The fact that former University of Utah wide receiver Bryan Thompson announced Thursday afternoon that he is transferring to Arizona State has everything to do with a now-defunct piece of Pac-12 legislation. On May 20, 2019, the Pac-12 announced that its presidents and chancellors voted to eliminate the "loss of a season" penalty for student-athletes who want to transfer from conference school to another. Student-athletes would still be subject to NCAA rules mandating they sit out one year, but that year would no longer count against their eligibility.

Thompson, who will be a redshirt junior in 2021 after the NCAA froze the eligibility clock in 2020, entered the transfer portal on Feb. 2 after 33 career games with the Utes dating back to the 2017 season. Thompson had 33 catches for 756 yards and four touchdowns in those 33 games. The Moreno Valley, Calif., native broke out in 2019 as a redshirt junior, hauling in 18 passes for 461 yards and three scores. - Salt Lake Tribune

The Arizona State football team has a lot of wide receivers, although the group is young as a whole. The Sun Devils will be adding a veteran to the mix in Utah transfer Bryan Thompson, who announced on social media he is headed to Tempe. Thompson, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, could be the vertical threat the Sun Devils are looking for to replace the departed Frank Darby. Thompson, a 6-foot-2, 207-pounder, recorded nine catches for 182 yards and a touchdown in five games for the Utes last season. He had his best game with three receptions for 65 yards in a 24-21 loss to Washington. He caught a 13-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter of that contest. He had racked up 33 catches for 756 yards and four touchdowns in his Utah career. In 2019 he was Utah's second-leading receiver with 18 receptions for 461 receiving yards, for an average of 25.6 yards per catch. He played in 12 games, starting nine of those. - Arizona Republic

The University of Utah lost a veteran wide receiver on Monday afternoon. Bryan Thompson, a redshirt junior who played in all five games in 2020 and 33 for his career, has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, The Salt Lake Tribune has confirmed. 247sports.com was first to report Thompson's exit from Salt Lake City. With the NCAA having frozen eligibility for fall athletes in the face of the COVID-19, Thompson will again be a redshirt junior in 2021. In 33 career games with the Utes dating back to the 2017 season, Thompson had 33 catches for 756 yards and four touchdowns. The Moreno Valley, Calif., native broke out in 2019 as a redshirt junior, hauling in 18 passes for 461 yards and three scores. - Salt Lake Tribune
