Blue Adams admits the standard he holds his players to is an ever-moving target. "The standard is kind of like a white unicorn, or something like that," Adams, Oregon State secondary coach, said with a smile Thursday. "It's imaginary. It's something that we talk about, we're gonna work our tails off to get it. We'll probably never catch it, but it's fun chasing it." The most tangible way to describe what Adams wants out of the Beavers' defensive backs is consistency and an obsessive drive to improve the mselves and those around them. If they do that, then the rest will take of itself, he believes.In newcomer Elijah Jones, a senior transfer from Kansas, Adams sees a player who could be an X factor for the Beavers this season and potentially play a t the next level. But before any of that happens, Adams wants to see the burning desire that is a prerequisite for all of his players on a more regular basis. "He's talented. He is a talented dude," Adams said of Jones. "I'm still waiting on him to decid e how good or how great he is going to be, though. I'm just waiting on him at the moment. Like I said, he shows flashes. But that consistency, we've got to definitely work on." It didn't take former Kansas starting cornerback Elijah Jones long to go in one end of the NCAA's transfer portal and come out on the other. Jones announced Wednesday, three days after his name appeared in the portal as a graduate transfer, that he has c ommitted to play for Oregon State this coming fall. Jones, a senior starter at KU in 2020, could have returned for one more go-round with the Jayhawks this year if he so chose, thanks to the NCAA's blanket waiver for fall sports athletes that provides an extra year of eligibility. At Oregon State, Jones seems likely to replace Nahshon Wright, a starting corner for the Beavers this past season who entered the NFL draft. - Lawrence Journal World

The Kansas football program won't be able to bring back starting cornerback Elijah Jones, who made public on Sunday his plans to enter his name into the NCAA's transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Jones, like so many other Jayhawks who have sought to play elsewhere in 2021, was a senior this past year, and could've potentially returned to KU for a bonus season thanks to the NCAA's blanket waiver for an extra year of eligibility. Arguably one of the Jayhawks' most important defenders in 2020, Jones st arted at cornerback in each of the final eight games of the season. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound defensive back from Cape Coral, Fla., made a lot of headway in what proved to be his last year with the program, after redshirting in 2018 and playing only as a b ackup in seven games in 2019. - KUsports

Elijah Jones' responsibilities within the Kansas football defense have become a lot more extensive this summer. Now in his third year with the program, the cornerback who joined the Jayhawks as a junior college transfer in 2018 could find himself in a st arting role this fall, after playing infrequently as a reserve in 2019. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back from Cape Coral, Fla., thinks his game has developed enough since the end of his redshirt junior year that he'll be able to not only get on the field more as a senior, but also execute at a consistent enough level to maintain his spot."I've just got to stay mature, stay level-headed," Jones said during a video conference with reporters this week. "Keep focused and keep doing my job every single play. Keep going out there and making plays and just listen to what my coach has got going for me out there." That coach Jones referenced is Chevis Jackson, the one-time LSU standout entering his second season working for his former head coach, L es Miles. "Coach Jackson is showing us and teaching us the ropes," Jones said, "and showing us how to do that since he's been in our shoes before." - Lawrence Journal World
