North Carolina running back Javonte Williams announced on his Instagram account that he will not play in the Orange Bowl against Texas A&M in order to began preparation for the NFL draft. The junior from Wallace was the fourth major contributor for the T ar Heels to decide against playing in the Jan. 2 game. UNC coach Mack Brown said last week that Williams was practicing with the team while he was still gathering information about his draft status. Williams decision leaves Carolina's high-scoring offens e without three of its 1,000-yard gainers from this season. Michael Carter and Javonte Williams set an NCAA record by combining for 544 yards rushing, and No. 20 North Carolina embarrassed No. 9 Miami 62-26 on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams. Carter ran for 308 yards and two touchdowns, while Williams had 236 yards and three touchdowns for the Tar Heels (8-3, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). Per the NCAA, it was the seventh time that two teammates each ran for at least 200 yards, the first since 2016 and the first such instance in ACC history . And the numbers only got worse for Miami (8-2, 7-2). Carter and Williams's combined total topped the NCAA's listed FBS record for teammates, set on Nov. 30 when Jaret Patterson (409) and Kevin Marks (97) rushed for 506 for Buffalo against Kent State.North Carolina finished with 778 yards - the most ever yielded by Miami and a Tar Heels record - and 554 yards rushing, also the most allowed in Hurricanes history. Sam Howell threw for a score, ran for a score and caught a TD pass for the Tar Heels . It was the third-most points allowed in Miami history, the most since 66 for Syracuse in 1998. The record is 70 by Texas A&M in 1944. D'Eriq King completed 18 of 30 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns for Miami, which had won five in a row and prob ably lost any hope of playing in the Orange Bowl. It was 34-10 at the half, and North Carolina kept the ball for 7 minutes, 36 seconds on the opening drive of the third quarter - chewing up clock and adding to the margin when Howell stretched the tip of the ball onto the goal line for another Tar Heel touchdown, capping a 13-play drive. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Javonte Williams scored four first-half touchdowns and North Carolina rolled past Duke 56-24 on Saturday afternoon. Sam Howell threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score for the Tar Heels (5-2, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who were play ing without a national ranking for the first time this season. Just like last month, they responded from a three-point loss to whip a neighboring rival, with North Carolina State the previous victim. Williams gained 151 rushing yards on 12 carries as par t of North Carolina's output of 573 yards of total offense. Backfield mate Michael Carter scored two touchdowns, posting 85 yards on the ground on 17 attempts. Howell finished 18-for-27 for 235 yards and an interception. Duke quarterback Chase Brice was 11-for-23 for 155 yards. Teammate Mataeo Durant gained 132 yards on 11 carries, highlighted by a 46-yard touchdown run. Javonte Williams ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 14 North Carolina beat No. 23 North Carolina State 48-21 in Saturday's renewal of the longtime state rivalry. Michael Carter ran for 106 yards and a score of his own for the Tar Heels (4 -1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who used a run-through-and-over-tacklers ground game that helped them take control in the third quarter. "I said it earlier in the year and they reinforce it every week: I think they're probably the best combination of two backs in the country," UNC coach Mack Brown said, adding: "When we get them going, the rest of it works." UNC ran for 326 yards and finished with 578 overall, bouncing back from an upset loss at Florida State to beat the Wolfpack (4-2, 4-2) by a lop sided margin for the second straight season. Williams had three touchdowns in last year's 41-10 win, then had a pair of short TD runs as UNC ran off 21 straight points after leading just 17-7 at halftime. Javonte Williams ran for three fourth-quarter touchdowns and No. 18 North Carolina overcame a mistake-filled performance to beat Syracuse 31-6 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. Michael Carter added 138 yards of total offense for the Tar He els (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won in an empty home stadium after the school opted to open with no fans in attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic.The Tar Heels opened with a touchdown drive only to sputter well into the third qu arter in a performance plagued by turnovers and penalties. But they gradually settled into a rhythm, looking much more like the team expected to be a contender in the ACC race. By the fourth quarter, they were rolling, with Williams scoring from 1 yard o ut on the first play of the period followed by a 6-yard score on the next drive. As the 2019 football season progressed, UNC fans became accustomed to seeing Javonte Williams running around and, mostly, over opponents. Williams appeared in all 13 games, starting one, and finished second on the team with 933 yards rushing. His five ru shing touchdowns led the Tar Heels, and along with Michael Carter (team leading 1,003 rushing yards) provided one of the best backfields in the league.Williams emerging as an ACC caliber running back in his second season was a good sign for UNC an d the future. It's hard to believe after seeing Williams bounce off of helpless defenders like rubber, one after another, that he started the season not knowing where he would fit in. "At the beginning of the year I felt like I was lacking confidence, no t knowing if I was going to play a lot," Williams told the media on a Zoom call Tuesday afternoon. North Carolina is headed back to a bowl game in the first year of Mack Brown's second stint as coach after Javonte Williams scored two touchdowns rushing and another receiving in the third quarter Saturday night to spark a 41-10 win over rival N.C. State . The Tar Heels (6-6, 4-4 ACC) trailed 10-6 at halftime before Williams busted free up the middle for a 26-yard scoring run on UNC's second possession of the second half to give his team the lead for good. On the Tar Heels' next two possessions, Williams caught an 11-yard flare pass for a touchdown and scored on a 6-yard run as UNC stretched its lead.N.C. State (4-8, 1-7) finished the season on a six-game losing streak despite scoring the only touchdown of the first half on a 39-yard pass from De vin Leary to Tabari Hines. The Wolfpack held UNC to 24 rushing yards and two field goals in the first half as Williams managed just seven yards on four carries.
