passes from the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike most people, Moffitt's job is to make sure LSU's players are physically ready to train for the 2020 season, whether it can be played on time or begins later than scheduled. "My biggest concern is player safety," Moffitt said Monday night on LSU's in-house radio show, "LSU Sixty." "It's my responsibility to make sure they're in shape before we start any form of training camp. "For me to do my job, I feel I would need at least a month to prepare."

Moffitt said he and his staff meet once a week to discuss projects they're working on. One of the things they've been gaming out are various timelines depending on when the season would start. LSU is currently set to open the season Sept. 5 in Tiger Stadium against UTSA. "We need possible scenarios from June to August," Moffitt said. "I'm getting my staff and myself ready for whatever happens." Like the rest of the campus, LSU's athletic facilities are closed to its student-athletes except for some dining and medical support. Moffitt said he and his staff are in constant contact with the football players, whether they are still in Baton Rouge or back in their hometowns, having crafted training plans to help them work out on their own. - Baton Rouge Advocate
