  01/02/21 - CB Zech McPhearsonrSr/2021, Texas Tech, 5-11, 196 (DS#38 CB) + More +

Zech McPhearson will try to cash in on the breakout football season he put together in 2020. The Texas Tech cornerback announced Thursday he is declaring for the NFL draft. McPhearson is tied for second in the Big 12 with four interceptions - Oklahoma safety Tre Norwood took the lead in Wednesday's Cotton Bowl with his fifth - and McPhearson is fifth in the conference in passes defended with 10. The senior from Columbia, Maryland, also scored touchdowns with returns of a blocked field goal at Iowa State and a fumble against West Virginia. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

  10/24/20 - CB Zech McPhearsonrSr/2021, Texas Tech, 5-11, 196 (DS#38 CB) + More +

Cornerback Zech McPhearson returned a fumble 56 yards for a touchdown with 8:44 left to lift Texas Tech to a 34-27 victory over West Virginia on Saturday night. West Virginia's Sam James caught a short pass from Jarret Doege but fumbled on a hit from Jacob Morganstern. McPhearson, a graduate transfer from Penn State, picked up the ball and went the length of the field untouched. West Virginia punted from near midfield on its next series and got the ball back one last time at its 17 with 42 seconds left and no timeouts. Doege moved the Mountaineers past midfield but his pass into the end zone as the clock ran out fell incomplete. Texas Tech (2-3, 1-3 Big 12) snapped a three-game home losing streak to the Mountaineers (3-2, 2-2). McPhearson’s heroics made a winner out of Henry Colombi, who was making his first career start. Colombi, a junior transfer from Utah State, was named the starter a week ago after he replaced Alan Bowman midway through an Oct. 10 loss at Iowa State. Colombi completed 22 of 28 passes for 168 yards and one score. He also ran for 40 yards and another TD. West Virginia's Leddie Brown scored on two short runs but was held to 77 yards, well below his 129-yard average. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

2020 WUERFFEL TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Zech McPhearson, Texas Tech, senior, defensive back,...In only a year at Texas Tech, McPhearson has become a frequent contributor in Texas Tech's community service initiatives as he has regularly taken part in visits to local children's hospitals as well as elementary school reading program. After most area schools closed due to COVID-19, McPhearson recorded videos to encourage those same elementary school students who were adjusting to a learn-from-home model. On the field, McPhearson instantly became a leader for a young Texas Tech defense a year ago as he was one of four Red Raiders to start in all 12 games. He totaled 51 tackles (42 solo), including 2.5 that went for a loss, from his cornerback spot, while also sharing the team high with five pass breakups. - Texas Tech Football
