Joey McGuire says Marquis "Muddy" Waters can be an NFL draft pick if the Texas Tech defensive back reaches his potential in 2022. That was Waters' plan last season: Transfer to Tech, put up impressive stats and game tape and be in an NFL training camp at this very moment. Bijan Robinson spoiled the plan. In last year's Big 12 opener, Waters tried to arm tackle Texas' 220-pound running back and suffered a grade-three tear of a pectoral muscle. He underwent surgery the next week and missed the last nine g ames of the season. Now he's back on the field for the Red Raiders, trying to do as he intended at this time last year. So far, so good. At the end of spring, new defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter called Waters probably the team's most productive player on defense "as far as a guy making explosive plays, intercepting the football, getting sacks, forcing fumbles."Waters, 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, is playing Star, which, depending on circumstances, can be a safety, a nickel cornerback or an outside linebacker. "He's a dynamic football player," DeRuyter said. "He's a heck of a football player. Really excited about his potential in our defense. I told him, I think he's got the ability - if our coaches and I can get it out of him - to be an all-confe rence type of player." For all the time he missed last year, Waters is likely to make up for it this year. Based on what McGuire has seen, the sixth-year senior from Delray Beach, Florida, is going to fit a lot of job descriptions. "He's one that's going to be really interesting," the Tech head coach said, "because depending on the packages we go to, I don't know if you want to take him off the field. I think he can play the boundary safety, the free safety. "He reminds me of the Jalen Pitre kid that Ba ylor had that just got drafted in the second round. Tearing that pec last year hurt him. Waters didn't have the first season at Texas Tech that he wanted due to injury. His singular interception in four games as a Red Raider was returned for a touchdown against Florida International. It was a glimpse of what he has proven to be capable of. W aters intercepted three passes and broke up 18 in four seasons at Duke. The Texas Tech secondary adjusted well to his absence last season. Tech signed no defensive back recruits over the winter, but has since added one walk-on and three transfers. Two of the transfers (Rayshad Williams and Malik Dunlap) are waiting for a waiver approval by the NCAA, but the Waters comes in with immediate el igibility after having already graduated. Waters spent four years at Duke - three as a primary starter at safety. During his time with the Blue Devils, the veteran gained plenty of experience on his way to filling up the stat sheet. His first game in the scarlet and black will be his 50th of his career as a collegiate athlete and his first snap will be his 2,870th. In the previous 49 games, he became a crucial part of the Blue Devils' plan to stop the run as he accumulated 234 tackles, 13 for loss, a sa ck and seven quarterback pressures. In addition, Waters contributed to the fifth-best pass defense in the ACC in 2020 by adding seven pass deflections, to give him 21 for his career. Among the few defensive starters who won't return for Texas Tech in 2021 is safety Thomas Leggett, a senior who declined the extra year of eligibility available to all NCAA players. The Red Raiders might have already landed Leggett's replacement, or at l east a key piece for the secondary. Marquis Waters, a three-year starting safety at Duke and one of the Blue Devils' top three tacklers for three years in a row, announced Monday he is coming to Texas Tech as a graduate transfer. He started 35 games for the Blue Devils. To put that in Tech terms, that's three fewer than Jack Anderson and DaMarcus Fields and one fewer than Eli Howard.Waters checks a couple of boxes that Tech coach Matt Wells either likes or has been forced into: He arrives via the transfer portal and he helps the Red Raiders be "old" in terms of experience.
