San Diego State's defensive secondary was perhaps the deepest position group - and certainly most experienced - on the team this season. But the Aztecs could be auditioning for five new starters in the spring. In recent days, three starters - junior corn erback Darren Hall and senior safeties Tariq Thompson and Dwayne Johnson Jr. - declared on social media for the 2021 NFL Draft. Two other senior starters - cornerback Tayler Hawkins and safety Trenton Thompson - also could be gone. The NCAA has extended an extra year of eligibility to players amid the COVID-19 crisis, so Hawkins and Thompson could potentially return. 2020 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB - Darren Hall, Jr., San Diego State,...Hall also made the MW first team after receiving honorable-mention recognition a year ago. On the season, Hall has 37 tackles (30 solo), two tackles for loss, three interceptions for 72 yards, including a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown, and six pass breakups. An Aztec cornerback has now earned first-team all-MW honors in five of the past six seasons (also Damontae Kazee in 2015-16, Kameron Kelly in 2017 and Luq Barcoo in 2019). Hall leads the league in pass breakups (6), passes defended (INT + PBU) (9), passes defended per game (1.13) and interception return touchdowns (1, tied), while ranking second in interceptions and interception yards. - Sa n Diego State Football

2020 PAYCOM JIM THORPE AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Darren Hall, San Diego State, Jr.,...Hall (Pasadena, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga HS), had 49 tackles (34 solo) last year, as well as 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery ret urned for a touchdown, an interception and a team-high-tying 16 pass breakups. His 16 pass breakups tied for the most in the country, and he also ranked in a tie for sixth in pass deflections (INT + PBU) per game (1.42) and tied for 10th in total passes defended (17). Additionally, his 16 PBUs tied Barcoo (2019) and Ron Smith (2017) for the second most in San Diego State single-season history. For his career, Hall has 96 tackles (70 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, three int erceptions, 19 pass breakups and a fumble recovery in 26 games. - San Diego State Football

2019 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Darren Hall, So., DB,...Opposite Barcoo at cornerback, Hall made the all-MW team as an honorable-mention pick for the first time of his career after recording 43 tackles (29 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception, two forced fumbles, a team-high-tying 16 pass breakups and a quarterback hurry. A PFF National Second Team of the Week selection on Oct. 14 and two-time PFF MW Team of the Week winner, Hall ranks in a tie for first in FBS in pass breaku ps (16), a tie for fifth in total passes defended (17) and seventh in passes defended per game (1.55).
