2021 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Ronnie Rivers, RB,...Kevin Atkins (DL), Levelle Bailey (LB), Josh Kelly (WR), Arron Mosby (DE) and Ronnie Rivers (RB) earned honorable mention recognition by the conference. Each Bulldog represented helped lead Fresno State to a 9-3 record, including wins over two ranked teams, both on the road. It was the first time Fresno State defeated two Top 25 opponents in a season since 2004, and the first time both wins came on the road in the 100 year history of the program. - Fresno State Football

  08/30/21 - RB Ronnie RiversrSr/2022, Fresno State, 5-08, 198 (DS#44 RB) + More +

In January, Ronnie Rivers announced on Twitter that he would be returning for one more season with the Fresno State Bulldogs. After all, there was some unfinished business left for Rivers. Heading into the Bulldogs' opener, Rivers shared the record with Anthony Daigle, who played from 1991-1993, for the most career touchdowns in Fresno State history. But it didn't take long for the fifth-year running back to break that record, as Rivers caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Haener to score touchdown No. 45, en route to the Bulldogs' 45-0 shutout win over the UConn Huskies on Saturday afternoon.

It came at a special moment as fans were finally allowed back into Bulldog Stadium for the first time since 2019. Among the crowd was his family, which included his father, Fresno State football hall of famer Ron Rivers. "This is my last season," Rivers said. "To be able to play in front of Bulldog fans again was great. I know a lot of guys were excited and brought the energy. We can't wait until the next home game when they're out there again." Haener said he was waiting to throw the ball to Rivers for his record-breaking touchdown. Rivers missed his chance last season during a game against Nevada. He ran the ball into the endzone for what would have been the touchdown No. 45 for him, but officials called the play back due to an illegal block by Haener. "I'm happy for Ronnie," Haener said. "He works really hard on his craft and he's really fun to be around." - The Collegian

  07/26/21 - RB Ronnie RiversrSr/2022, Fresno State, 5-08, 198 (DS#44 RB) + More +

Fresno State running back Ronnie Rivers announced his decision to return for a second senior season on social media, and since has not talked much about it. There obviously is a lot out there for the Bulldogs' back, who is close to setting a number of school records including career touchdowns and the potential for another championship season. But from a family dynamic, what is more important: surpassing the rushing total racked up by his father, Ron, who was the all-time leading rusher at Fresno State before playing in the NFL for six seasons; or putting up numbers to a point that his little brother Devon, who just completed a dynamic sophomore season at Heritage High in Brentwood, will find them to be out of reach no matter where he decides to play his college football? "I would say both," Rivers said on Thursday at the Mountain West Conference media days.

Both at this point are possible in a Fresno State offense that returns more than 90% of its passing, rushing and receiving production. Ronnie Rivers, who was the only Fresno State player selected to the Mountain West preseason all-conference team this year, needs 844 rushing yards to match the 3,473 his father churned out from 1991 to '93. He already has scored 44 touchdowns, tied with Anthony Daigle for the most in school history, and with a solid season can end up in the Bulldogs' Top 5 for career rushing touchdowns, rushing yards and all-purpose yards. Rivers has put up those numbers despite splitting time his first two seasons with Jordan Mims and Josh Hokit - he has only 42.4% of the rushing plays by Bulldogs' running backs over his career. - Fresno Bee

Fresno State could be a surprise team in 2021 with that offense. Rivers, who led the conference with 136.3 all-purpose yards per game last season, has landed on watch lists for the Maxwell Award and the Doak Walker Award and the Bulldogs return more than 90% of their rushing and receiving production. They might have to win high-scoring games, just as they did in 2013 when going 11-2 despite allowing 30.3 points per game. But they are capable with better health and continuity up front. Fresno State had the same starting lineup on the offensive line its first four games of 2020, but started different groups in its final two games, a recurring theme over the past two seasons. In 2019, the Bulldogs had four players start at least one game at left guard and three start at least one game at left tackle, center and right guard. "I really think we're going to have a big jump," DeBoer said. "Not only do I think we'll have more depth, but I think that our top-end guys are another year older." - Fresno Bee

  01/10/21 - RB Ronnie RiversrSr/2022, Fresno State, 5-08, 198 (DS#44 RB) + More +

Fresno State running back Ronnie Rivers said on Friday that he would return for a second senior season of football, taking advantage of eligibility relief granted all fall sports student-athletes due to the coronavirus pandemic and bolstering a Bulldogs' offense that last season led the Mountain West Conference in total offense and was second in scoring offense. Rivers also will have a chance to move up the Bulldogs' all-time rushing and scoring lists and finish his career as one of the most prolific skill position players in their history.

The senior running back ended a truncated 2020 season with 44 career touchdowns, tied with Anthony Daigle atop the Bulldogs' Top 10 list. He also is tied for third with Daigle for career rushing touchdowns with 35, four behind all-time leader Ryan Mathews; and seventh on the all-time rushing list with 2,629 yards, a 1,000-yard season from moving past his father, Ron Rivers, who is second with 3,473 yards. - Fresno Bee

Fresno State senior running back Ronnie Rivers' status will be evaluated day-to-day as the Bulldogs prepare for their final regular-season game in this COVID-19 truncated college football season, coach Kalen DeBoer said Monday. The senior running back, who is one away from setting the school career touchdowns record, suffered a lower leg injury Saturday night at the end of a 66-yard scoring run in the third quarter in a 37-26 loss at Nevada that was negated by an illegal block penalty.

"He's going to be day-to-day throughout the course of the week," DeBoer said in a weekly Zoom news conference. "It's not something where I feel he would be out for the rest of the season, especially if it was a long season ahead or anything like that. "I know he's going to do everything he can with his rehab day-to-day to make sure he's doing the best he can to get on the football field Saturday. It's just unfortunate the effort he made on that play was for naught because it was a huge turning point." Rivers is a huge part of the Bulldogs' offense, leading the team with 99 rushing plays, 27 pass receptions, 154.6 yards from scrimmage per game and nine touchdowns. - Fresno Bee

Fresno State running back Ronnie Rivers, at Utah State, became the first player in school history with 2,500 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards while tying the school record for career touchdowns. He has rushed for 2,561 yards in his Fresno State career and caught 107 passes for 1,019 yards and, remember, he missed two games as a true freshman in 2017 and three games as a sophomore in 2018 with injuries. Rivers can set that career touchdowns record on Saturday against the Wolf Pack as well as move up on a number of other career lists. - Fresno Bee

For the second consecutive week, Fresno State relied on Ronnie Rivers to lead the 'Dogs to victory as they improved to 2-1 on the young, pandemic-afflicted season. The senior running back was the best player on the field in Fresno State's 40-27 road-win over UNLV Saturday as he led the Bulldogs in both rushing and receiving. Rivers rushed for 133 yards and 3 touchdowns and grabbed 6 receptions for 99 yards and 1 touchdown. Rivers averaged 9.28 yards every time he touched the ball. In head coach Kalen DeBoer's words, Rivers "just understands the situation so well, doesn't panic." "It didn't all happen right away," DeBoer said. "I think the key was that the game kind of came to him. He always finds ways, and it seems like his shiftiness early on was a key. And he moved the chains at times. He just understands the situation so well, doesn't panic - a little penetration on some plays, didn't panic, just trust who he is and understand where the blocks are coming from."

If you ask Rivers why he was successful, though, it's all humility from him. "I would say the guys that I'm playing around, my linemen all the way to my quarterback and the receivers blocking on the outside - I can't do anything without those guys," Rivers said. "All the success I had on the field today is because of them, and I couldn't have asked for anything else." With his 4 touchdown performance, Rivers moved into second place all-time in career touchdowns at Fresno State with 43, one shy of the leader, running back Anthony Daigle. - San Joaquin Valley Sun and Valley Future Foundation

Ronnie Rivers scored four touchdowns, Chris Gaston made two interceptions and Fresno State defeated UNLV 40-27 on Saturday. Rivers rushed for 133 yards and three scores on 19 carries and caught six passes for a career-high 99 yards and another score. He has scored in 11 consecutive games. Rivers' 10-yard scoring run on the first play of the fourth quarter snapped a 27-27 tie and an interception by Gaston led to Cesar Silva's field goal and a 37-27 lead. Jake Haener's 35-yard run led to another Silva field goal with under two minutes remaining. Another Gaston interception ended UNLV's hopes.

Rivers' 16-yard TD run early in the third quarter gave the Bulldogs a 27-17 lead but the Rebels (0-3, 0-3 Mountain West) got a field goal from Daniel Gutierrez and Max Gilliam's 71-yard TD run to tie it. Gilliam had a combined 299 yards offense and two touchdowns but had the two interceptions plus a fumble. Jake Haener passed for 164 yards and a score and ran for 79 yards plus a touchdown for the Bulldogs (2-1, 2-1).   Senior running back Ronnie Rivers did a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs in their second straight home game. Rivers scored three total touchdowns, finding the end zone on a 13-yard catch in the first quarter and breaking off a 32-yard run in the second period. On that scoring dash, Rivers took a short toss, broke a tackle and scampered into the end zone down the home sideline. "That guy's a beast," DeBoer said. Rivers, who is listed at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, is now fourth all-time in school history with 31 rushing touchdowns.

Against Colorado State, Rivers showed why he was a preseason All-Mountain West Conference running back. One of the conference's most versatile players, Rivers lined up at punt returner, running back, receiver and even at quarterback. In the third quarter, Rivers took a direct snap and scored on a one-yard run to hand the Bulldogs a 31-10 advantage. Rivers accounted for 164 yards from scrimmage (95 yards rushing, 69 yards receiving) on 28 offensive touches. He also had eight yards on punt returns. "It's a great feeling," Rivers said. "I'm prepared to do whatever to help us get a 'Dub." - Visalia Times-Delta

Ronnie Rivers scored two third-quarter touchdowns as Fresno State scored 24 consecutive points, Cesar Silva made a 37-yard field as time expired, and the Bulldogs beat Hawaii 41-38 on Saturday night. Rivers finished with 19 carries for 103 yards. Jorge Reyna was 17-of-27 passing for 188 yards and a score and added 11 carries for 96 yards for Fresno State (4-4, 2-2 Mountain West). The Bulldogs trailed 24-14 at halftime but scored on each of their first four second-half possessions -- including touchdown runs of 44 and 4 yards by Rivers -- to take a 14-point lead when Reyna hit Jared Rice for a 26-yard TD with 10:06 left.

Chevan Cordeiro, who replaced starting quarterback Cole McDonald midway through the fourth quarter, connected with Nick Mardner for a 50-yard gain to the 3 and, on the next play, Miles Rees scored on a 3-yard run to trim Hawaii's deficit to 38-31 with 2:13 remaining. The Rainbow Warriors (5-4, 2-3) recovered the ensuing onside kick and Cordeiro's 10-yard touchdown run tied it with 65 seconds to play. Reyna had a 17-yard run, hit Rice for gains of 5 and 9 yards and then ran for 11 yards to move the Bulldogs into Hawaii territory. After back-to-back incomplete passes, Rivers ripped off a 13-yard run to the 20 that set up Silva's winning field goal. McDonald was 21-of-42 passing for 275 and a touchdown with one interception and added a 6-yard TD run. Cordeiro completed 5 of 9 for 71 yards and had four carries for 33 yards. - Fresno State/AP College Football
