2022 ALL-SEC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DB Keidron Smith, Kentucky,...Smith, a 6-foot-2, 204-pounder from West Pam Beach, Florida, transferred to Kentucky in 2022 for his graduate transfer season and made an immediate impact. He started 11 of 12 games for Ke ntucky, including the last 11, intercepting a pair of passes. He tallied 43 tackles in the regular season, 0.5 tackles for loss, five pass breakups and one fumble recovery.He had a massive play in UK's win over then-No. 12/19 Florida, returning to his home state and stepping in front of an Anthony Richardson pass, then returning it 65 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. He added his second interception against Vanderbilt. In his return to Oxford, Mississippi to face Ole Miss he charted si x tackles. No. 20 Kentucky intercepted Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson twice, including one Keidron Smith returned 65 yards for a touchdown, and the Wildcats toppled 12th-ranked Florida 26-16 on Saturday in the Swamp to notch consecutive wins in the series fo r the first time in 45 years. Richardson was off all night, a stark contrast from last week's three-touchdown, turnover-free performance against then-No. 7 Utah. He had two throws in this one that were complete head-scratchers, and the Wildcats (2-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) made him pay dearly.Linebacker Jordan Wright, cleared to play Thursday after sitting out the opener, made a one-handed catch on Richardson's pass to the flat late in the second quarter. Will Levis scored three plays later . Richardson's second pick was more egregious. He seemingly misread a defensive alignment and threw a pass to the wide side of the field that Smith easily picked off. Smith returned it down the sideline and had to juke only Richardson to make it to the e nd zone. It was the third of three big plays that gave Kentucky back-to-back wins over Florida (1-1, 0-1) for the first time since 1976-77. Ahead but inconsistent after 30 minutes of play, No. 20 Kentucky needed just 62 seconds to right things and earn a significant win for coach Mark Stoops. Barion Brown returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, Keidron Smith's fumble retu rn less than a minute later set up another score and the Wildcats pulled away to beat Miami (Ohio) 37-13 on Saturday night in the opener for both teams.Stoops' 60th victory tied him with Paul "Bear" Bryant as the Wildcats' winningest coach after 1 0 seasons with the program. Kentucky's longest-tenured coach was happy to win but downplayed the milestone afterward, as he had all week. "You can't put my name in the same (sentence) as Bear Bryant's," Stoops said. "Let's compete for six national champi onships, talk about that. But I am grateful to win that many games, to be here this long." Kentucky certainly needed those game-changing plays to make this win possible for Stoops after leading only 13-10 at halftime behind several missed opportunities d eep in Miami territory. The Wildcats quickly snatched momentum after the break as Brown dashed left, found a seam and turned the corner down the sideline for the big score just 13 seconds in. It started in high school with memorizing wide receivers' routes. Maybe just one for any given game. Talent could take Keidron Smith a pretty long way in those days - to three-star cornerback status and a scholarship to Ole Miss - and so he didn't need much more than that. In time, he came to crave it. Fast forward to this fall, and Smith is finishing his college football career at Kentucky. He's a fifth-year senior and a certified film-room fiend. The film study he used to do in passing has become a passion. "(Film study) slows the game down so much more," Smith said. "It makes the game so much slower, and that allows you to play so much faster." It's a lesson Smith absorbed at Ole Miss and, as importantly, one the Kentucky coaches hope he can sta rt to impart the Cats' younger corners.Though he hopes to set an example for Kentucky's corners, Smith is foremost here to play. He came to UK not merely to follow friend and former roommate Jacquez Jones, the Wildcats linebacker who came from Oxf ord before last season and became a fixture on the UK defense, but because he saw "the opportunity here." After moving from corner to safety last season at Ole Miss, Smith - who also played at nickel back for the Rebels - is back in his original position at Kentucky. A stout 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds, he has the size Mark Stoops favors at the position and saw UK as an ideal schematic fit. "It's basically free agency," Smith said of the transfer portal. Kentucky football left spring practice with a clear need for transfer help in the defensive secondary. The first attempt to address that concern has landed the Wildcats Ole Miss transfer Keidron Smith, who committed to the Wildcats Friday after consideri ng Missouri, Virginia Tech and Miami. "We are very excited to have Keidron join our Wildcat family," UK coach Mark Stoops said in a news release. "He is a veteran player who started and saw a lot of snaps at corner and safety in the Southeastern Conferen ce. He's versatile, he's intelligent and he's mature. I like his competitive nature and he's a great addition to our defense." Smith, who split time at three different positions in the Ole Miss secondary across four years in Oxford, totaled 65 tackles an d two interceptions last season.The West Palm Beach, Florida native will use the extra year of eligibility granted all players in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic to play as a super senior for Kentucky next season. Smith is the sixth transfer to commit to Kentucky since the end of the 2021 season, following Virginia Tech wide receiver Tayvion Robinson, Auburn offensive guard Tashawn Manning, Ohio State defensive lineman Darrion Henry-Young, Iowa quarterback Deuce Hogan and Alabama wide receiver Javon Baker. - Courier Journal
