2022 ALL-SEC FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL Derick Hall, Auburn,...A three-year starter along the Auburn defensive line, Hall has 147 career tackles, 18.5 sacks and 29.5 TFL. He has made a definite impact on the field, earning preseason all-SEC recognition and SEC defensive lineman of the week four times during his career, but his work off the field is even more lasting. Active in campus service efforts, he jumps in wherever he can use his influence to help, whether it's enlisting students to attend basketball games, providing water to those in need in his home state of Mississippi or donating turkey, toys and Halloween candy to the families of his hometown of Gulfport, Miss. - Auburn Football

There was one position that didn't get to fully showcase its ability during Auburn's first fall scrimmage - and no, we're not talking about the quarterbacks, who sported orange non-contact jerseys Saturday evening in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Because the Tigers' quarterbacks didn't go live in the team's first preseason scrimmage, Auburn's edge defenders didn't get to go full bore. Derick Hall and Eku Leota were relegated to a game of tag when it came to pass-rushing opportunities Saturday evening, but the duo-coming off a highly productive 2021 campaign-still came through with some pressure in the backfield. Leota was credited with one sack during the scrimmage, while Hall could have finished with a couple of his own, coach Bryan Harsin said afterward. Neither one got to actually hit the quarterbacks, but that didn't stop them from flaunting after forcing the offense into some potentially negative plays. "Our edges can bend the corner," Harsin said. "Here's the one thing - our guys know. They know, they kind of run by and razz each other a little bit."

Hall and Leota hope they can maintain that kind of production once the games actually count and once they can really let loose on opposing quarterbacks. The two proved to be a dynamic duo off the edge last season, their first playing together after Leota transferred from Northwestern, as they combined for 16 sacks, 22.5 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles. Hall led Auburn with nine sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss last season while picking up second-team All-SEC honors. He hopes to break the program's single-season sack record - Nick Fairley's 11.5 during the 2010 national championship campaign - this fall. "That's the goal," Hall said. "Last year was a really good year. I went back and watched some film and could've definitely had that opportunity last year, and I definitely should've had that opportunity last year, so I'm just trying to make that step and turn pressures and missed sacks into sacks and help this team get better. So, that's the goal." - Birmingham News

Six Auburn Tigers landed on Preseason All-SEC Teams, and Auburn was selected to finish last in the SEC West in the league's annual preseason media poll, which was released Friday. Running back Tank Bigsby, defensive linemen Derick Hall and Colby Wooden, linebacker Owen Pappoe and specialists Oscar Chapman and Anders Carlson were the Tigers' representatives on those teams, with Bigsby and Hall being the lone first-teamers. Bigsby is Auburn's most-productive returner from last year's offense. In 2021, he rushed for 1,099 yards and 10 touchdowns while also catching 21 passes. He finished with 1,283 total yards. Hall was Auburn's sack leader with nine, and also had a team-leading 12.5 tackles for loss to go with 52 total tackles. Wooden, who was voted All-SEC Second Team, had 61 tackles to go with 8.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. - Opelika-Auburn News

Auburn football has its trio of representatives at next week's Southeastern Conference Media Days in Atlanta, the SEC announced Tuesday, as running back Tank Bigsby, edge rusher Derick Hall and tight end John Samuel Shenker will make the trip east. All three will be first-time attendees, as former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix and linebacker Owen Pappoe attended for the Tigers a year ago. A year ago, Hall led the Tigers in both tackles for loss (12.5) and sacks (9), combining with Eku Leota for 22 tackles for loss and 16 sacks, marking one of the more productive pass-rushing duos in recent memory on the Plains. - Opelika-Auburn News

Derick Hall enters the 2022 season with lots of acclaim for his previous success on the gridiron. He was named to the 76th AL.com/The Birmingham News All-SEC Preseason 1st team. Auburn's hopes of bouncing back from last season will partially rest on Hall and his bookend Eku Leota making life tough on opposing quarterbacks in the Southeastern Conference.

Hall posted 54 tackles, 34 solos, 12.5 tackles for loss, and nine sacks last season for the Tigers. Hall anchors a defensive line that expects to be a bruising unit. "Really just getting better. Coming in day in and day out, pushing the younger guys, really working on bringing somebody along because when I leave, somebody's going to have to step into that role," Hall told reporters during spring practice. Trying to get better day in and day out, whether pass rush, run block, hands placement - little stuff that helps take you to the next level is the stuff I'm working on every day." - Birmingham News

Auburn's A-Day spring game officially has a start time. The Tigers' annual spring game at Jordan-Hare Stadium will kick off at 1 p.m. on April 9, the program announced Wednesday. A network for the broadcast of the game has yet to be announced, though last year's scrimmage aired on SEC Network+ and prior years saw the game broadcast on SEC Network. This year's A-Day will be the second of the Bryan Harsin era, as the Tigers look to bounce back from a disappointing 2021 campaign that included five straight losses to end the year, which resulted in the program's first losing season since 2012. This year's team will begin spring practice March 14 -- the first of 15 practices that will culminate with the spring game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. - Birmingham News

Derick Hall has made a name for himself this spring. The junior edge defender has been a steady and reliable presence in practices and team meetings for Auburn's defense as it adapts to a new coaching staff and defensive coordinator Derek Mason's new scheme. That dependability has not gone unnoticed, either. "He brings the consistency that you need with leadership," outside linebackers coach Bert Watts said. "And any great leader is going to be consistent. They're going to do the right things every single day, not just on the field but off the field.

They're going to have a steady mindset, be steady emotionally and not be up and down depending on how the day went or the day before went. "That's what Derick is. He's Mr. Consistency." Hall has emerged as a leader in Watts' position room this spring, doing so while making his own adjustments to a new position. After playing mostly at Buck and defensive end during his first two seasons on the Plains, Hall is now listed at the new edge defender position in Mason's defense. "It completely different," Hall said. And as the Tigers' third-leading sack producer last season, the Gulfport, Miss., native figures to be the team's top edge-rusher heading into the 2021 season. - Birmingham News

Helped by Hall and his four tackles, Auburn's defense held LSU to just 11 points, its lowest score since 2018. LSU also only rushed for 32 yards, which was also its worst rushing performance since 2018. The 32 rushing yards were the fewest by an SEC opponent since Arkansas rushed for 25 yards in 2016. Hall ended the day with four tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. It was his best career performance. After the game, Hall also earned Auburn's defensive helmet sticker, along with the rest of the defensive line. "We've harassed the quarterback better than we've done the entire year," coach Gus Malzahn said. "So they really took a step forward." LSU coach Ed Orgeron also made a comment about Auburn's defensive line play. He knew they were good, but he didn't know quite how good. "Well, you know, you asked me why we couldn't run the ball?" Hall said. "We tried. We couldn't block those guys. I saw other people block their fronts. I really was surprised we couldn't block them. I thought we could run the football." - Birmingham News
