 Deslin Alexandre, Pittsburgh, Player News

After a busy collegiate career on and off the field, former Pitt defensive end Deslin Alexandre was named the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year at a ceremony Thursday night in Frisco, Texas. The honor is annually presented by former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten to the FBS player "who best demonstrates an outstanding record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship." Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford and Oregon offensive lineman Alex Forsyth were the other finalists. "I am honored to present the sixth annual Collegiate Man of the Year to Deslin Alexandre," Witten said. "He is a great leader and a role model for young athletes. He came to the U.S. from Haiti at a young age and overcame a lot of challenges to become a great player and leader, both on campus and in the community. He is a perfect example of what a college student-athlete can be."

Alexandre was a two-time team captain and three-year starter at Pitt. He also was a three-time member of the All-ACC Academic football team. He earned his bachelor's degree in communication and is pursuing an MBA in Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. He worked just as tirelessly in the community, devoting time to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, literacy promotion and Divine Mercy Parish's historic "Red Door" program that provides meals and clothing for the homeless. Perhaps his most impressive contribution was raising $50,000 through his "5th Down Campaign," whose goal was to build awareness and mobilize resources for the impoverished children of Haiti, his native nation. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

For the first time in nearly two decades, "College GameDay" is coming to Pittsburgh. Pitt announced Thursday the popular ESPN college football preview show will originate from the North Shore for the Panthers' Sept. 1 showdown with rival West Virginia at Acrisure Stadium. It marks the first time the show has set up shop here - or any Pitt game for that matter - since Sept. 3, 2005, when the Panthers dropped a 42-21 home decision against Notre Dame. And it will be the third time the Panthers have served as hosts overall. The show also appeared here when Pitt upset Virginia Tech - ranked No. 5 at the time - in November 2003.

West Virginia has played host to GameDay twice previously but never for a Backyard Brawl. The Mountaineers last played in a game highlighted by the show in 2017, when they dropped a 31-24 decision against No. 8 TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. "It's a great opportunity for our program," said Pitt's Deslin Alexandre at ACC media day Thursday. "Being a college football player, a lot of us have that same goal of playing on 'College GameDay.' I'm excited for us and for our program...That's a huge stage. And we're excited to win that game." - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Inside Pitt's UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the South Side, a video screen displays the final score of Pitt's Sept. 18, 2021, game against Western Michigan, which the Panthers lost 44-41. The loss didn't cost the Panthers the ACC title, but it serves as a reminder of what happens when a team doesn't play its best. Pitt rallied from that loss to win its first ACC title, but the redshirt senior duo of defensive end Deslin Alexandre and offensive tackle Carter Warren don't want a repeat of last season's Western Michigan debacle.

"In the grand scheme of things, we won the ACC championship," Alexandre said. "But a game like Western Michigan, where we didn't dot our I's or cross our T's, is a game that shows up even after you win the ACC championship. We want to make sure something like that doesn't happen again." Alexandre said starting fast, even in summer workouts and the first day of fall practice, is key. The Panthers open the season by renewing the Backyard Brawl with West Virginia on Sept. 1 at Heinz Field. Alexandre and Warren stressed a strong work ethic their teammates must bring to workouts and fall practice if the team wants to defend its ACC title. And that work ethic starts with them. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
