Matt Dotson, Michigan State, Player News

Michigan State opened spring practice on Tuesday morning, and it did so without some familiar names on the roster. Tight end Matt Dotson, who coach Mel Tucker said last month would be back for another season, was among those not listed on the spring rost er the Spartans released on Tuesday. Also not listed was offensive lineman Jordan Reid, who opted out of playing in 2020 because of COVID-19, along with wide receiver Laress Nelson and defensive back Tre Person. All four were seniors last season that wou ld have been using the extra year of eligibility offered by the NCAA. Dotson would have been Michigan State's most experienced tight end, while Reid started 27 straight games at right tackle before deciding not to play last fall. Person played in six gam es last season while Nelson missed the entire season with an undisclosed injury. - Detroit News

Michigan State football tight ends coach Ted Gilmore should be able to teach his position group a few new tricks after serving as a wide receivers coach for 24 of his 25 years in the business. Since Josiah Price finished his career in 2016, the tight end s have seen a decrease in receptions, yards and touchdowns. Although Matt Seybert impressed with 284 yards and three touchdowns in 2019, he has exhausted his eligibility. "We're going to put a lot on those guys, not just in the pass game but the run game ," Gilmore said Thursday in a teleconference. "It has to be a selfless group of men. I can't really speak to the room right now, because we haven't been able to do anything on the field."Gilmore is unsure if Matt Dotson has fully recovered from hi s torn Achilles sustained in early November against Illinois but said he's an "important piece to the puzzle." He's looking forward to the progression of Trenton Gillison, who made four receptions for 88 yards in the Pinstripe Bowl. "I hope that left a t aste in his mouth of wanting to pick up where he left off," Gilmore said. "My expectation with him is we don't have time to start all over. I talk to him about how body language reflects confidence. The minute we can start this thing, I expect him to hit the ground running and not take any steps back." - Lansing State Journal

Michigan State hired Wisconsin assistant Ted Gilmore on Friday as tight ends coach. Gilmore, 52, joins the Spartans after spending the past five seasons as the Badgers' wide receivers coach. Previously, he spent three seasons as wide receivers coach for the Oakland Raiders and numerous colleges before that, including Nebraska, Purdue and Colorado. "Coach Gilmore is a great teacher and excellent motivator who brings high energy," new Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker said in a statement. "He's a prove n developer of players and a very effective recruiter." Tucker also announced the hirings of three directors: Geoff Martzen for player personnel, Cody Cox for football operations and Darien Harris for player engagement. - AP College Football

Brian Lewerke's pass came to Matt Dotson, right at the goal line. Michigan State football's tight end took an out-of-step leap attempting to high-point the ball, placed into a small opening between the Arizona State defense. It rattled off his hands and bounced to a Sun Devil defender for an interception. That play told the story of Dotson's 2018 season. The sophomore led the Spartans' tight ends with 14 catches, 159 yards and a touchdown. But it was more about the plays the former 4-star recruit and hi s position group did not make that cost an already struggling offense points and production.Dotson returns as the only MSU tight end with experience, with Matt Sokol and blocker Chase Gianacakos departed via graduation. And the Spartans need Dotso n to begin to reach his potential - and make catches - to help the Spartans move the ball this fall. Dotson, who has the size and strength to be an adequate blocker in the run game, runs crisp routes and showed athletic ability to get downfield off block s into open areas of the field. - Detroit Free Press
