 Chandler Wooten, Auburn, Player News

  08/27/21 - ILB Chandler WootenrSr/2022, Auburn, 6-3, 224 (DS#40 ILB) + More +

Auburn linebacker Chandler Wooten knew he faced an uphill climb this year when he rejoined the Tigers after opting out of the 2020 season, but through the last few months the senior kept his head down and worked. That attitude and commitment not only allowed Wooten to return to form after a year away from the game, but it earned Wooten the respect of his teammates and an honor that Wooten sees as truly special.

Wooten was named one of Auburn's two permanent captains on Wednesday, which serves as a major milestone as Wooten prepares for another season with the Tigers. Wooten, who opted out last season due to the impending birth of his son, shared what the moment was like when head coach Bryan Harsin called to tell him the news. "It was awesome, man, just to hear those words come out of his mouth - to know my teammates voted me and Owen [Pappoe] as permanent captains," Wooten said Thursday. "It was a true honor and a blessing just because - to go from opted out, to come back and earn the respect of my teammates - it was truly a blessing. It's a great honor and something I don't take lightly." - Opelika-Auburn News

Chandler Wooten became a father in the fall, but when winter rolled around, he may have felt more like a grandpa. After opting out of last season due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wooten returned to the field with his teammates back in January to participate in Auburn's offseason workout program. Needless to say, after more than five months away from the team and the game he loves, Wooten needed time to get back into the swing of things. "There was a little rust in the first part of workouts," inside linebackers coach Jeff Schmedding said. "He was joking around that he felt a little bit old at that point - but the rust is off."

As Auburn is underway with the second half of spring practices, Wooten was a player who on Wednesday garnered some unprompted praise from Schmedding, who said the fifth-year senior is having a "heck of a spring" so far. It would be easy to forget about Wooten, or for the veteran to get lost in the mix after sitting out last season, especially given what Auburn brings back at the linebacker position this season. Most of the attention, understandably, is on junior Owen Pappoe, a former five-star prospect who has been a starter since Day 1 on the Plains, and senior Zakoby McClain, who led the nation in tackles a year ago. - Birmingham News

  01/13/21 - ILB Chandler WootenrSr/2022, Auburn, 6-3, 224 (DS#40 ILB) + More +

After opting out of the 2020 season, Auburn linebacker Chandler Wooten will be back in 2021. Wooten announced Tuesday he was returning to the team after sitting out in 2020, which would have been his senior season. Wooten's return is a considerable one for a linebacker corps that lost senior K.J. Britt but returns top tacklers Owen Pappoe and Zakoby McClain from this fall. Wooten announced in August he would not play football during the pandemic-altered 2020 season as he awaited the birth of his son. That decision came after a 2019 season in which Wooten was a crucial reserve linebacker for the Tigers who recorded 27 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss. - Opelika-Auburn News

  08/07/20 - ILB Chandler WootenrSr/2022, Auburn, 6-3, 224 (DS#40 ILB) + More +

Chandler Wooten has become the first Auburn player to opt out of the 2020 season amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Wooten, a senior linebacker who is set to become a first-time father in the next couple of months, announced his decision on Twitter on Thursday afternoon. Wooten will redshirt this season and plans to return in 2021 as a fifth-year senior. Although Wooten was not a starter in the linebacker corps last season, he appeared in all 13 games and finished the year with 27 tackles. He has appeared in 30 games over the last three seasons, totaling 45 tackles, an interception, a fumble return and a pass breakup. - AL.com
