Arkansas coach Sam Pittman nodded his head Monday when a reporter mentioned the numbers recorded by receiver Matt Landers in the team's last two games. He again nodded when asked if the Toledo transfer's play is more along the lines of what was anticipated when the Razorbacks signed him out of the NCAA transfer portal. Simply put: Landers is producing, and Pittman is thrilled. Confidence was the difference for Landers during Arkansas' victories at BYU and Auburn. "He needs confidence," Pittman said. "I mean, he needs that. We all do, but he needs that. He's catching the ball extremely well." Following a 123-yard outing in the Razorbacks' win over Missouri State on Sept. 17, Landers' numbers plummeted. He caught three passes for 50 yards over the next three weeks.

Landers was held without a reception in the loss at Mississippi State. That day, his string of 10 consecutive games with at least one catch was snapped. But in Arkansas' last two outings, he has looked better than ever. Pittman said last Monday that Landers would have to be good down the stretch if Arkansas hoped to close the regular season on a note similar to last year, when the team won five of its final six games. A long, speedy and fluid target, Landers may be turning the corner for the Razorbacks. "To be honest with you, I think KJ (Jefferson) is the one who really looks to me like he's looking for him a little bit more," Pittman said, referencing his quarterback. "Now, he has to get open. Certainly he's No. 1 in read progression a lot more than what he was earlier in the year." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Returning senior Warren Thompson and transfer senior Matt Landers have been two of the most talked-about players in training camp for the University of Arkansas, and both of the receivers visited the media room at Reynolds Razorback Stadium after Tuesday's full-pad practice along with nickel back Myles Slusher. Thompson was asked if he heard talk of the receivers being a question mark coming out of spring drills after losing first-round NFL Draft pick Treylon Burks.

Turns out he had. "I think when we heard that, that the wide receivers were the biggest question mark, I think that's when we took it personally," Thompson said. "Everybody in the room, we made it our mission to be great every day and be consistent. I think that's what it was." Thompson is the leading returning receiver with 19 receptions for 304 yards and 2 touchdowns. Landers racked up 20 receptions for 514 yards, an inflated average of 25.7 yards per catch at Toledo last season after transferring there from Georgia after 2020. He said his connection to Coach Sam Pittman, strength and conditioning coach Jamil Walker and other staff who came from Georgia were factors in signing with the Razorbacks out of the transfer portal. "I feel like I've adjusted well," Landers said. "These guys are like my brothers. They took me in with open arms. They just made me feel welcome." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Arkansas cornerbacks Malik Chavis and Hudson Clark said wide receiver Matt Landers, a senior transfer from Toledo who began his college career at Georgia, has been tough to defend. "Speed, speed," Chavis said when asked what's impressive about Landers. "He can run and he can catch. So the deep ball, the 50-50 ball, yeah, I like Matt." Clark said Landers, at 6-5, 197 pounds, does a good job of getting open. "He can create a lot of separation," Clark said. "He's got pretty big strides. He's definitely a new type of receiver we've seen this fall camp. He's been good for us." Landers had 20 receptions for 514 yards, a 25.7-yard average, and 5 touchdowns in 12 games last season. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  05/17/22 - WR Matt LandersrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-4, 200 (DS#25 WR) + More +

Former University of Toledo wide receiver Matt Landers is returning to the Southeastern Conference. Landers, who spent one season at UT after transferring from Georgia, announced Sunday on Twitter that he will play at Arkansas. The 6-foot-5 Landers had a strong second half to the 2021 season, catching 18 passes for 486 yards in the Rockets' final five games. He finished with 20 catches for 514 yards and five touchdowns. Committing to Georgia out of high school, Landers, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., caught 10 passes for 105 yards in 2019, recording three catches for 25 yards in Bulldogs' Sugar Bowl victory over Baylor. He played in four games for Georgia in 2018 and nine games in 2020. - Toledo Blade

Former Toledo receiver Matt Landers has committed to Arkansas after wrapping up an official visit to Fayetteville on Thursday. Landers, 6-5, 201 pounds, chose the Razorbacks over Auburn, Miami and several other programs. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman was on the Georgia staff from 2016-19 and special teams coordinator Scott Fountain served as a special teams analyst for the Bulldogs in 2017 and special teams coordinator in 2019. Knowing Pittman, Fountain and others on staff made him feel comfortable.

He also likes offensive coordinator Kendal Briles' scheme. "Really just a great fit," said Landers, who plans to report to Fayetteville on May 30. "Great organization. Great offensive coordinator, great receivers coach and great staff. Like I said, just familiar faces. Really just the relationships, the energy, the culture coach Pitt is forming at Arkansas." Other familiar faces include director of player development Fernando Velasco, who was in Athens, Ga., from 2017-19, and director of strength and conditioning Jamil Walker, who was also at Georgia for three years prior to coming to Fayetteville. Razorbacks defensive back Latavious Brini transferred to Arkansas from Georgia in January. An ESPN 3-star prospect out Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 2017, Landers chose Georgia over Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Michigan and other schools. He redshirted at Georgia in 2017 and played from 2018-20 and had 12 catches for 132 yards and 1 touchdown before transferring to Toledo last year. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Toledo's offensive production might have taken a hit Tuesday, as wide receiver Matt Landers entered the transfer portal. The 6-foot-5 target caught 18 passes for 486 yards and five touchdowns in UT's final five games last season, developing into the deep threat that many thought he would be after committing to the University of Georgia out of high school. Landers spent three years at Georgia, catching 10 passes for 105 yards in 2019, including three for 25 yards in the Bulldogs' Sugar Bowl victory over Baylor. In 2020, Landers had two receptions for 27 yards. Height, sure hands, and breakaway speed will make Landers a coveted target in the transfer portal. - Toledo Blade
