Caylin Newton is carving his own path at Auburn. Now, he's spreading his own message and writing his own story. The Auburn receiver and younger brother of Cam Newton posted a lengthy message to Instagram on Wednesday before practice, opening up about his Blount's disease diagnosis and his battles with insecurity and self-doubt. "It takes courage to admit any of your insecurities, whatsoever," he said early in the post, which garnered more than 6,500 likes in just a few hours. Newton is in his second season at Auburn. He transferred to Auburn and moved to wide receiver after a successful three-year career as the quarterback at Howard.

Newton made a name for himself at Howard, where he was named MEAC Rookie of the Year and starred in an epic upset win over UNLV. He graduated in three years from the prestigious university before coming to Auburn as a graduate transfer. He entered last season as a redshirt junior and enters this season as a senior but with a COVID-19 waiver year in pocket. - Opelika-Auburn News

Caylin Newton stepped onto brother Cam's old stomping grounds this summer when Caylin signed up with Auburn as a graduate transfer walk-on, after a successful stint striking out on his own at Howard. Caylin led Howard at quarterback and made a name for himself there, winning MEAC Rookie of the Year and making history as part of an epic upset victory over UNLV. But, of course, Cam casts a monumental shadow across the Plains. His statue stands outside the stadium, and at Auburn, Caylin is back to trying to make his own name again in the place where his brother's legacy will hang over everything he does. Still, at least within the confines of Auburn's practices closed off from the outside world, Caylin is doing just that. He's quickly building his own reputation. "I've just been so impressed with his attitude, his physicality, and really probably more than anything his want-to," Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said of Caylin last week. "He's desperate to help the team, so that's been really good from him."

That word, 'physical,' tracks with the rest of the wide receivers who have welcomed Caylin in. So does another word, 'natural' - as Caylin has made a quick switch to receiver even after playing quarterback at a high level in college football. "I wouldn't have believed he played quarterback at Howard because he's so physical," Auburn's star receiver, Seth Williams, said Wednesday. "He changed his game to receiver and made a smooth transition. "I feel like he's going to be a good contributor for us because he's got sure hands." - Opelika-Auburn News

Caylin Newton's best opportunity will come at a new position for Auburn -- receiver. Marion believes he can fill a role similar to the ones held by Ryan Davis - the program's all-time receptions leader - and Will Hastings, a former walk-on kicker-turned-NFL receiver, both of whom were shifty slot-type receivers who found success in Malzahn's offense. Caylin Newton could also provide some veteran depth at quarterback, which will be more important than ever while trying to navigate a season in the midst of a pandemic, as well as provide the Tigers with another Wildcat option following the February departure of Boobee Whitlow, and as a potential return man on special teams. "Well the thing about Caylin, you got to look at his career before he got here at Howard, what he did," Malzahn said.

"He was a record-setting quarterback at Howard and leading that team, what they did…. He's got a lot of winner in him…. He has a lot of intangibles. He's a really smart guy. He's been a quarterback. He's a leader. I think he's going to have a chance to help us in a lot of different ways, and not just at wide receiver, but some other ways too." While Caylin Newton could become a Swiss Army Knife of sorts for Auburn this season if he can crack the two-deep depth chart, Marion is confident in what his former protégé can bring to the receiver position despite never really playing there before. Marion knows what it takes to excel as a receiver in Malzahn's offense, too, as he set records at the position while playing for Malzahn at Tulsa from 2007-08 and then developed his Go-Go offense based on the same principles as Malzahn's Hurry Up, No Huddle system. - Birmingham News

As a freshman in 2017, Newton led Howard to one of the biggest upsets in college football history when the Bison stunned UNLV with a season-opening, 43-40 road victory after entering as 45-point underdogs. He had hoped to capitalize on Howard's 7-4 campaign, but the Bison won just six games total in 2018 and 2019. Newton threw for 5,876 yards, 41 touchdowns and 32 interceptions in 25 games at Howard. Newton will be a preferred walk-on at Auburn, according to al.com. In March, he posted video of himself on Instagram working out as a wide receiver, hinting that he's open to a position change. "Need me to catch? I gotchu," Newton posted. "Need me to run? I gotchu. Need me to throw? I gotchu. I'm ya guy!"

Cecil Newton said in October that his son would consider a school with a strong master's program in sports management or marketing. "He won't play football all his life," he said. "He's got to have something else, too." "I know football's not going to last forever, so I want to be in a situation where I'm going to get the best education," Newton told the Undefeated in October. "While I'm playing football, I want to be able to compete at the highest level and compete for a championship." - Washington Post

Caylin Newton, the younger brother of former Heisman winner Cam Newton, is following in his brother's footsteps to finish off his college career. Newton announced on Twitter on Friday night that he will transfer to Auburn after starting his career at FCS program Howard. Auburn is already at the 85-player scholarship limit for the upcoming season, so Newton -- who entered the transfer portal in October -- will be a preferred walk-on for the Tigers. He will be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer. - AL.com
