2022 ALL-BIG TEN FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): WR Charlie Jones, Purdue,...Jones continues the tradition of First Team All-B1G wide receivers under Jeff Brohm, joining Rondale Moore (2018) and David Bell (2020, 2021). The Iowa transfer has been the best receiver in the conference all season long, leading the league and ranking Top 5 nationally in receptions (3rd-97), touchdowns (3rd-12) and receiving yards (5th-1,199). He is one of only two receivers to crack the nation's Top 10 in all three categories.

Jones is the only Big Ten receiver since 2000 to produce five games with at least 10 catches and 100 yards in a single season. He has recorded seven 100-yard games this year, including five in B1G play, tying a school record with four other Boilermakers: David Bell (2021), Rondale Moore (2018), John Standeford (2002) and Steve Griffin (1984). In conference action, Jones has hauled in 7.6 receptions per game to go along with 91.0 receiving yards per game to lead the league. He is 108 yards away from setting a new Purdue single-season record for receiving yards. - Purdue Football

Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell and receiver Charlie Jones appear to be in perfect sync. The childhood friends hooked up for three first-half touchdowns in their second college game together, and then watched the rest of the Boilermakers' 56-0 victory over Indiana State on Saturday. Jones caught nine passes for 133 yards in his second straight 100-yard game since transferring to Purdue from Iowa. O'Connell went 17 of 19 for 211 yards and four scores while moving past Scott Campbell and into sixth on the school list for passing TDs. The first walk-on to earn Purdue's starting quarterback job now has 48 TD passes.

The combination of O'Connell and Jones has looked virtually unstoppable so far, connecting 21 times for 286 yards and four scores this season. "I came here, obviously, for the offense and I like what I'm seeing so far," said Jones, who has already matched last season's reception total. "Definitely, it was a good move." The Sycamores (1-1) fell to 0-6 all-time against the Boilermakers (1-1), and it didn't Purdue long to take control. Cam Allen recovered a fumble on the game's first snap and four plays later King Doerue scored on a 4-yard TD run. Jones stiff-armed a defender on his way to a 7-yard TD catch and O'Connell found Paul Piferi for a 26-yard score on the next two series. O'Connell closed out the half with TD passes of 36 and 5 yards to Jones to make it 35-0. - Purdue/AP College Football

Iowa transfer Charlie Jones will help the Boilermakers. A lot. Jones flashed plenty of athletic ability in drills and was involved in the return game. "Charlie can play football," coach Jeff Brohm said. "We're going to use him a lot of different ways on the outside, on the inside and returning kicks. He's got good receiving skills, he can run good routes, and he understands football. He definitely will be a big factor for us." - Journal and Courier

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Charlie Jones, Purdue,...The reigning Rodgers-Dwight Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year, Jones made the move from Iowa to Purdue to provide a spark to the Boilermakers' return game and receiving corps. His 2021 campaign with the Hawkeyes featured 1,251 all-purpose yards, including 920 return yards (635 kick, 285 punt) to rank second in the nation.

In a 33-23 win over Illinois, Jones took a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Along with being named the best returner in the Big Ten, Jones collected first team all-conference honors. Jones caught 21 passes for 323 yards, averaging 15.4 yards per catch last season. Three of those receptions were in the end zone as he led Iowa in touchdown catches. Against Minnesota, Jones went over the century mark with 106 receiving yards to help the Hawkeyes secure the victory. His big game featured a 72-yard touchdown catch in the second half that put Iowa on top for good. - Purdue Football

Two of Purdue's top wide receivers in 2022 are former Iowa Hawkeyes - Charlie Jones and Tyrone Tracy Jr. Jones announced his move to Purdue in June, and Tracy transferred in December. Jones, the 2021 Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year, had plenty of opportunities with the Hawkeyes on special teams, but his offensive role was more limited. He had 34 of Iowa receivers' 360 targets in 2021, per Pro Football Focus. Purdue's receivers combined to receive 549 targets. Purdue coach Jeff Brohm: "(Jones) wanted to go somewhere and showcase what he could do at receiver… and get a chance to hopefully maybe play at the next level by catching a lot of balls and being in a passing offense." - The Gazette

Spring practice gave Aidan O'Connell and Iowa transfer Tyrone Tracy an opportunity to develop the important quarterback-receiver chemistry that should help Purdue's offense maintain a high level. However, Purdue coach Jeff Brohm has added another Hawkeye receiver transfer to the roster and O'Connell has a built-in history with Charlie Jones, who arrived on campus earlier this month and adds more depth to the position. O'Connell and Jones lived about 10 miles from each other in Illinois and played youth football and baseball together for six years starting in the third grade. O'Connell is from Long Grove, Ill., and Jones grew up in Deerfield. "In football, I basically threw it to him every play," said O'Connell, who attended Stevenson High School. "I know him well. He's a great friend and has already had a lot of success and hopefully, he brings that over here."

O'Connell also likes Jones' versatility to be used at different positions. He'll play a key role in Purdue's special teams since Jones was named Big Ten Returner of the Year last season, but O'Connell said don't be fooled by his statistics as a receiver. "I don't think he's gotten to show as much but he's a skilled receiver with a lot of speed, a lot of quickness and lateral quickness too. He's got great hands," said O'Connell, who will attend the Manning Passing Academy later this month. "Since he's been here, I've gotten to see how he handles himself, how much he watches film, studies the playbook, how he eats and all those things. He handles himself like a professional." - Journal and Courier

The line has formed for replacements at kickoff returner and punt returner for the Iowa football team. In an interview I had this week with Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods for this Sunday's Gazette and this website, Woods talked about who might replace Charlie Jones, the 2021 Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year. Jones is transferring to Purdue to reunite with fellow former Iowa wide receiver Tyrone Tracy for his super senior season.

As for the Hawkeyes..."You have Arland Bruce," said Woods, "who is a really good football player, not just a really good receiver. I think he's a great option. "I think that (defensive back) Connor DeJean is a really good option. I think there's a couple of young guys in Xavier Nwankpa and then also TJ Hall (freshmen defensive backs). "And then (defensive back) Terry Roberts is another guy. I think we have options." The mentioned players "have all expressed interest," Woods said. "And I can tell you that as soon as it became public that someone was leaving our roster, the Big Ten's Defensive Back of the Year (Riley Moss) - I got a text from him that said "Coach, I want to be the returner." Woods said candidates for the positions can use JUGS machines to catch footballs in summer workouts, "but the difficult thing comes when you have to catch it off the foot," which the players won't do until training camp starts in August. - The Gazette

In a jolt to the Iowa football program, wide receiver/kick-returner Charlie Jones has entered the NCAA transfer portal, as first reported by On3 Sports. Jones was the Big Ten's Return Specialist of the Year in 2021 after returning 25 kickoffs for a 25.4-yard average and a touchdown, and 37 punts for a 7.7-yard average. He returned a punt for a TD in 2020. He became the third Hawkeye to ever return both a punt and kickoff for scores.

In addition, he had 21 catches for 323 yards and three touchdowns, including a 72-yard scoring grab against Minnesota. "This is exactly why I came here," Jones said after the game. "I was playing in the MAC, left the scholarship because I knew I could play in the Big Ten. "It was tough on me, tough on my family, but we knew it was worth it. Moments in games like this is exactly why I came here." Jones, who will be a sixth-year senior, was placed on scholarship in December 2020. He announced four months ago that he was returning to Iowa for another season after considering going to the NFL. His return was viewed as a plus for the Hawkeyes. "I have unfinished business to accomplish and look forward to achieving my goals with this team," Jones said at the time on the team's social media accounts. - The Gazette

Hours after incoming freshman defensive back Olando Trader announced he was leaving Iowa's program, a veteran of Iowa's team also left the program. Iowa wide receiver Charlie Jones has entered the NCAA transfer portal, the Register has confirmed. Jones will have one year of eligibility left as he's utilizing his COVID waiver. Jones joined Iowa in 2019 as a transfer from Buffalo and immediately became an impact player. He made his mark early as a return specialist and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2020. This year he began to make his mark at the receiver position.

The Deerfield, Illinois, native recorded 21 catches for 323 yards and tied for a team-best three touchdowns in 2021. He was named Big Ten Conference returner of the year. Toward the end of the last season, Jones expressed that a big factor in his decision to return to college for his senior season would be gaining more film at receiver to pursue his NFL dream. Now it appears that it will happen at another school. - Iowa City Press-Citizen
