DJ Johnson, Southern Illinois, Player News

Purdue landed a transfer Friday, adding former Iowa defensive back D.J. Johnson to the program. Johnson made the announcement on Twitter. "I promise you're getting the better version of me," he wrote. Purdue plans to seek an immediate eligibility waiver for Johnson, who attended North Central High School in Indianapolis. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Johnson has three years of eligibility remaining.

Given the ongoing troubles surrounding Iowa's program, head coach Kirk Ferentz and strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle concerning its culture and former players speaking out over racial disparities, the chances of Johnson's waiver being granted might be good. In announcing his decision to leave Iowa on May 20, Johnson said on Twitter it had nothing to do with playing time. "Understand PT was far from the issue. I'm a team first guy wouldn't leave my team for those type of circumstances," he wrote. He started the 2019 season at one of Iowa's safety positions but moved to cornerback started the second game against Iowa State. He had two pass breakups and earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week. - Journal and Courier

Iowa cornerback D.J. Johnson, a four-game starter last season, has entered the NCAA's transfer portal. The development was first reported by 247Sports. Johnson was a big recruiting win out of Indianapolis in the Class of 2018, as he chose Iowa over Notre Dame down the stretch. Johnson (5-foot-10, 183 pounds) started the 2019 season as Iowa's cash position in its 4-2-5 defense, but was benched in the opener against Miami of Ohio. He reemerged to make his first career start at cornerback, with Matt Hankins injured, in an 18-17 road win at Iowa State. Eventually, his role was limited to backup and special-teams duty and finished the season with 14 tackles. The Hawkeyes remain well-stocked at cornerback, with Hankins (a fourth-year starter), junior Riley Moss and sophomore Julius Brents (who both have starting experience) leading the way. Dane Belton emerged as a true freshman last season in the cash position and looks like a starter for years to come. - Iowa City Press-Citizen
