  12/23/22 - QB Clayton TunerSr/2023, Houston, 6-3, 220 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Clayton Tune connected with Nathaniel Dell for a 12-yard touchdown with 20 seconds remaining, and Houston rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat Louisiana-Lafayette 23-16 in the Independence Bowl on Friday. The TD pass was Tune's third of the game and 40th of the season, tying him with Western Kentucky's Austin Reed for the most in the nation. Before the winning throw, he completed a 41-yard pass to KeSean Carter on third-and-30 to move Houston into Ragin' Cajuns territory. The Cougars (8-5) never led until that late touchdown as Tune heated up amid unseasonably cold temperatures in northwest Louisiana. It was 25 degrees at kickoff, with a wind chill of 12 degrees. Louisiana-Lafayette (6-7) led 13-0 midway through the second quarter and 16-6 at halftime. Tune, who finished 19 of 28 for 216 yards, led Houston on a 13-play, 70-yard drive to open the second half and hit Dell for a 2-yard touchdown that made it 16-13.

Clinging to a three-point lead, Louisiana stuffed Houston on fourth-and-short at the Ragin’ Cajuns 5-yard line midway through the third quarter, but the Cougars eventually tied the game on Kyle Ramsey's 19-yard field early in the fourth. The Ragin' Cajuns wasted a chance to retake the lead when running back Chris Smith fumbled at the Houston 4. Louisiana-Lafayette, located three hours south of Shreveport, took the opening kick and orchestrated a 15-play, 75-yard drive that ended when tight end Johnny Lumpkin made a dazzling touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. The Cajuns got three field goals in the first half from by Kenneth Almendares (42, 42, and 22 yards). Chandler Fields finished 17 of 25 passing for 169 yards and a touchdown. Tune's first TD toss was a 33-yarder to Carter in the second quarter. Carter finished with 104 yards on three catches, and Dell had six receptions for 44 yards and the two TDs. - Houston/AP College Football

Clayton Tune threw three touchdowns and his last one of the day with 40 seconds left was the game winner when he found Matthew Golden as Houston beat Temple 43-36 on Saturday. Temple managed to reach the Houston (6-4, 4-2 American Athletic Conference) 25-yard line but time expired. Temple (3-7, 1-5) used a 12-play, 73-yard drive that lasted five minutes that ended when E.J. Warner threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Zae Baines with 1:22 remaining to put the Owls up 36-35.

Houston then used a mere 42 seconds to go 71 yards when Tune found found a wide-open Golden who he nearly overthrew. With the win, Houston moved to 12-2 in its last 14 American Athletic Conference matchups dating to the start of the 2021 season, marking the Cougars' best 14-game stretch in league play since replicating the feat from Sept. 2, 2006 - Nov. 4, 2007. Stacy Sneed scored two rushing touchdowns and set a career high with 143 yards on the ground. It was most for a Cougar since Duke Catalon ran for 177 yards at SMU on Oct. 7, 2017. Warner threw for a single-game program-record 486 yards on 42-for-59 passing and had three touchdowns. - Houston/AP College Football

Houston quarterback Clayton Tune leaped over a defender to score on a 13-yard run and the 24th-ranked Cougars escaped with 37-35 victory over UTSA in three overtimes Saturday. Per NCAA rules for a third overtime, Tune's winning run was a 2-point conversion. The Roadrunners were unable to match the score as their final pass floated out of bounds. Houston rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half at the Alamadome to snap UTSA's 10-game home winning streak. After Tune scored on a 1-yard run and threw for the 2-point conversion in the second overtime, Roadrunners quarterback Frank Harris matched the output by running in the conversion after tossing a touchdown pass to De'Corian Clark.

Houston dominated the final quarter, maintaining possession for 10 minutes, 30 seconds in driving 77 yards on 18 plays. The drive ended with Bubba Baxa kicking a 35-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining for a 24-21 lead.   Houston's 100,000-square-foot Football Development Center will serve as the headquarters for the UH football program under head coach Dana Holgorsen. The University of Houston athletic department received an anonymous $10 million gift to help fund construction of the Football Development Center, the school announced Friday. "An eight-figure gift is rare. To have someone who believes in us, our mission, and the direction we're going while entrusting us with a significant gift is humbling," UH vice president for athletics Chris Pezman said. "I cannot express our true appreciation. It's incredibly impactful and it makes a very definitive statement about where we're going and what we're doing." The gift is part of the athletic department's Houston RISE campaign that aims to raise $150 million to upgrade and build facilities as the Cougars enter the Big 12 in July 2023. At a projected cost of $75 million, the 100,000-square-foot facility - to be located on the west side of TDECU Stadium - will serve as the headquarters for the UH football program. Construction is expected to begin this fall. - Houston Chronicle

Local car dealership Chastang Ford has partnered with University of Houston football players Clayton Tune and linebacker Donavan Mutin on a name, image and likeness (NIL) deal, the company announced Tuesday. "Our family bleeds Cougar red, and we are thrilled to connect our brand with individual student athletes who share our brand values," said Patrick Chastang, the general manager and chief operating officer of Chastang Ford.

Tune, a senior quarterback from Carrollton, is entering his final season with the Cougars. Tune posted career highs in passing yards (3,550), passing touchdowns (30) and completion percentage (68.3) as the Cougars went 12-2 and reached the American Athletic Conference championship game.   04/20/22 - QB Clayton TunerSr/2023, Houston, 6-3, 220 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Tune enters his fifth and final season in search of an elusive conference title - and to join some of the Cougars' all-time quarterback greats in the record book. With 7,920 yards, Tune is on pace to join Case Keenum (19,217) and Kevin Kolb (12,964) as the only 10,000-yard passers in school history. His 64 passing touchdowns are currently fifth. Perhaps, most importantly, with the Cougars expected to be among the preseason favorites in the AAC, Tune has a chance to become just the sixth quarterback (Danny Davis, Delrick Brown, Chuck Clements, Kolb and Greg Ward Jr.) in the past 46 years to lead the Cougars to a conference title.

Tune is coming off his best season with career highs in passing yards (3,544), touchdowns (30), completions (287) and completion percentage (68.3 percentage) to lead UH to the AAC championship game and just the third 12-win season in program history. What changed? A hamstring injury. Specifically, Tune developed more of a pocket presence, relying more on a backfield led by Alton McCaskill and 1,300-yard receiver Nathaniel Dell, as he recovered from the injury suffered in Week 2. Rather than rely on instincts and athleticism, Tune began to look at defenses differently and become more comfortable at calling plays at the line. - Houston Chronicle

  12/28/22 - QB Clayton TunerSr/2023, Houston, 6-3, 220 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Clayton Tune and the Houston Cougars punctuated an impressive season with a win in Southeastern Conference country. Jake Herslow caught a 26-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass from Tune with 3:27 left to help lift No. 21 Houston to a 17-13 victory over Auburn on Tuesday in the Birmingham Bowl in front of a mostly orange-and-blue crowd at Protective Stadium. The Cougars (12-2) marched 80 yards in eight plays to cap the third season in program history with at least 12 wins. They snapped a four-game bowl losing streak and won 12 of their final 13 games, the only loss after the opener coming to No. 4 Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference championship game.

Houston coach Dana Holgorsen said this win was similar to "some other ones that we've had this year." "Just a bunch of guys that fight hard and win," Holgorsen said. "Basically, winning this game solidified this 2021 football team at the University of Houston as a great football team." The Tigers (6-7) went in the opposite direction at the end of coach Bryan Harsin's first season. They ended with five straight losses for the first time in 71 years and dropped their third bowl game in a row. Harsin was already looking ahead to, he hopes, better things. "Nobody's going to go in there and just hang their head and say, ‘Well, this is just how it is,' " Harsin said. "We're going to change it. We're going to fix it, and we're going to get better. "I mean, there is no Plan B. There's Plan A, and we're here to make this work." Game MVP Tune completed 26 of 40 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns with an interception while also rushing for 43 yards. Nathaniel Dell caught 10 passes for 150 yards, while Alton McCaskill ran for 66 yards and caught a touchdown pass. - Houston/AP College Football

"I feel like everyone has raised their level," Tune said. "We're starting to click. It's been fun." McCaskill got his third rushing TD from 8 yards out to make it 54-42 with 2:27 to play. The Cougars (8-1, 6-0 American Athletic Conference) have won eight in a row for the first time since 2016.

Houston star defensive back and kick returner Marcus Jones was shaken up midway through the third but returned later in the quarter. He wasn't on the field for part of the fourth period. There was no update postgame on Jones' injury. Brian Battie had two 100-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns and a 29-yard TD run to help South Florida (2-7, 1-4) take a 28-26 halftime lead. Battie, who has three 100-yard kickoff returns this year, brought back the opening kick for a score and went the distance again with 2:16 left in the second quarter. "It's one of the best feelings ever," Battie said of his score 13 seconds into the game. Houston coach Dana Holgorsen called the game "nuts, on all accounts." "I don't want to sit here and act like I'm mad because we just won our eighth game in a row and won a conference game on the road," Holgorsen said. "There's a lot of things that we're going to have to clean up. At the end of the day, the difference was Clayton Tune." - Houston/AP College Football

UH quarterback Clayton Tune was sharp in last year's season finale, throwing for 393 yards and a career-best four touchdowns in a 56-41 loss to Navy. Clayton Tune's No. 3 jersey underwent a minor alteration this summer. A "C" patch was sewn into the top right corner of his football jersey, identifying Tune as one of the University of Houston's team-elected captains for this season. "It means a lot," Tune, set to begin a season as the Cougars' starting quarterback for the first time, said Wednesday during a Zoom call with reporters. "I don't take it lightly. I think it's a testament of the work I've put in for guys to vote for me to be a captain. It's a great honor." It's not uncommon for a quarterback to be selected a captain, although it's not a given. Tune's selection after only nine career starts over the last two seasons shows how quickly he has taken a leadership role and earned the respect of teammates. "He's got the ear of the team, the respect of the team," coach Dana Holgorsen said. - Houston Chronicle
