ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 22. Jarrett Patterson, C, Notre Dame, Senior. Notable career stat: Has never allowed a sack. Last year's ranking: NR. The three-year starter and 2021 captain has not been responsible for a sack in his college career, a big reason why he ranks No. 2 on Mel Kiper Jr.'s list of draft-eligible centers for 2023. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Patterson will anchor one of the nation's best lines, and should push to become Notre Dame's first Rimington Trophy winner. - ESPN.com

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Monday that offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson was questionable for the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish's opener against No. 2 Ohio State. Patterson has been dealing with an injury to his right foot for about two weeks. Freeman said he did expect the fifth-year senior to practice this week. "We'll see as we get closer to game-time where he'll be, but I would say he's questionable right now," Freeman said. Patterson was one of the best centers in the country last year for Notre Dame and a preseason All-American. He was listed as the starter at left guard on the Irish's first depth chart of the season, released Monday. Patterson's injury gave Zeke Correll an opportunity to earn the start at center. - AP College Football

Notre Dame's offensive line has been hit hard by injuries in recent practices and had a limited number of bodies during Friday's session. Senior left guard Jarrett Patterson wheeled into practice with his right lower leg on a scooter and in a cast. Marcus Freeman said Patterson would miss about 10 days of practice and his status for the Irish season opener at Ohio State on Sept. 3 is questionable. Aamil Wagner, Caleb Johnson, Michael Carmody and Tosh Baker were also unavailable among Notre Dame's lineman group. Andrew Kristofic, who took most of the first-team reps at left guard, and Joe Alt, each were seen limping after separate plays during practice, but remained in drills throughout the day. - South Bend Tribune

Four months after downplaying the possibility due to timing issues, Notre Dame offensive line guru Harry Hiestand found a way to move All-America candidate Jarrett Patterson from center to left guard after all. Fully recovered from early March surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle on the left side of his chest, Patterson worked exclusively at left guard on Friday as the Irish opened August training camp. Redshirt junior Zeke Correll, who filled in at center this spring, remained the first-team center until heat exhaustion ended his practice a few periods early. Even when Correll went out, it was redshirt freshman Pat Coogan that jumped in as the first-team center while Patterson (6-foot-4, 310 pounds) remained at guard.

Correll, a Cincinnati product who stands 6-3 and 308 pounds, opened last season as the starting left guard but gave way after five games to Andrew Kristofic. "You've got to look at that unit in terms of all five, not as individual pieces," Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said. "J-Patt being at guard, we feel like, gives those five guys up front the best chance to be successful." Patterson, signed originally as a left tackle in 2018 out of Laguna Hills, Calif., has started at center in 34 of Notre Dame's last 38 games. Patterson, a graduate who spurned NFL interest to play another season, missed the final four games in 2020 after suffering a Lisfranc fracture in his foot. Correll spelled him for two of those games in 2020. Midway through spring practice, Hiestand expressed disappointment at not being able to see Patterson work at guard. "I would want to get him some guard work, just for him personally, but it would've been this spring," Hiestand said. "But not now. We'll be right up against it, getting him ready." - South Bend Tribune

Even Notre Dame's most experienced offensive lineman, Jarrett Patterson, will be trying a new position. Patterson, who started 21 games at center the past two seasons, will have a chance to become the next great left tackle for Kelly at Notre Dame. But Patterson's switch to left tackle, where he initially was positioned as a freshman reserve, will have to wait until he's completely recovered from a surgery on his left foot that ended his 2020 season. Outland Trophy finalist Liam Eichenberg, who started the last 38 games at left tackle for Notre Dame, thinks the transition will be easy for the 6-foot-5, 305-pound Patterson.

"Football comes natural to him," Eichenberg said. "First camp as a freshman, he was a left tackle behind me and he was amazing. It'll be like nothing ever happened. I don't expect there to be a drop-off at all. "It'll be like I'm still there. It'll be like Mike (McGlinchey) was still there. Jarrett will be one of the next greats. He's a great center and him moving out to tackle, it'll make people realize that he's even a better player than most people think." That's promising praise for Patterson. Offensive line coach Jeff Quinn's comfort level with moving Patterson to left tackle was also predicated on the success junior-to-be Zeke Correll had while playing center when Patterson was injured at the end of last season. The 6-3, 295-pound Correll started two games and can be penciled in as the starting center for 2021. - South Bend Tribune

2020 ALL-ACC FOOTBALL THIRD TEAM (COACHES/MEDIA): C - Jarrett Patterson, Notre Dame, 73,...Center Jarrett Patterson, a member of both the Outland and Rimington Trophy Watch Lists, earned a third-team nod after only being able to play in eight games this season. Sidelined due to injury, Patterson's performance in those eight games was impressive, and he finishes 2020 with 21-career starts under his belt. - Notre Dame Football

Notre Dame starting center Jarrett Patterson is expected to miss the remainder of the season, according to multiple reports Monday. Irish Illustrated first reported Patterson will need surgery on a left foot injury that occurred in Saturday's 45-31 win at Boston College. Notre Dame officials had not confirmed the news by Monday evening. The loss of Patterson, a junior, is a blow to the middle of the Irish offensive line. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Patterson started the previous 21 games at center for what has become one of the best offensive lines in the country. No. 2 Notre Dame (8-0, 7-0 ACC) entered this week, which the Irish have off, ranked No. 17 in the FBS in rushing offense with 234 yards per game. Only 19 FBS teams that have played at least five games have allowed fewer sacks per game than Notre Dame's 1.75. - South Bend Tribune
