Marvin Wilson, Florida State, Player News

Former Florida State defensive tackle Marvin Wilson headlines a group of six Seminoles invited to participate in this year's virtual NFL scouting combine. Wilson, along with defensive ends Josh Kaindoh and Janarius Robinson, safety Hamsah Nasirildeen, cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., and receiver Tamorrion Terry, were among 323 college players selected for the event by the NFL. The league announced there would be no in-person workouts at the combine due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Those will take place during the pro days at individual schools.   Florida State's struggles continue to mount as the Seminoles lost several players Wednesday for the rest of the season, with some sidelined by injuries and others saying it is time to move on. Preseason All-American defensive tackle Marvin Wilson and starting offensive lineman Devontay Love-Taylor will not play the rest of the year due to injuries. Coach Mike Norvell also announced that leading wide receiver Tamorrion Terry has left the team and James Blackman, now a backup quarterback, intends to transfer.

Florida State (2-5, 1-5 ACC) is struggling in Norvell's first season, suffering double-digit losses against Miami, North Carolina, Louisville and Pittsburgh. The Seminoles play at NC State (4-3, 4-3 ACC) on Saturday. Wilson was a consensus preseason All-American but did not deliver much in the way of an impactful performance beyond his three blocked kicks on special teams. The senior had 17 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack in six games. "I appreciate Marvin and the leader that he's worked to be," Norvell said. "He's going to still be around each and every day. He's still encouraging guys at practice. I thought his energy on the sideline on Saturday was very impressive." - AP College Football

Marvin Wilson believes he has some unfinished work to do at Florida State and the senior defensive tackle isn't going to let concerns over the coronavirus pandemic prevent him from finishing his football career with the Seminoles. "I didn't come back to sit out or opt-out to prepare for the league [NFL]," Wilson said during a videoconference call Thursday. "I think that's taking the easy way out. For me personally, I came back because I have work to do here in Tallahassee and I'm going to get it done." Ten players have announced they will forgo the upcoming season, including Miami defensive end Gregory Rousseau, Minnesota receiver Rashod Bateman and Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons. Many of them are voicing concerns about the ability to safely play football during the coronavirus pandemic.

For Wilson, it comes down to his passion for playing football. "My mom and my brother and other siblings know how I feel about this sport and know how I feel about this university," said Wilson, who was named to preseason watch lists for the Outland and Nagurski trophies and the Maxwell Award. "They know, once I put my mind to something, I'm going to do it. "...I came too far to just turn back around. I've put so much work into this program, I've put so much emphasis in these young guys' lives and I feel like it would be a form of quitting, in my opinion, just to opt out at this moment." - Orlando Sentinel

Mike Norvell could have lost the locker room at Florida State. And the new FSU football coach hasn't even coached a game at the school. Norvell, who was hired as the Seminoles coach from Memphis at the end of last season, is in hot water with his players after a statement he made to reporter Tashan Reed of The Athletic about the death of George Floyd. "We've had a lot of open communication with our team, our players and our coaches," Norvell said, according to Reed. "I went back and forth individually with every player this weekend. And that was something that was important to me because this is a heartbreaking time in our country…. I told these guys just how grateful I am to be a part of this journey with them because they are the future. We've got an incredible group of men that I get a chance to work with as players and coaches. I'm honored to have the opportunity to help make a difference."

Several Florida State players took issue with Norvell's claims on social media, the most vocal of which was defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, a leader on the team. Wilson tweeted that Norvell's statement "is a lie" and that the players would "not be working out until further notice." "Man this did not happen mane," Wilson's tweet said. "We got a generated text that was sent to everybody. There was no one on one talk between us and coach. This is a lie and me and my teammates as a whole are outraged and we will not be working out until further notice." - Arizona Republic

In FSU's 35-24 victory against Louisville, the Houston native recorded a career-high 10 tackles, including a career-best 3.5 for loss with a career-high-tying 2.0 sacks, and one fumble recovery to become the only player from a Power 5 conference since at least 2000 to hit each of those numbers in the same game. - Florida State Football

Florida State defensive tackle Marvin Wilson will miss the rest of the season due to a hand injury. Interim head coach Odell Haggins Thursday announced that Wilson had surgery earlier this week. Wilson had 44 tackles and five sacks as a junior. Haggins says that Wilson "will remain involved as a captain and respected leader for our team." The Seminoles (4-5, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) are looking to become bowl eligible in the final three games of the season after coach Willie Taggart was dismissed. The Seminoles must win two of those contests to after missing the postseason in 2018. Florida State finishes the season with a home game against FCS Alabama State and a road game vs. No. 10 Florida Florida State plays Boston College (5-4, 3-3) on Saturday. - AP College Football
